[QUOTE="F1_2004"]We laugh, but 500,000 is a ridiculously large number for a single game. Crysis, for example, was a fine game and had nothing wrong with it, but almost 500,000 downloads. Imagine how many more & better quality PC games we'd be getting if piracy was nonexistent and devs didn't lose a decent-sized percentage of their sales to piracy. It's hard to deny that game quality has been going down the drain lately with most devs having to merge into the big publishers (EA) to keep in business.sSubZerOo

Except Crytek claimed that some where around 10 million copies were pirated, not 500k.. AM I the only one who notices this>?

And where did they get that number... ? Even if they could reliably say 10m or even 500k downloaded it, it doesn't mean 500k installs, or those people were able to play it.

I'm not saying they did this in particular (they've had other methods), but for example a lot of publishers stick a quiet phone-home that simply tells them it's been installed when it gets a chance. If 10 million people installed the game and only 1 million bought it, they can guess that something is odd, despite multiple installs, etc. For example, even the pirated versions of Spore should be firing up the EA Downloader in the background, which IS a blatant phone-home which ties the game's CD-key in and recognizes when one's not legit - it doesn't block you from playing, though. EA's getting a lot of hard data on exactly how many people pirate the game, and they're happily falling into it and feeding them tons of very specific numbers.

If I were Maxis, I wouldn't feel too bad. The people who pirated the game wouldn't have purchased the game anyways. Pirates are pathetic though, seriously.

I doubt it's the most pirated game on PC. :roll:DanielDust

you're dealing with people who claim Crysis was downloaded 100 million times.
