I hate MMORPGs that split player base into several different servers. It takes away from the massive, persistent feel. Are there any MMOs out there that have one server like EVE Online? Or at least something like Runescape / GuildWars that lets you switch to different server/zone. I feel restricted by having to play on a single server the whole time.

It's practically impossible to have a large user base and a single server. With EVE Online, CCP have an awesome server structure, but if they had the user base of WoW, it would be impossible to manage all the connections.

Blizzard are currently doing work on their server infrastructure to combine Battlegroups into single regions. So if you play on a server in EU, you'll be able to join a Battleground and play against/with any other players from any other servers. Must be a lot of work. They said even the cross-realm Battlegrounds and dungeons required them to do loads of work on their systems.

Check on Perpetuum, everyone plays on the same server. Its similar to Eve Online except instead of spaceships you control robots.

The game is in open beta atm and the client is around a 600mb download.

This seems like an awfully trivial thing to worry about when looking for an MMORPG. If the game is popular, a single server will seem like an entire world, like it's supposed to.
