I want to upgrade this system:

Intel Pentium D 820 2.8GHz

4GB DDR2 667

ATI Radeon HD 2600pro 256MB

400W iMicro PSU

With this GPU and PSU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199

Would that GPU even be worth the money?

Your CPU will be a serious bottleneck for any games in the past few years. It might not be worth it with that CPU.

A lot depends on what you want to do with your PC and what your budget is.

The "Pentium D" processors are about the worst series Intel have ever made (to my restricted knowledge).

The 4870 will be an improvement -although the model you want to buy is a 512MB one.

Another problem -should you choose to upgrade the CPU- that those socket 775 mainboards rarely support Core Duo processors, although some boards are upgradable through a flash.

Like I said, a lot depends on what you would like to do and on what you can/are willing to spend...

you need a new cpu if you'd like to play the latest games. which means a new mobo, which means new ram too. and then you need a new psu and then finnaly your graphics card.

you could get the graphics card and psu and upgrade everything else when you can. it would work till then. but you'd want to get a better psu else youll only need to buy another one for anything better than a 4870. if you buy a decent 650-700w psu and a 4870 then atleast you can keep the psu for when you can afford to upgrade everything else.

Yeah, unfortunately when a pc is outdated you have to upgrade most of everything to upgrade a single component :(

I guess you'll have to start somewhere though, I recommend starting at CPU&Motherboard&RAM.

Not with that $14 iMicro PSU... I'd start right there to avoid talking to a burning bush in the near future...

Nope. Socket 775 is obsolete as it is and mainboards for Pentium D are seldom upgradable to E or Q processors, so he's stuck with the Pentium D 820 -which was the lowest end CPU in that series, if my memory serves me well. I had a D-940, by the way, which was not much of an improvement over a P-IV@3.4GHz. Only when I bought an E8400 did I see a major leap forward in speed. On top of that, a 4870 is a good card (when getting the 1GB version, that is) but can't be called an upgrade -speaking in general terms- when we're at the 7xxx series nowadays. A real ilmprovement would be to go for a spic & span PSU and at least a 6870 -but that D-820 would seriously get in the way of enjoying a spot of gaming...

If I were you I would just start saving for a complete modern build rather than upgrading with hardware that's several years old because by the time you start upgrading your other parts, that video card will be close to obsolete. If I were on a strict budget, I'd just save a bit at a time between systems so that when I do need to upgrade, I can afford to replace everything at once.
