I'm running Vista 64-bit SP1, moved up from XP 32-bit SP3, I like it better, it has more features, it is more secure, and even when UAC is enabled it isn't even that much of a hassle. I wouldn't say it's more stable, and XP SP3 is rock solid, but Vista's stability is good, I haven't had any problems with it other than my ATI driver crashing now and then.
Vista had its share of bugs when it came out, it got bad press. Apple then capitalized on the bad press by releasing the "I'm a PC, and I'm a Mac" advertising campaign which only furthered the idea that Vista is bad. Now that Vista is in a very usable state and actually a worthy successor to XP, people are just under the influence that it's no good.
So I think Microsoft is doing the right thing with their advertising campaign.
