i am planning 2 finish up my PC upgrade fast. i am so desperate 4 the E8400 processor due 2 its super tempting price/performance ratio. i wanna enjoy this baby as longer as possible b4 my graduation in 6 months time. the problem here now is that after a week, the stores in my area still doesnt have stock 4 this new baby. i have search from all the computer stores in my area. 2 my utter disappointment, none of them has new stocks 4 the E8400. so do you think the Q6600 is a more worthy substitute of E8400 now? i dont wanna buy online because i do not have a credit card due 2 being a full time college student only. any respond is very much appreciated.

In three weeks time if you buy the Q6600 you'll regret it as the E8400 will be in stock. Just get them to phone you as soon as they get it in stock.

And ffs type properly. That was a pain in the ass to read.

E8400 can be overlocked stably to 4.0GHz using air cooling. The Q6600 is better for normal computing such as multitasking but the E8400 is better for gaming.

I don't know about the Q6600 right now...I'd rather wait for the Q9450 at this point in time, since it'll have 3 MB more cache, SSE4 support, and obviously a 45nm process that'll allow for massive overclocks. (Unfortunately, the only way to get a Yorkfield chip right now is to purchase one of those ludicrously overpriced Core 2 Extreme QX9xxx CPUs.) (So, why do I have a Q6600 now? I was itching to upgrade at the end of last year from an AXP 1800+ Palomino-based system that was just far too slow by today's standards, and figured that the Q6600 would easily provide acceptable performance for three to four years, by which time even Nehalem will be yesterday's news.)

Meh the Q9450 will be overated due to the 8x multiplier. The E8400 is where it's at for gaming, but you really can't go wrong with a q6600 either.

q6600 is a great choice yes the e8400 good but i found it doesnt perform any different compared to quad.

the quad can be OCed very nicely when watercooled and i find performs better than e8400 in quite a few games, the price diff is minimal so it purely what you prefer.

Dont get me wrong i have a Q6600 but your are quite misinformed over there.

Whether these games utilize 4 cores or not the E8400 WILL run gears of war and crysis better than the Q6600.Heck any core 2 duo clocked faster than a Q6600 will beat it in al most all the games. The E8400 is actually quite a good processor as it has more cache per core than the Q6600,it is 10-15% more efficient per clock and is actually cheaper.

I dont think a game will come soon in which the Q6600 will beat the E8400 cuz the E8400 is "quite a bit" better in most games.

And you dont even know what you are saying i think cuz the E8400 wins the Ocing battle pretty easily.

Sorry to bust in on this, but I have the same spec but nothing I have is OC. I have an 8800GT alpha dog, E8400, 2x 800mhz RAM, 160gb seagate, DS3L some crappy 500w PSU and some crappy casecome case with 3 fans.

So my spec is probably a bit worse exept for the CPU. I get 13.2k 3dmarks. And you've got some good OC there.

So I wouldn't quote 3D mark scores, since my similar spec exept with a E8400 almost beats yours. All on stock.

the q6600 isn't bad but when you compare it to the E8400 its easy to see who comes out on top not to mention you can overclock it to the high 3s and low 4s easy with a decent cooler

crysis and gears don't even run better than a E8400 and alan wake doesn't even have a release date im not trying to sound like a D#$# but i really don't see your point. Having a fake quad core 1½-2 years when you really need one for good settings isn't going to be an accomplishment since theres most likely going to be something out there that will demolish it i would rather get the cheaper E8400 for now and upgrade to a quad core when you NEED it as for these so called games coming soon big deal the q6600 and the core 2 duo use the same artichtecture and its for sure not going to full utlize it so once again i don't see your point

You would wait better anyway even if you want to get q6600. There is price drop for intel cpu soon and q6600 will be for 220$ and q6700 will be for 260$

Get the E8400, luckily I got mine for $189.99 at Microcenter before people found out about the deal. Installed it all today and it runs like a dream. When comparing stock speeds the E8400 generally beats the Q6600 by a fair margin of FPS. When overclocked, the gap widens since the new Wolfdale chips do more processes per clock speed. Definately wait for the E8400, better performance and much cheaper.

Gaming, I guess the e8400 is more....refined, of course I do a lot of file converting, ripping, etc..... and a quad core would be nice for doing all of those things quick.
