In response to community pressure to scrap this game and just make Knights of the Old Republic 3, the team suggests that there's enough content in Star Wars: The Old Republic to call it "Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9."
Twelve full-time writers have been working on the content for this game for years already. The writing department was the first priority when it came to staffing so these writers have been working on the game longer than anyone.
Didn't want it to be an MMO. biggest_loser
''Didn't want it to be an MMO.'' - that's all you could say? This news almost brings tears to my eyes. I.. I never really thought that some article about one MMO could make a man so sad.
If this new Bioware project is bigger than all its previous games combined, then I'm at least ten times more disappointed about it than compared to playing Spore and Mass Effect, combined.
I mean, who knows if we'll ever see another Knights of the Old Republic game; the second one left us with a very inconclusive ending. I'd rather have Kotor 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, not another MMO. It's so... uh, please, someone hold me; I think I'm going to faint.

How can you keep a great on-going story for an MMO?

pay attention to the quests, for one. something most people in WoW seem to avoid.
The trees have been corruped, the aimals have been tainted, the whole wilderness has gone mad!
Go slay that dragon who can take on a human form and then kill some more corrupted villains.
The whole fantasy setting of World of Warcraft and Blizzard's previous titles are average at best. They have been done and done and overdone; the mere thought of comparing them to the storylines of Kotor 1 & 2 is absurd. Honestly, if Blizzard is renowned for something, then it's not the immersive stories they can create.

i agree with you, its not even going to finish the story, not only that but its set 300 years after kotor, so no revan, no exile, all the chars we came to love are gone...and instead of them we're gonna have to deal with the annoying mmo comunities..
they should make it like diablo2 where if you want to play offline single play youre able to at least,
gah theres no end to mmos now its just pretty much gonna be a game about a war...that never ends, oh you beat the last boss... heres an expansion, just to kill more bosses and get moregear..
mmo can feel like jobs, if youre in a guild youre expected to show up for raids and such, and on a schedule, and if youre not in a guild you can't do raids, because if you do its with a pug group which is a horrible experience in itself...than grinding for currency to upgrade gear, mmo are sooooo gear driven its annoying, if you dont have good gear youre called a noob, and nobody will play with you, so you constantly have to upgrade gear, and than when you get good gear the game becomes stale and boring becuase theres nothing else to do...thats why mmo fail to deliver good story telling, they just base everything on grinding for better items, in a world of greedy players............................jfispdafo0sdf67yds9hjn
look at wow, supposedly the best MMO, heres how the game goes, grind as fast as possible to get to 70, (there is never groups for any lower instances, even though they are alot more fun than any end game ones.) grind as fast as possible to get good gear, when you have good gear, sit in shat and do nothing, you might raid but theres no reason because youve done them all hundreds of times, and with expansions its rinse and repeat, the very same thing. oh you could do heroics, but so what, its the same thing just more hp and moredmg from the mobs, its sooooooooooooooo repetitive.

not really a news or revealing or anything, it's simply confirming what we've already knew. no MMO for me.
i think i will keep my eye on it because I am a fan of most of bioware's games including KOTOR, but i'm not an MMO fan so if its not superbly different than all existing MMOs (which i dislike) then I'll just pass.
I'd also like to add that the graphics look horrible. the lighsaber handles are huge and ugly, the electricy things in the screen shots are horrible as well. I know its early, but until they show me better looking graphics, this game is an eyesore.
It looks like KOTOR in a candy factory. Why do developers think we need this pastel-colored hell? I wanted to like this, but having seen the kind of cartoon graphics they've used, my excitement level has bottomed out. mysterylobsterI agree, they need to change the theme, one of the ebst parts about KOTOR was its maturity. This MMO though, has a TON of potential, and I hope they take advantage of everything they can.
Well the MMO doesn't surprise me, but I was seriously hoping they would have made a skill/profession based game and not a class based one. They want this game to be different than the other MMO's on the market, but seem to be using the same old EQ/WoW formula. *sigh*
As for the compelling storyline, I really have my doubts to just how amazing this is going to be. Unless the majority of the quests you undertake involve cinematics and voice overs, I don't honestly see how it's going to be any different than the text-based quest info in WoW. Nobody reads that, they just skim for what they have to do, where to go, then click Accept and go out and do the quest. The only difference I see being presented here is that they are having real ramifications for the choices your character makes, and how NPC's behave and react to them. That sounds great, but I can see it now... "But I didn't know this would happen to my character! It's not fair!" And thus they'll nerf the repercussions for you actions, to dry the tears of the crying masses. Happens with every MMO. They start out on the right foot, then always cave to the whiners. And with EA backing it, you can rest assured that BioWare would be pressured into satisfying the masses, even if it means nerfing a fun feature in a game.
I hope they prove me wrong, but I won't hold my breath.
Yeah, they definity can't take the class approach like SWG NGE, WOW, AOC, WAR, etc... or it will fail, they need to stick with a complex profession system.Well the MMO doesn't surprise me, but I was seriously hoping they would have made a skill/profession based game and not a class based one. EA or not, all MMOs will be a thing of mass anyway, even if it starts out wanting to be different. The main reason to publish MMO is for the maximum profit (monthly fee and the least piracy impact), they have to do everything to reach the widest possible potential gamers, casual in the wide, and keep them paying monthly fees.
If they have not made an engine yet they should buy this one

it would cute production time down, but it all depends on their dirction they want to go.

so I guess since the writers of the other Knights games are so good, then they must be able to "keep a great on-going story for an MMO."

No. The quality of a story is not measured by the numbers of pages.
I'm not saying the game won't be good or won't have a consistent story for an MMO; it just won't be able to offer the character interaction and story the previous games and single-player games in general have; no MMO can or at least will be able to for a long time, in my opinion.
I believe that in the end, the extreme length of an MMO will compromise the quality of its story which was the driving force in the previous Kotor games; the moral choices seem promising, but again, I doubt they'll be as fulfilling as the ones in a 'true' RPG.
Good story writers need time; MMO's need monthly updates. And besides, the writers got a considerable amount of inspiration from the Star Wars movies.
I was seriously hoping they would have made a skill/profession based game and not a class based one.

I didn't read anything about the game, but after reading this, I don't need to. I'll avoid it. There's no potential in gameplay that has been done to death.

doesn't this completely contradict itself? He said nothing of number of pages, he brought up Bioware's stellar history with storylines and character interaction as evidence that they can do a great job and probably will on this project. What better way to get an indication of future quality than look at the developer's track record? You seem to feel the same way judging by your comments on the quality of Blizzard's writing.

oh please, KOTOR was made for the MMO type genre. your choices don't really make any sort of difference and there's only one choice at the end of the game that determines which ending you get. it's not that branching.

The argument of the very limited number of endings the player gets in the game isn't a very thoughtful one; there are enough choices you have at your disposal as a whole in Kotor. Kotor revolves mainly around good & evil choices though; it's not about the endless amount of choices in a given situation, but the radical difference and meaningfulness with which the options you have available influence the story. Having more choices at your disposal doesn't mean it will bake a better story.
I don't think I'll see that in the Kotor MMO. And besides, most RPG's revolve around no more than two choices when it comes to the main story.
I can see it now Star Wars Galaxies 2!!!!
Starts off super awesome, appeals to more people, young crowd, carebears whining and QQing about getting killed in PvP or complaining about certain classes being more awesomer then theres and thus NERF bomb comes and game turns crap
don't know why they just could taken these "12" writers and actually make a damn sequel and end the series with a triology

It doesn't contradict itself. Plain and simple, I don't think BioWare can keep up with the MMO type in terms of story-telling.
Like I've said:
Good story writers need time; MMO's need monthly updates. And besides, the writers got a considerable amount of inspiration from the Star Wars movies.
Oh good, I'm not the only one who's disappointed that it's an mmo. I love rpgs, I love the stories, the gameplay, and I love Bioware games, every single one that I've been able to play, I've loved every second. MMOs though, I haven't played because I don't really want to have to deal with other people in the game world, and it seems that in most of these games that they're designed so that you have to play with groups of people so that you can get to a certain level so that you can progress to the more interesting quests that you can't do without being at a high level and you can't get to the high level without playing in a group. Yeah, that was all circular reasoning but that's the way it seems to be.
I didn't care if I have to play as a new character again, I just wanted another Kotor game and obviously, that's not going to happen. "We decided not to bow to the COMMUNITY pressure and make a Kotor 3, because we can put all the stuff that we would have put in that game and more sequels into this one! Screw you if you like to play single player."
I'm not paying a monthly fee.nicknees93

I never said that it would be a bad game. Actually, I think the game seems quite promising; giving the player the freedom to affect the storyline has never really been done before in an MMO. It's just not Knights of the Old Republic 3...
