From what I've seen and read of Spore, it just sounds to me like an RPG with NOTHING but grind. There are no quests or objectives that I've seen. There is no story line. You just create someting, run it into the world and kill things until it levels up and you can make upgrades to your creature.....

How is that a game? I hope I'm missing something, I really do! I'm sorry but creating something and throwing it at enemies for a few hours for no reason other than to kill them isn't much fun to me.

I'm not much of a fan of single player RPGs anyway but Spore sounds to me like a single player RPG where the only thing to do is kill things weaker than you.....

Please tell me there is more to Spore!!

Have fun

Its based on evolution: you start as a specimen collecting things like a platform game, then you evolve and you have the freedom to customise your creature in an unlimited number of ways. You will be sharing content with the rest of the peoplea around the world playing spore. They are designing it to become like a social networking system similar to Myspace (MySpore) and Wikipedia (Sporepedia).

Then it is like a strategy game how you can build you civilisation, with vehicles space ships, etc. You can go to war etc, you can create a culture.

Its not an RPG: they are based around dialogue trees, moral dilemmas, quests and skill systems.

the game has missions,

as a creature you have to survive and somehow get a possy (not very clear yet)

in tribe, you have to do things like tame creatures, send recruiters, take over other tribes, keep food supply, even give gifts to tribes

civ phase you have to conquer the globe, with objectives

space has plenty of objectives like varous colonizatio nattempts and such

there are objectives, they just havnt been talked about much yet

Its a Life Simulation mixed with RPG/RTS/Action elements ...

How is that not a game? You build a Species, you build society, you build vehicles, you then go find other planets and remodel them ect ....

Thank god, I posted this question in the Spore forum on this site and just got a bunch people posting derogatory comments at me. At least here I get some inteligent feed back :)

From your posts I feel a little better about Spore, I was aware of the whole gaining technology but didn't really understand how this would be different than upgrading your creatures, with another arm for example.

I'm still not convinced though, I'll wait until I've read alot of reviews and maybe even played it before deciding on getting it. I don't mind slow games, (I'm currently playing WoW ffs) but I like a story line and a feeling of purpose beyond personal progression. Maybe I'm just a mental or something but never mind.

I'm beginning to feel like the only person alive that thinks Spore is pointless dribble to be honest.

Have fun n stuff

I think in a way you create your own storyline of your own world - don't worry: similar criticism of the Sims - and whether it has a point - has come up before..

I'm also seeing a few mentions of Civ, is the feeling that Civ fans will like this because I hated Civ with a passion? Maybe this just isn't the game for me I guess.

I hope others like it, but I seriously doubt I will by the sounds of things. I'll just sit in the corner and grumble about games being not as fun as they were in my day.

Have fun

I have briefly played CIV 4 - it looks nothing like that. That is a turn based game, all your movements here are in real time like a third person game when you are controlling your creature at least. But remember there are RTS elements too almost like base building etc.

its open sandbox, I classify it as a game because of its interactivity and general design etc.

Sims is a game, its kinda the same thing with a tamogotchi person whom you do bad things to. Spore is just taking it a step further and letting you create a whole evolutionary cycle etc.

Yes that and the fact that it will revolutionise content sharing in games. It sounds so exciting!

Clearly, Spore isn't for me then. Building your own story and objectives and evolving that to RTS kinda game play isn't for me. I'll just contine not understanding what's interesting with this game and let others enjoy it. I just wanted to try to understand what was so interesting with this thing, guess I never will. Same with The Sims I guess.

It is probably going to be one of the most revered games in the history of gaming. Being able to evolve a creature from bacteria to space-faring planet destroying/colonising "aliens?" I'm in.

I think you should try - we all should give it a go first - before a judgement can be made - who knows: maybe you are right and it is one of the most over hyped piles of cow dung. Lets just wait and see! Remember that is all just personal preference: I don't like GTA: San Andreas for example, but thats just me.

Ok, well Spore is about being creative, a community game, it wont have any superb set direction, its completely open, its for casuals and hardcore gamers.

I agree on San Andreas, It was OK for a muck about but it got stale very quick. I've found that with all open ended games I've played I just get bored, with no driving force or direction I end up wandering around and wondering what I'm supposed to be doing and end up just quiting and playing something else.

Bah! I'll give it shot, I might be suprised! But I seem to think I'll end up getting bored quick and playing something else. I seem to have larger attention spans for multiplayer games than single player these days. I used to be all about the single player but things change.

Okay I am glad you changed your mind.

But how bad was San Andreas? No save system, bland graphics, no story, the flying missions

Its funny that you should mention pointless actually and that I brought up San Andreas. Now that is a game that you could justify as pointless in a way: You do all those missions for that CIA guy, driving all over the place for him, flying, stealing the jet - and for what? nothing! He has not impact on the story whatsoever really. Have you finished the game?

Well even if games don't have a storyline or quests, missions or whatever, how can you say its not a game? If you ask me, "a game" is something fun and something to do and enjoy. Everyone has his own "explanation" of what a game is. If you don't like it, than you don't like it lol, but DO NOT say it's not a game.

Spore looks like it will be a really unique game that I am definitely looking forward to playing. What worries me most is that it will be too single player. I am a fan of online games and if Spore will let me take my aliens to planets created by other people and interact with the civilizations created by others around the world, then I will love Spore. If i'm stuck only playing by myself, then it will get boring quick.

I am pretty sure you can do that but the big draw card of the game is the ability to seamlessly share content. While you are making whatever creature that is visible to other people in the game world *I think* i am just going by what they said in the interview.

It will work like a social networking page so you can track that person to see what other stuff they are making. They compared it to Myspace etc, There is even a feature called Sporepedia.
