I don't normally like the whole Always Online thing, but for this case I think it's warranted.

It acts more like a Sim City MMO which will be great to play with friends.

Until I get a better internet connection than the one I have (speeds are good but disconnects frequently) I'll stick to SimCity 4.

It's not the router, I already replaced it. I'm starting to think it's the modem.

I'll wait and see how it plays out. If EA whores SC5 like Sim 3 with regards to xpaks and DLC then I'll pass.

That's a given mate. Doesn't mean you have to buy the DLC. Saying that, everyone complains about DLC that costs $5-$10, but yet are willing to buy an Expansion Pack at full price for the total amount of the same items??? I would rather have the choice to buy what I want rather than spend more and get everything with stuff I don't need.

I'll admit I defended Blizzard for their always online DRM with Diablo 3. However, now seeing that it has yet to prevent what they said it was. Just like any DRM, it only hurts the legitmate customer. I won't be able to support always online DRM in the future as it won't prevent what the developers intend.

Then they are ***** from the beginning, for designing it multiplayer from ground up or fail at modular programming. We aren't running weather/sea current/whatever-scientific simulation here. A single PC is enough to do number crunching for SP mode.

You need to read the article again. The SP aspects of it is managed by the local PC, the servers manage the whole simulation of economies, cities, sims etc. People here have to realize that Maxis HAD to do this. I'm talking about the MP aspect. If anyone has played Cityville and knows how big it's gotten, it would be crazy for Maxis to release a Sim City without MP integrated. I understand they could have put a strictly SP campaign but the market is perfect for this plan.

I could swallow all my hate of online-only for this title, but the thing is, even before I knew of the online only component, the game already seemed like a feature-cut Sim City 4 with a facelift judging from everything I saw and read. I'll be waiting for a lot of reviews before I throw any money at this.

I disagree. They have taken the good from 4. streamlined the terrible and increased the AI routines as well as the complexity.

Exactly. People confuse streamlining the tedious parts of Sim4 as "feature-cuts"....

Couldn't they have an offline and online mode like 90% of the games out there? Those who choose offline wouldn't be able to trade with other cities, and wouldn't get simulated affect economies, weather, pollution, transfer crime etc... from EA's servers.

Yes they could have done that, but according to the devs part of the simulation of the engine is hosted on EA's Servers.

Diablo 3's entire system of quests and loot and random dungeons is run off of blizzard's servers, also unnecessary. It's the new DRM

Blizzard did it mostly for the Hacking that occured in Diablo2, and also for the Real Money Auction House. What ruined D3 wasn't the Always Online aspect, it was the AH. It made questing pointless.

Of course those things need to be improved on as well. (the disconnections were the first few days or week due to the influx)

I personally don't think Diablo3 needed the Always Online Connection, but Blizzard wanted it to work more like an MMO so that's why they went that way, so you could use ur character anywhere in the World etc etc.

Sim City on the other hand I think will benefit from the online factor. Obviously we have to wait and see how it actually works out.

I will use the wait and see approach. If it causes connectivity issues like Diablo 3's horrendous data-fetching (stuttering), and any sorts of surprises, I wouldn't even consider purchasing it (as much as I loved the original Sim City.

I've been following this game with the info that keeps popping up in the forums here and it absolutely amazes me that this online feature is surprising so many people. Unless I missed something massive, reading earlier articles about how they wanted to develop the game gave no hint that there would be a single player portion for the game.

The thread in SW and this one to a lesser extent actually make me facepalm lol.

Very true, but wasn't Sim City always affected by Global Economy? Just that this version is even more realistic cause the economy is controlled by real life players, not AI.

Loved the SimCity franchise, to this day I still remember buying a 4mb RAM pack so I could play Simcity 2000 on my Amiga A1200. However times change and EA really like to trash the hell out of franchises. The fact this game has no single player (the DRM disguised as a "feature" excludes this from being a single player game) means I will be skipping this. It seems like I won't be a lone either, Maxis did an AMA on Reddit and not a lot was discussed in that AMA other than "take your disguised DRM and shove it where the sun doesn't shine". This smells like Command and Conquer all over again.

Omg...how many stupid people on this forums...

90% of you have no clue about what a drm is...

NOT TO TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS

HAVE NO CLUE WHY THIS DRM IS BAD/EVIL...

No one cares if you dont have a solid internet connection

And no one should care...if you have a problem, take it

with your internet provider...not with the game devs.

So many retards so freaking many...

Not defending Always Online DRM, cause I would rather it not exist. (I even hate Steam sometimes and wish it was the old days). BUT....people need to realize that the Internet is now a necessity, not a want. Internet these days is like having electricity unfortunately, everything is done through it.

And online only has yet to fix the botting and hacking. Blizzard is having to keep doing ban wave after ban wave, but the damage is done. The economy is already screwed.

A DRM that will be broken by those its meant to stop while leaving the legimate customers to suffer? Just look at Diablo 3.

It doesn't look like it'd going to be as in-depth as Sim City 4 was, which is what makes Sim City games fun. I highly doubt this will be better than Sim City 4. I just wish Sim City 4 had proper widescreen and hardware support. There is a work around to get it to run in a widescreen resolution though.

Don't confuse streamlining the tedious parts of Sim4 for "not in depth". This new Sim City seems to have lots of depth, they have just automated some things which people hated doing anyways.

It doesn't look like it'd going to be as in-depth as Sim City 4 was, which is what makes Sim City games fun. I highly doubt this will be better than Sim City 4.

Don't confuse streamlining the tedious parts of Sim4 for "not in depth". This new Sim City seems to have lots of depth, they have just automated some things which people hated doing anyways.

What were the tedious parts? They're streamlining the game by taking out stuff that gave the game depth.

water pipes. Electricty lines. yet adding things like buildings that are modular to change the functions and several different refining tiers to make different exports/consumables doesnt add depth, ok.....

Always online doesn't bother me since there's an internet connection everywhere I play games. There's internet everywhere these days. The only problem I find with always online is the possibility of being unable to play the game when your internet is down or when their network is down. Diablo 3 is a good example. I personally didn't have as many issues as others seemed to with it but I'm well aware it can be a problem.

So basically, according to an article, we cant have a cities or region single player? I remember a video which was released by maxis clearly stating that you could have your region "private" so that you could play on your own. Very confusing
