have seen this game mentioned a few times by this one guy.

Also I have been playing games since the 80s so I am used to old games and the graphics that look very out of date by today’s standards. So far I have just played the tutorial and part of the first level. I have to ask, what is so great about this game? Why do so many people think it’s so great?

If someone asked me why I think Deus Ex is the best game of all time I can answer that easily. It’s the cyberpunk period, the cyberpunk music, the wonderful cyberpunk designed maps and free will, the very well done and compelling cyberpunk story, and the excellent rpg game play.

So can you guys please tell me why you think Mafia is so great? I know it’s too early for me to have an opinion about this game but I would like to hear why this one guy considers it’s so great.

Why don't you just ask the guy why he thought it was sooo great.

Mafia has one of the best storylines I have seen, and had the joy of playing through. Each character is memorable and just plain awesome. The graphics even to todays standards are pretty good (still quite low-res though). The cutscenes are some of the very best, without a doubt. If you can't see any of that then you just shouldn't play it, it's not for you.

IMHO it's not that great. It's worth playing, there's some fun to be had, but it's not a "great" game. It's a mediocre Grand Theft Auto clone. Half driving missions, half shooting missions. It's not nearly as wide open as the GTA games and it doesn't have the mini games. The cars (in the interest of some kind of historical accuracy) are not as fun to drive as GTA cars. Later in the game the cars get much more powerful and handle much better, but they're never close to GTA cars (again intentionally, historical accuracy-ish-ness).

Good things about the game: it's a good period piece and it's got a better than average story. And if your into historical accuracy (or what passes for that in a video game) more than horsepower, control, and firepower: you get that to.

If you've played the GTA's and want more driving/action I'd go for Simpsons Hit & Run first, Mafia second.
