im planning on getting a new fast harddrive to put my OS on for faster boot times and which do you think is a better bang for the buck and will work much faster?
a 10k HDD with more space?
or a SSD with less space?

I have a 7,200 rpm right now, but its a 16mb cache and I get crappy boot times so I think something is up with it.I wouldn't recommend buying an SSD YET.
They're still to expensive imo; you should buy a 7200 RPM drive unless you can afford the 300GB VelociRaptor (the 150GB is slower than 7200 RPM drives).

Which 7200RPM HDD?
I get crappy boot times on the 7200RPM IDE HDD in one of my older rigs, that doesn't mean that all 7200RPM drives perform terribly.

its a 640gb western digital. 16mb cache10,000 RPM hard drives don't seem to be worth it in comparison to high-end 7,200 RPM ones. I say that because for the cost of a VelociRaptor, you could probably afford a 1 TB or greater Caviar Black or similar drive and get most of the performance while having MUCH greater storage. I don't think SSDs are even close to worth the cost just yet. Sure, they can be fast, but you're paying quite a lot for very little space. (It's not quite as bad there as the volatile DRAM-based drives, though-those are obviously the fastest by far, but price-to-storage is excessively high and you need to keep them powered to retain data.)NamelessPlayerrecomendation for the fasted, most reliable 1tb 7,200k HDD on the market? I heard the Western Digital Black 640GB was one of the better 7,200 HDD's out there so this is a bit of a surprise

From my limited research, the two reasonably-priced options seem to be this Samsung Spinpoint F1 and this WD Caviar Black. The former is a bit more affordable, though. Of course, I'd probably want to do even more research, as I'm pretty much asking the same question. My current WD5000AAKS just doesn't offer enough space at the moment, and I want a drive to offload backup images and assorted data to...or perhaps become my new primary OS drive, if it's appreciably faster.recomendation for the fasted, most reliable 1tb 7,200k HDD on the market? sounds goodKingston just came out with a 40Gig SSD for around $85 w/ mail-in rebate that just might tickle your fancy.....

You're right-I overlooked the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB because it was out of stock, and thus not on the top of the Newegg list where I usually look. Makes me wish I had US$80 right now-or, better yet, double that so that I can get my first taste of RAID (albeit the inferior motherboard variety since I definitely can't afford to spend hundreds on a true hardware RAID card).[QUOTE="NamelessPlayer"][QUOTE="blazinpuertoroc"]

damn and our specs are almost the same! Would a 16mb to a 32mb make that much of a different? I noticed you have an X58 mobo too...any tips? any certain settings in the bios? any tweaks? or is it that your cache is better?

It's your Windows install. Something is up with it, but it's impossible to tell what from here. The cache makes maybe a 1% difference in boot times. Again, you have pretty much one of the fastest platter-based drives around. If you had a SSD the boot times would probably still suck, honestly. :D[QUOTE="blazinpuertoroc"]damn and our specs are almost the same! Would a 16mb to a 32mb make that much of a different?
