1: I just remembered baldur's gate 2 had vocal chants for every school of magic. That's pretty awesome and incredily detailed. Wish more games did this. Not an all too important feature, but it's nice to have.

two worlds II has this. when u cast a spell he says some stuff in latin.
and you can do almost anything you can think of in the game. little details, even play music in the street for money. ( alittle side guitar hero game) among many others w/e you've ever done in any other rpg you can do in this game i guarantee it. horse mounts... you name it. hit the tavern and drink.
plus its pure open world. 5 times bigger then oblvion. picture obilvion... but as just one island you can go to. you don't even have to telport if you don't want. go buy a sailboat, and literally learn to sail and catch the wind, and in real time travel to the other oblvions..... its amazing. even find unexplored islands. explore anywhere find dungeons. This game really blew my mind as pushing new world ing raphics... like the first unreal did for me so many years ago.
the story might not be as good as the witcher 2. but if you want smooth gameplay with new age graphics in a TRUE open world. check it out.
I mean this game must be literally true dx10 at least. because it runs like a dream on win 7 64 bit, with dx 11 cards. unlike most of the scam dx 9 games that are out. like fallout 3 and the witcher 2 which look 10 years old and micro stutter up the wahzooo on my machine.
Mainstream RPGs seem to be less and less stat based all the time, some people have even difficulties regarding them as RPGs (see Mass Effect, Oblivion and Fallout 3). The indie scene seems creative enough to make up for the shortcomings of most mainstream rpgs.
I would love to see someone make a RPG Ultima 7 world interaction and NPC schedules, Ultima 5 atmosphere and Temple of Elemental Evil combat.
RPGs are missing the numbers behind the action these days. They are also missing the challenge (including a proper learning curve), and good character development choices in many cases. Also, the formulas that determine what happens in combat doesn't seem as complex. Not a lot of unexpected things happen in combat within today's RPGs. The virtual gears that run the combat engines of todays RPGs are much simplier than old RPGs.

well, it's not just a minor detail, spellcasting time and vocalization are part of dnd combat: there are silencing and disrupting counter spells. mages are very powerful, but long casting/chanting time (the more power the spells, the longer of the chanting) put them in vulnerable situation.
however, using BG2 as an example isn't really fair, since its handling of spell combat is just unparrelled. even of all other dnd games, only ToEE comes close, but still not quite.
as a comparison, in NWN2: MotB, Rammaq the demilich can just be grinding out...were it in BG2, the whole party will be imprisoned in a few rounds.
AD&D was not fun when you realized you did not know all the rules to the dice game and I hated playing that game half ***ed
The only people that had fun with role playing board games are people with high IQs or whatever. I always hoped that one day we would get D&D and AD&D made into a computer game where it would stay true to the board game and showing a virtual/3d board.
As for capturing all this in rpgs today I don't have much to say on that other than to say I would play an online game where we had a live D&D GM that called the shots and told the rolls to be made.

Have you ever tried temple of elemental evil..It was pretty decent as far as dnd games go..Its a little out dated now..When it first came out very glitchy..How ever with mods over time the game has become a cult..
Six party player system is whats also missing in todays games..Baldurs gate 2 was the closest thing will come to true dnd..Fighter, ranger, cleric. healer of your type. mage of your type and a rouge or bard..Having a lot of classes and a true inventory system ...With true dnd drops..Like yoru sword of dragonslayer +5 and your gauntlets of ogre power..Maybe a armor +5 some thing like this..People have got away from a true role playing game..Its sad but true..I miss those days,,
Dont worry guys. Final Fantasy XIII-2 will fix it!IxX3xil3d0n3XxI
right...it takes a console game to save pc gaming~
What's missing is deep combat and character building, and interactive game worlds that really reward exploration and experimentation. It's all been replaced by heavy narrative, story focus, and pointless NPC nonsense. Thank all the "herp derp story is most important!" people for this.
A sad trend in RPG's is that stats are starting to become less important. Now they are all focusing on player skill, set protagonistsand unsuccessful attempts at story branching.
RPG's are about making your own chars; min maxing your stats (which can takeseveral hours if you really want to optimize them) and then roleplay them yourself in an interestinguniverse which offers some rich but consistent lore.
