Simple question to those who have owned SSD's, were they worth it? Would it be worth it for me to invest in a smaller boot drive (just for the OS) for my next rig that I plan on building in the next year or two?

If you have the money to do so yes. I would reccomend atleast 120 gb. But if you don't its not really necessary. The price for ssd's are dropping fast so you may as well wait

Like I said it's still may be another year or two. So by that time I'll probably be able to buy one while staying in budget.

by then you may be able to use an ssd for primary storage. Then totally wait if you have no attention of buying anything soon
Windows 7 is really fast, even without an SSD/ Windows 8 will boot up even faster. Personally, I wouldn't get an SSD now, I"d spend the money on more important hardware, and then buy an SSD a little later down the line once they're cheaper, so you can keep your money to future proof your monitor or GPU.

Vey nicely put. I think you sume it up well. With windows 8 i was getting ssd like boot times a 7200 rpm drive.
I was going to buy it, but the price has been raised again to $127. :(http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-SSDNow-120GB-SVP200S3-120G/dp/B006YLTY2O/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1341868137&sr=1-10&keywords=kingston+120gb
Kingston 120GB SSDs on sale for $80. Something to look into.

A better question would be cache drive or boot drive.
XaosII
Thats a terrible question. Boot drive is infinitely better.
Cache only "useful" when you have 40 or less GB where storing your OS becomes problematic at such low amounts.
I've read sources where cache made a huge difference to boot times as well as applications. I guess it's only a good idea if it's a small drive.SSD drives are so outdated... It's all about sleep mode people! boot into windows in 1-2 seconds :P When the computers off your using 1w when in sleep mode 3-4w. Meaning using a SSD drive as an OS drive is pretty usless, gaming is a different story, but cost wise idk....
I set my computer to sleep every 5min turn off hybrid sleep and password upon login. I save a **** load on $ and it's ready to go in 1-2seconds.
So the only use for SSD to me is either for games or laptops.
so It'd only be worth it if your using it for a laptop.

I Just ram disk it... it's 100x+ faster.

Concerning sleep mode: that's what I always said about Windows 8. People act as if the boot time reflects the overall speed of the OS, when you can achieve the same effect through sleep. Still, SSDs aren't just about boot times.
It certainly makes things snappier. It's like the final piece of the puzzle to a snappy system. Depending on what you do, it could offer slight to astonishing results. If you're doing audio work that involves loading up millions of tiny samples, the non-existant seek time of an SSD does wonders to speed up the process. For games, don't expect a huge framerate boost, but at least your HDD won't be such a bottleneck in games with massive streaming like MMOs or sandbox games.
I love the fact that I can be installing a game and compressing files while playing another game simultaneously and practically unaffected. If hard drives had cores like CPUs, an SSD would be like a quad-core HDD.
You do realize that wasn't a SSD Vs HDD comparison and both PC's had an SSD installed? It was just showing you the motherboards fast boot feature, which is probably similar to Windows sleep mode (notice the computer on the left didn't POST).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cwNxz_n3Qc
watch this.

IMO with today's prices there's no excuse not to get a 128GB SSD for the OS and programs (unless you are on a really tight budget that is). It makes a huge difference in everyday tasks and it's hard to go back to HDDs after you've been using SSDs for a while. It's not just about boot times (I would argue that's the least important factor actually).
I guess I too will keep SSD's in mind for my first build in the future lol.
Anyone have any suggestions for brands, if that matters?

Lol, why do most non-regulars post like this? -.- Notice nobody else questioned my video but you? Not everyone has 20 iq and I did not even elaborate on the video, I just simply let it speak for itself.
I was showing the TC the fastest ssd+board setup in comparison to another to ssd another to show them their both fast since he already has an hdd he should sort of know how itll stack up against this video.
Also, lol "probably" are you guessing? I just had my mates rig here the other day to watch during vaca., I rest assure you z77+ssd is fricken too fast to see the logo most of the time on a cold boot too.
For anyone saying a SSD is amazing for normal everyday tasks they're full of themselves. There would be like no difference at all for normal everyday tasks.
~Want the SSD drive feel on a normal hdd? Follow these steps.
1.go into your performance options, disable everything but use visual styles, smooth edges, show thumbnails.
2 go to my computer select your HDD, right click it then properties uncheck allow index click ok then ignore all.
3. go to your services and disable windows search.
4. go to device manager click on ur HDD, click policies and check turn off windows
5. then finally run a defrag.
You will notice an improvement on ALL SYSTEMS no matter the specs. This will not improve windows boot time but everything else will load and open faster.

i gotta go fast
SSD array provides that
HD is 2 slow
and i came from 3x320gb in RAID 0

Well your not the average user bro. I've got a raid myself but I am actually never making use of it and I am not your average user.... Other than iso checking 360 games I am not getting anything out of the higher speeds. SSD vs HDD you would open folders at the same speed and many programs however when moving files its a different story. Yes a SSD can open programs fast but who the hell opens 20+ at the same time...
Meaning you must be moving large files everyday to actually make use of that speed. The only reason anyone usually does that is if they're a pirate :P
Other than moving files and benchmarking your not going to really notice any difference other than boot time and game load time.

How 'bout opening photoshop?yes actually i have one on my laptop 500gb one it's really quite fast. It felt fast. I did move it to teh 2nd slot in my laptop and got a real SSD which is better, but with 2 momentuses should be pretty SSD-likei was gonna get 2 seagate momentus xt for my next buid anyone here using them

Once you switch to SSD there is no going back, it is just better, programs open in a fraction and you dont need to do silly stuff like ramdisks etc.Silicel1
The only way someone who has an SSD would "go back" would be to sell it or if it breaks... I don't have an SSD and I'm really not interested in one because I don't use slow programs and I don't care about waiting a few seconds per game that's booting, it gives me time to relax a little bit. Plus, if I really cared all that much about my time, I probably wouldn't have so many gamespot posts:P. I'm pretty patient I guess, so I'd rather spend my money where it counts for me.
It depends how much you think is a lot of money. I bought my 240Gb Corsair SSD that has over half a gig per second read and write speeds for £193. It might seem a bit steep but SSD's are going down in price all the time. I use mine as a boot drive and for various games and programs like sony vegas, photoshop, WoW, LoL. It runs these programs a lot more efficiently than when they were on my 7200rpm hdd. The start up times are around 15 seconds for me. They surpass hdd's in every single way, apart from price at the moment.Simple question to those who have owned SSD's, were they worth it?
