...so I'm trying to get one that has respectable gaming capacity without shelling out the extra $$$ for a "gaming" pc. My question is... with a Core 2 Duo at 2.8 Ghz, 4 GB of RAM, a Geforce 9800 GT, and a 1440 by 900 monitor, will I be able to play modern games that look about as good as they did on my PS3 (which I played on a 720p HDTV)? Thanks in advance for your input, I appreciate it.

I'd pop for maybe a 3 to 3.2 Ghz C2D but thats a pretty decent system to start wit. You shouldn't have many problems with games unless you start maxing things, and thats only for the newer games.

You will find that most of the games you play will look better than your PS3. No slight against the Ps3 but there is a major performance rift in regard to GPU power when comparing to consoles.

Yeah, that'll look tons better than a ps3, with the exception of some games like gta4 and fallout 3 where they're really console ports and will look the same.

GTAIV is gonna look like the consoles because its a mess to begin with, and fallout 3 looks alot better on pc...and no it is not a console port. It was developed for pc first.

I didn't particularly enjoy Fallout 3, but it's true to say that it definitely isn't just another shoddy port.

games will run fine on that, most of them will run fine on high-max settings @ 30fps or better.

at 1440x900 if you went with a GTX260 Core 216 you would be set. And a Corsair 650TX psu.

You could also get lucky if you get open box components (newegg sells them...I got a rocking mobo for half the price as it was open box). I'd get a bigger monitor.
