if you're new to CS games, then expect a really different experience from most of today's FPS games. it takes a while to get used to it, but trust me. once you get better, it becomes much, much more satisfying.
I never got into CS:S either. Not only did the controls feel... awkward?... but I was terrible at it. I quit playing it after maybe a week and went to CoD4 (at which I was MUCH better).
I like CSS because of the realism. It doesn't take much to kill someone with a gun, just accuracy. And you're down for the count, so it's not mindless respawning. That's made for some of the most intense FPS matches ever.
Not really, it just isn't very fun to me in general. Has a very non-competetive feel to it.

wtf counter strike is one of the most competitive games ever! but then again your playing in pubs you got to join a clan and do scrims to experiece the super comptetive nature of counter strike
LOL! Counter-strike sucks when you first play it because let's face it, its hard!. It took me literally years to get good at counter-strike. There's so many expert counter-strike gamers out there just waiting to pwn you around every corner.
Once you get good you'll enjoy it so much more. But honestly, nowadays MW2 multiplayerblows counter-strike out of the water.
It's definantly alot different from other games, not the normal "Respawn, shoot, die, respawn, repeat" formula that other games follow *cough*Call of Duty*/cough*. Download some nice mods and addons to improve the experience.
personally, i may play MW2, but this game is still the king of online shooters. everytime i play a game, no matter win or lose, it always left a smile on my face.... but then again, i play it for the gungames ;P
Like others have said it's a very hard game that can take years to become consistantly good, there's a weird amount of depth to CS that's kind of hard to see at first glance.
Anyways the CoD series is easy, if you don't like the challenge get cod4/5/6.
CSS I remember I always was pretty good at it, mainly because I sprayed bullets and it got magical headshots. It led me into CAL-M rofl. I like Quake 3 more :)
