- Will Wright's SPORE - Sep. 7, 2008 -

  1. On which consoles will it be released on day one? (I thought it was Wii only, but today I read PC and Mac only [article: http://www.news.com/8301-13772_3-9938601-52.html], I have heard Wii only, I have heard PC, Mac, Wii only... then some people on random forums have even suggested 360 and ps3 versions, but I think they just might be vastly uninformed.)
  2. Is it going to have downloadable content? (We all know its supposed to be an organic game that has so much content you could be busy for a solid month with no sleep and no life if you wanted to. However, user created content seems like an obvious necessity for this type of game to live up to its potential lifespan. Do you think the game should have some form of interaction between you and a content server / community? Do you think that would be the lifeblood of the game moving forward or a tertiary item to look at in 6 months?)
  3. Will it break any sales records or just be a game for gamers? (Artsy types like us that frequent video game forums are probably going to buy / try this game, no matter what. Regardless of which consoles it is on and the size of the potential install base, do you think Spore can compete with the sales of games that have hugely popular personas and fanatical fans like Halo or GTA?)

Thanks for your time.

1.If it comes out for the Wii it is going to be a very very very very watered down version of the game, to the point of probably being crap. As far as I knew it was a PC exclusive. A game with that kind of Ginormity (you like that work :p) just would not do well ported to a console.

2.It will have DLC, in fact, the last I read you will be able to download other peoples worlds. So if I lpayed through and had my world the way I wanted it, you could then DL it and the PC would take over playing my world the way I was playing it. So if I was pasive the PC would continue to be pasive and vice-versa.

3.Hmmm... that will be a tough one, if its as good as I am praying it will be I think alot of your Sim fans are going to jump on it. If that is the case it will sell extremely well, but with it being a new IP I dont see it breaking records.

well, the sims was a new ip, and it broke all sorts of records, including snatching the title as the best selling game of all time from mario.

I just find it hard to beleive they are going to be able to put that game on any system other than PC/Mac and it actually be fun to play, you are going to be missing out on so much of the games premise.

the Core game is PC/Mac only.

their will be console spinoffs. but they will be completly different, and if its any indictation based off the Sims, they will be a lot worse.

Maxis is focusing on the PC/MAC version more than anything. From what I heard, Spore on the Wii will have some similarities with the DS version. Clearly shows that the Wii version will be pretty different.

As much as I'm looking forward to Spore, I have a feeling it will be more or less of a failure. It'll still be a good game most likely, but when you consider the ambitious plans of Will Wright and his reputation (creating the best-selling PC franchise of all time), I don't think it's realistically possible for Spore to meet expectations. I also think that Spore will end up alienating a lot of people by attempting to appeal to a wider group; that is, the game won't have enough depth to appeal to "hardcore" players, and "casual" players will struggle to relate with it as they can with the Sims.
