Okay, so first of all, I am a diehard TF2 player. But recently all of my friends have been playing WoW a lot, so I don't have many friends to play with. The sole reasons I don't want to play WoW are:

2. I don't want it to take over my life

but the reasons i want to are:

1. a lot of people i know play it

2. it's a fun open world game with a lot to do

okay, so fetch quests, are there a lot? does the game justify the mothly fee? is it easy to not play for a week?

The game justifies the monthly mainly because blizzard does a good job mataining the servers and regulary bringing out great new content.

However, just because a lot of your friends are playing it doesn't mean you will. Try the 10 day trial to get a feel for the game but keep in mind you are only seeing ~5% of the game in the trial There are tons of fetch quest.....it is an MMO after all, they all have em. Have some self control and you'll social life will be ok.

if your friends are playing it i think it will be worth the monthly fee. whether it will take over your life or not, is entirely up to you, believe it or not.

playing WoW with friends is just like going out with them to a mall or something, only better :P

Dopemonk736

the negatives you addressed:

1. yes, monthly fees suck, but at the same time WoW offers a near-infinite amount of gametime, so 15 bucks a month isnt that bad. I also found is stops me from buying mediocre games; when I play WoW, I save money since I can wait for a truly excellent game to come along.

2. Well, this is solely your problem. Do you have an addictive personality? Have you ever bought a game and played it for months on end, for hours a day? YOu said you play TF2; do you play this for more than 2 hours a day, or less? If less, then you should do ok with WoW. More importantly, do your friends spend a lot of time (during the week) playing WoW?

3. Not sure what you mean...there are a lot of "kill x type of mob to collect y amount of something" but WoW has a lot of good diversity and questing is, imo, its greatest strength.

the pros you addressed:

1. WoW is literally twice as fun with real life friends. Load up teamspeak or ventrilo on a saturday morning and spend a few hour doing in instance with your buddies.

2. Yes, its an MMO so there is tons to do and lots to explore.

Yes, lots of quests. Yes, its the only MMO ive played where I am happy to pay the monthly fee...blizzard earns it imo with their support. Yes, its easy to not play for a week. I actually take 2-month long break during the summer so I can go camping and to the beach with friends and dont miss it one bit.

I was in your position when i started playing 3 months ago, I thought it would totally control me, but it really doesn't, it really depends on the person. I can get bored of wow so fast some days, but others days I've played for like 14 hours straight. But most of the time it's like a mix, like the average day I play wow for like 1,2 hours then I go to cod4, bioshock, stalker, splinter cell lol
It's all about moderation, balancing wow with other things and other games. The way you get totally sucked into Wow is if it's the only game you play. try to balance wow with 2,3 other games and you shouldn't totally get controled by it.

Re: Darth_Kane

1. WoW is entertainment enough for most people. So $15 a month is actually a huge money saver for the majority of the WoW playerbase. Instead of buying a new $50 per new game every month, they pay $15 for additional content to keep them occupied with one.

2. Agreed. WoW will only take over your life if you let it.

3. WoW has some EXTREMELY dynamic quests, actually. A few examples:

Ogri'la Bombing run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz83BH23xNQ

The Ring of Blood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EDeSLwAELs

3. If you have alot of friends that play, it will make your experience even better

Yeah, its definitely work it, its a fantastic game to play with friends. In terms of the monthly fee, most of my friends who play WoW rarely buy other games, so it seems to save them money.

I liked WoW a lot. Ya most of the quests are pretty much shallow, but if you get bored of questing you can just go do an instance. The monthly fee isn't even that bad when you consider what they have to do, server maintanence and always having them running. If you have friends to play WoW with then it makes it even better so its worth the money

You should get WoW if you can afford it and you should control your time limit on the game. I know some people that play WoW right after they get home from school until they go to sleep. Don't play it if you don't have good self-control.

Download the 10 day WoW trail and see if you like it.

Try some other MMORPGs that are out there too.

I will be one of those 50 people (though I know none of you) to say that wow sucks. It is a fun game but there are so many downsides to it that it is not worth the play. $15 bucks a month to get pushed around and "nerfed"/"pwned" by blizzard is not worth it. I played a lot at one time and played the PVP all the time. I worked so hard to reach near top and then they go and switch the whole infrastructure of PVP ranking, even though no one wanted this to happen, and I stopped playing. In complete reality it is a waste. Games are to be fun and WOW is fun 50% of the time but the other time it is spent worring about whether a choice you make will be negated by blizzard changing everything around on you. You level to get some ability that you have been waiting for and blizzard goes and nerfs the ability to "even" things out, then you are pissed and they won't let you respec. You pretty much get screwed but you keep paying because you are addicted. There is also too much drama in the guilds. Some guilds are good and others are filled with "35" year olds that are either really 14 in real life or act like they are 14. Like someone said above, get Oblivion or Witcher or something better.

nah, i never really cared about the abilities, I adapt pretty well, but many people give a @$%# about their abilities and whine all day because blizzard bumped the speed of some warrior ability by 1/2 a milisecond and nerfed their thief ability by the same, and then they hit the forums whining about how the warriors kick their ass all over the field (even though it was only one game). In PVP, your team is what counts, and your abilities are only a small fraction of the possibilities. A well organized team will kick ass no matter how badly speced they are.

Dopemonk736

1. the monthly fee gets old.

2. it WILL take over your life.

3. fetch quests suck in any rpg.

--------------------------

1. they will quit playing it

2. once you hit max level its just grinding for more gear so you can grind somewhere else for even more gear.

I would suggest against it. I used to play and so did about 20 different people I know from various places. Now I only know 1 person who plays and nobody likes him anymore b/c he's addicted to it.

Honestly, even if it's tempting, it's not worth playing. That game literally ruins peoples lives, and everyone who spends hours upon hours playing it has some sort of justification for why it is "OK". I spent a few months in that game, and years before that in MMOs, and they really can take over your life. Play casual games and enjoy life. WoW should be illegal, just like drugs.

If you enjoy generic MMORPG's then, by all means, get WoW and enjoy the endless, pointless, grind. On the other hand, if you want to play something that's actually good, try one of the other MMORPG's out there.

WoW is just a waste of money. The whole game is: Questing. All you do is quest and go to dungeons, get pointless gear and what? Nothing, you don't get anything out of this game except hours and hours of boredom, pointlessness, less money in your wallet. But the decision is yours.

I love hearing from people who obviously have ZERO business sense hark on the monthly fee. MMO's couldn't operate without a monthly fee. BTW, I am crazy and fairly wealthy so I guess I do fall into that catagory, as I subscribe to 4 MMO's at once (WoW, LoTRO, EVE and UO). I also have a GameTap Gold membership and a pogo membership to boot. What else can i spend my vast wealth on????

Don't even do it bro.... First of all, your friends are ALREADY playing it so you're gonna be stuck trying to level up to lvl 70 by urself. Getting to level 70 takes days and days of PLAY TIME. It's not worth it dude... You will turn into a nerd and just spend you're days wasting your time. If you must play an MMO then just wait for Age of Conan. That game is gonna be sick as hell!

So many haters :P

Me and my wife play together and have a blast. If we weren't playing WOW, we would go spend money to end the boredom. So we save money with the monthly fees. Also we spend time together, which makes us both happy. Hey its better than going to the mall ;) WOW is fun, its addicting yes. but grow up. learn to control it. I also play on a server with other friends, which is nice too.

Ah regrets, regrets.

Imo, WoW is a pathetic example of what a MMORPG should look like. The game itself is bland and boring, the combat is dull and repetetive, diversity is lacking, and the character voices tend to get very annoying. Honestly, try the 10 day free trial, if you enjoy it, play WoW, if not, stick with TF2.

PS. Just tell your friends about a little MMO called Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, I'm sure that'll open their eyes. (or Mortal Online--2009 release though)

As an ex-player I would definitely say its worth it (I enjoyed it right up to lev 60 on the original game) and as long as you keep your play time in moderation I would say that you shouldn't have a problem getting addicted.

You'll find that if you have alot of friends playing and you manage to form your own guild (recommended even if its hard at first) the experience will be better, if only due to the fact you are grouping with people you know and hopefully trust. It is possible to play as a solo player coming in without friends, but will be harder unless your extremely good at socialising using text (I played both ways, first in a guild with friends for 15 months then as a guild person in another guild).

I played WoW for over 3 years. I belonged to a really good guild, made some good friends there, and had a lot of fun playing. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Like so many I became addicted and just didn't know when to stop. It's a huge time sink. The monthly fee is nothing to most gamers who would spend far more than that anyway on new games or other forms of entertainment. If you pay in advance you can get it down to $13 and that's nothing for the amount of time most WoW players put in. The servers are incredibly stable now and there are constant free updates that add new content.

It also doesn't take that long to level a character to 70. Having already leveled 2 characters my last one took only 10 days /played. That's game time not real time but still... It isn't that hard any more. Blizzard upped the experience gained at lower levels and made leveling much easier by removing some of the harder challenges we used to face. It doesn't take nearly as long as it used to. But it also removed a lot of the fun of leveling by dumbing it down just so they could make people happier who wanted to level new characters when they got bored with one or wanted to change factions because theirs sucked in PVP.

The main problem I have with WoW is that it has turned into a huge money maker for Blizzard and nothing more. In the beginning the game was fun and all about social interaction and there were some really fun challenges and some good storyline. Now it's all a big grind. Everything at 70 is about grind this and grind that. It gets really old really fast. All the new content seems to be either repeatable daily quests or instances. Instances are there for getting new gear so you can move on to the next level of instances. It's a pretty endless grind for gear and about the time you think you have it all Blizzard makes it null and void by adding a bunch of new content which is just more leveling or instance grinding for more gear that will be obselete as soon as you get it.

As for playing with friends it's ok but you really have to devote a good bit of time to it as they will constantly be depending on you to help get through this or that instance. Instances can take a very long time. I've been in one for anywhere from 2 to 8 hours before. Often you spend that time and come away with nothing to show for it. It's insanely frustrating.

Even the PVP is a grind since you need PVP specific gear to be good at it and that involves lots of time spent grinding battlegrounds or the arena to get better gear. Early on gear aquired in instances was just fine for PVP but not any more. Blizzard found a way to make people grind even longer so the $$$ would keep flowing. They are very smart about keeping you playing so they can keep collecting. And if you happen to not be that good at PVP it can take forever. It also takes forever if your side sucks which is often out of your control. I played an alliance character on the Hyjal server where the Horde beat Alliance in the bgs 99% of the time. It took forever to get gear.

There are some fun things about WoW. The game world is huge and there's lots to see and do. There's enough fun to get you hooked and then enough things to grind out to keep you going virtually forever. I can totally understand why people get hooked on it. I did. But I'm out and I don't plan on ever going back. If you are smart listen to me and don't ever set foot in that game world. I look at it much differently now than when I was involved in it. It's a very clever deception designed for one purpose, to make Blizzard richer. It's your choice.

World of Warcraft is an amazing game, but keep this in mind: you will NOT progress in WoW (at least after you hit the level cap) unless you devote a significant amount of time to it. This will also mean that you will either:

1) Ignore some real life commitments in order to keep up with your in-game commitments. This is the first sign that you have become addicted to the game, and you will realize at some point (usually this realization comes far too late) that you have ignored some of your real life priorities in order to dress your pixilated cow with a pickle suit.

OR

2) You will be more sensible than that and prioritize your real life commitments. This will end up with you being frustrated with the lack of progression in the game, and ultimately quitting.

Save yourself the hassle. Do not play WoW. It is an exercise in frustration which ever way you look at it. Also, the time commitment will mean you will miss out on other high quality games :)

Just a few things to remember about WOW, I have 3 70's btw.

  • Gear > Skill
  • You either play a lot and get somewhere or play on and off and watch your character progress pretty much nowhere.
  • There are a lot of idiots playing, I mean a LOT.

If you value your autonomy as a sensible human being living a mostly normal life, no. Stay the #%$%@ away from it. WoW is pretty and mechanically sound, but it's rinse and repeat until you get to raid. Then it's raid and repeat.

Even though I had a lot of fun playing it and played it for a long time (4 70s), I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have a lot of free time. Raiding in a good guild is the most fun thing to do, and you have to stay in front of your computer several days a week in order to do so. People are pretty high leveled so you may have some problems finding low level groups except on a new server.

Get the trial first. I highly recommend healing classes.

Okay, so first of all, I am a diehard TF2 player. But recently all of my friends have been playing WoW a lot, so I don't have many friends to play with. The sole reasons I don't want to play WoW are:

1. the monthly fee

2. I don't want it to take over my life

3. fetch quests

but the reasons i want to are:

1. a lot of people i know play it

2. it's a fun open world game with a lot to do

okay, so fetch quests, are there a lot? does the game justify the mothly fee? is it easy to not play for a week?

Dopemonk736

1) I haven't found the monthly to be much of problem honestly. There's so much to do in game that it more than makes up for the $15/month I spend on it. I've found I end up spending a lot less on games overall since WoW provides me with plenty to keep me entertained. There's also new content being added periodically which also makes it worth it. They just added a new island with a lot of daily quests, a new d5-man instance, and a new raid instance.

2) This is more about you than the game. If you ever feel like you're spending too much time in the game and neglecting other people, responsibilities, just take a break from it. It's pretty easy.

There are a lot of fetch type quests, but there are a lot of others, too. When you hit 70, a lot of the daily quests can be really fun. The bombing runs in particular. You get a little taste of what those will be like when you first step into the Outlands. Quests get repetitive somewhat, but a lot of them contain a neat storyline, as well. Several of them also give you some nice gear.

Yes, it's easy to take a break from it for a week. In some respects, you might fall a little behind if you leave the game for awhile and come back, but the game has become casual friendly enough that you can catch up to your friends gear wise pretty easily now. Espeically with the new heroic badge items just added. I've take several breaks that lasted a few months here and there. I've been able to get back into it without too many problems.

If your friends play it then I think it will probably take over your life. Especially if you are quite a big gamer atm.

There are tons of fetch quests. Every quest falls into one of two catagories ; Fetch quest or Kill quest. There is nothing else.

Well, you just said all your friends play it, and it's hard not to like the game in the first place, so yeah, play the game. I've been having fun with 4 of my friends on WoW for over half a year now, and it is extremely fun.

[QUOTE="Dopemonk736"]

1. the monthly fee

Darth_Kane

No game is worth 15$ per month, and IMO only crazy people and people with a lot of money would pay that

2. I don't want it to take over my life

Dopemonk736

It will only take over your life if you're a nerd

3. fetch quests

Dopemonk736

All the quest are either kill this or fetch this. What do you expect from a MMO? Witcher s.tyle quests?

1. a lot of people i know play it

Dopemonk736

So if those people thrown themself off a bridge , you'd do it too ?

2. it's a fun open world game with a lot to do

Dopemonk736

So is Oblivion's and Morrowind's

How ironic that nearly all of Witcher's quests involve killing X amount of this or collecting X amount of that.

On topic though, I really don't think you should get WoW... wait for Age of Conan instead :P 15 dollars a month should not be an issue if you have a part time job.

I recommend WoW to everyone I hate.SKaREO

Now ^that^ was funny.

Basically it's your personal experience that will let you like a game or not. If friends are there, and you like playing with them, then go for it. If you don't like them, or playing with others, then this game is not for you.

Well, you can buy it to be with your friend and yes, it's a fun world to play in and stuff.

It will only take over your life if you want it, if you say to yourself that you will play like 2 hours a day or something, and you stick to that, then there will be no problem.

At some points the game is worth it's monthly fee, and sometimes not, just download the 10 day free trial, your friends can also give you free 10 days I think.

I also play on a server with other friends, which is nice too.

splo0ge

You are f%$king kidding I hope? I am sure you and your wife can find better things to do with your time to end the boredom.....

The game is a timesink and your return on investment is a joke. PVE is all about scripted boss fights that become boring as hell in a very short time. PVP is about buying arena points or doing endless Battlegrounds to get marks to gear up in purplez.

A few options for you might be to go outside and get some fresh air, get laid, get hammered etc etc.
