Just curious what everyone thinks...

Personally, I have no idea what people see in this game. The graphics are good, but what else? seems to me like it's hyped just because, exactly like Tribes, now I don't even know if it's still around that's how "much" people talk about that, after it was cool to hype it, there hasn't been a more awkward and pointless game (imo), not even BF 3 is at this level.
I don't know what's lacking, but after 15 minutes I already lost all the time I had to lose on this game.
Simply put, it's amazing if you give it a chance.
The main downside is a lack of tutorial or in-game documentation on how to play which is turning a few people off because they don't know what to do or where to go.

I think it's fun but I often have no idea what i'm doing, I wish there was a more clear directive as to where you should be going. I also hate the sometimes large faction imbalance, on the server I was playing TR and we only owned a very small square of the map the NC owned even less then we did and the VS just dominated the whole map. When we finally capped a base the VS come rushing back in with an Armada of air and ground support and it was nothing short of frustrating.

you need to play for more than 15 minutes to get a feel for the game. Once you figure out what is going on it becomes much more engaging; you stop looking at your K/D ratio and start looking at the map; where your faction is on the offensive, where they are getting pummled, where you and your squad will be the most useful.
Once you learn the ropes there is a great sense of being part of something greater than yourself or your squad.
Its not without its issues, but it provides a pretty unique and very cool experience within shooter circles. I found it kinda boring at first, but the more i play, the more I appreciate the quality of the design and the scope of the conflict.

It's not because I didn't understand what's happening and I never look at my KDR in anything except WoT and Chivalry, I don't get a competitive nature for every random game, most FPSs I play just for fun, but this one, it just didn't give me any reasons to play it, it gave me a BF 3 feeling with awkward gameplay, while I played I mostly gave up on its shooting and just drove a tank, then I watched a friend participating in a takeover of some random location, he has something like 6 hours on it and the same opinion, it didn't change at all from his first impression, then there's another friend that's crazy about it yet he played for only 2 hours and never touched it again. It was pretty intense to have hundred of guys by my side shooting up and taking a base of the enemy. But after that I just couldn't get into it. If I could use my controller to pilot ships and vehicles I probably would like it more. But eh, lots of traveling till you get to that intense moment of lasers flying back and forth.Deadpool-nShouldn't be any traveling really. You can deploy via the map and this will airdrop you into the thick of it. If you want to bring a vehicle into the fray, simply Redeploy via the map (bottom right) and select a spawn location that has a vehicle spawner (little tank icon).
The game has it's moments, but SOE's F2P model and poor optimization will likely be the death of this game. I've literally seen people I'm shooting at disappear because they ran out of my arbitrary render distance; the refresh rate on enemies at a distance is horrid too and makes long range engagements frustrating. The F2P system neuters vehicles so that the P2P base has a absurd advantage over the F2P base until they accumulate enough certs to get basic weapons (probably 1-2 months of play for most people).
It's also pretty solid evidence that more players doesn't always mean more fun. I've very rarely experienced a hard fought, satisfying battle. One side always has an astounding advantage and it slowly begins to feel hopeless. At some points, I've seen 2 factions fighting side by side to take a facility from a weaker faction. They need some sort of mechanic that gives each faction advanced notification that a large force is amassing and heading towards a key facility. Maybe some sort of radar facilities that could be destroyed by a smaller force before sending in the main force. Plus, the map control / resource system seems flawed and there's very little incentive to hold on to key points. I rarely find myself lacking enough resources to purchase vehicles by end of the timer (you can only purchase a vehicle every so often). What's the point of having a resource system AND a restrictive timer? I should be able to buy vehicles until my hearts content until the resources run dry.
I could probably go on for awhile... I have faith that the devs could make this a great game with another year of development, but I lack the same faith in SOE to keep this game afloat.
I tried pretty hard to get into it. I watched about a half hour of tutorials and played it for about 3 hours. I get the concept but I dont really understand what I need resources for. Vehicles? Thats the whole point of taking a territory? To get more vehicles to take another? Theres just not much incentive there for me.
Edit: Also disappointed by the amount of classes. For how the game works you might argue that 4 is all you need, but after grinding in Tribes for a good amount of time I feel like I have to grind again for the same few classes. i.e they feel the same as tribes.
I enjoy the game quite a bit, but I think Sony needs to come up with a better way to reward defense. Zerging and a focus on base capture seems to be what the community likes to do most. I personally like defense because I can rack up a lot of kills and experience in a short time.
This I agree with. There are some exp bonuses to defending but for the most part feels like there just isn't very much incentive to defend bases.I enjoy the game quite a bit, but I think Sony needs to come up with a better way to reward defense. it's like wait 5 minutes before each engagementJigglyWiggly_Really? You can hotdrop into massive battles at will. Takes less than 30 seconds.
Depends really on what you do. Taking territories (yields ~4 certs), repairing, reviving, and hacking provide quite a bit of them. I've put ~27 hours in and I have close to 900 cert points in total. This is just joining a random squad/platoon that was created to cap territories. As you get more experienced with the game, they'll start coming in a little quicker.also i wish they would speed up rate that you earn cert points.. its painfully slow now for people that dont sub or p2w

This is going to be changed soon and was mentioned in a dev diary/interview. They are going to increase the amount of experience you gain from kills/repairing/healing/etc while you're defending a zone to provide better incentives.
really boring it's like wait 5 minutes before each engagement also the hitreg doesn't feel very goodJigglyWiggly_
If you have the attention span of a 4 year old then yeah, maybe it is boring then. What were you expecting from a gamw with such huge maps and that amount of people. Come into the present Jiggly, things are different to Quake Live you know.

I play loads of different fps lol.
CSS, BF3, 1.6, cs go, cod4 s&d, COD2, RO2, tribes ascend, ut3.
I also play a lot of different genres that aren't fps lol.
Platformers, platformer puzzles, or w/e genre zelda is.
I think its awesome but yeah you're going to drop some money on it. It might be free to play, but lets face it they need to make money, and I'm not going to save up 1000 points for an unlock, certs to me are just for upgrades, not gear. It's actually not that hard to get certs once you get going. I get anywhere from 30-50 a day from pretty casual playing. If you're not rolling MAX, spend all your infantry points on nades and go light assault. Then find where the enemy is bottling up all their forces and use your jetpack to get above and toss one down. Nades are pretty effective I get killstreaks all the time with them and get certs like crazy.
I found it boring. It wasn't my cup of tea. The graphics are terrible. Yeah I know it's a F2P game but still ugly. Trying to deploy to engage in battle is a pain in the arse. Takes way too much time to deploy or redeploy just to get into the battle. Elann2008
The graphics are terrible? When I think of terrible graphics I think of Big Rigs or something. Might be too strong a word. As far as deploying and redeploying, it takes all of 10 seconds to redeploy and another 10 to get launched in the battlefield. Just don't close the map or it won't do it.
What's your method of getting into the battles? Are you just driving/running straight from the warp gate? Because that would explain it.

And the loading.. loading for every deploy? I would never drive around all the time in this game or cruise around on an aircraft... most of the lands are barren... and even using a vehicle or aircraft to get to one place or another is so boring, I just want to bash my head on the wall. :P Maybe I'm doing something wrong MythPro, but I just can't get into it. :/And the loading.. loading for every deploy? The trouble is the game doesn't teach you about any of this stuff. There's no tutorial and it's a damn shame. I feel it's turning away good players such as yourself. So no, you're not doing anything wrong.
Basically, you really don't have to drive or fly very far if you want to get into a battle. What you want to do, when you first spawn, is to go to your Map (M) and click the Redeploy button. This will allow you to choose a new spawn location that might be a little closer to the battlefield. Clicking on each name will show you where on the map it is. If you want to bring a tank or aircraft to the battle, the names will show little icons of each on the redeploy screen. These will be bases where you can summon them, but you just have to find the terminals for them there. These are not too hard to spot and will appear on your minimap in the bottom left. Press H to make it bigger if you need to. It takes a little to get used to at first. If you want to be airdropped into battles from the getgo, look for battles on the map screen that say Deploy on them. Click them and in 10 seconds you're in the battle.
You also have 3 separate continents to choose from. A desert, winter/snow, or temperate environment. To switch between the continents, you'll want to head to your warpgate (the place you spawn at when you first login) and you'll want to look for a terminal with a globe on it.

That 20 seconds to get back into the fight after death is important to the balance of the game. Without it, we would see ridiculous standoff situations. One side literally won't be able to kill the other side fast enough if respawn was 5 seconds or less. I played some Team Fortress 2 servers with instant respawn, and they became ridiculous spam-fests.
It can be frustrating to die from people you cannot see or anticipate in Planetside 2, but I have been in some crazy fun battles too. Part of the fun is learning builds and tactics to deal with varying situations.
I'm surprised people hate the graphics. You guys know this is a "massively multiplayer" game, right? You can either have cutting edge graphics and 32 player servers, or you can have moderate graphics and thousands of players in a square mile. Take your pick. I think the graphics are very impressive considering the size of the battles that can occur on your screen.
