Those who think it's fine are those who have never used Linux, which explains the appallingly low standards of Windows users. The only downfall of Linux is that it simply cannot run games - and that's Microsoft's fault - through and through.

I'm not going to go into details about what's wrong with Windows, because many have already stated the issues.

Just going to add a couple of things here.

Vista's Prefetch will only speed up initial loading times for programs (which boils down to a few seconds). What is basically does is run programs in stealth in the background. You get the same effect if you just open a program and keep it running on any operating system. Obviously when you want to use that program it will start real fast because it was already open. This is one of the reasons it needs so much memory. The more programs you regularly use, the slower vista will get since it keep your most frequently used programs on prefetch.

If you are going to buy a new gaming OS certainly get Vista. You dont have to use it right away if it is not compatible with some of your games but in about 2 years you will want to upgrade. If you will not be gaming or using adobe products then just get Linux. It does everything you need for free and offers better security, more features and has tons of online support.

That is now how superfetch works and it only uses the memory if you have it available. It doesn't slow down the computer at all.
