Enough of this already. ToR WON'T BEAT WoW, but it doesn't need to.... it will become the next HUGE MMO which will take a lot of players away from WoW, but no, it won't make WoW shut down their servers... I just want it to be good...why are so many people obsessed with the "will it beat WoW" concept...?

I've yet to be convinced that Bioware's skill with single player RPGs will translate over to a game that warrants being an online-only experience with a monthly subscription, and the Star Wars license has long since stopped holding much of any meaning for me. How many Star Wars games are there now, about 500? :P

Will it beat WoW? As in, will it have more subscribers? I kind of doubt it. Does it really matter anyway? I mean, I'm sure they'd like as many as they can get, but one does not have to "beat WoW" to make a nice profit.

Im not talking about wow shuting down their servers and about servers well they will have thoose for a long time to come. but sw:tor will beat wow in players cause bioware has some of the best games ever and if it is bioware making it then wow has no hope..

Would love nothing more. I think it'll be very good and I like how it has story where our decisions affect things. Other mmos might have cool epics but in between those are tons and tons of kill so and so amount, collect so many of something, right click on certain amount of objects and even in the epics you don't have story choces in those. Won't know exactly until we play it but I think if anyone can revolutionize MMOs, it's Bioware. If it is good it'll be awesome because you'll be closer to living in the universe whereas other MMOs have you riding a set ride that has a bunch of boring grind to reach each epic quest and even in the epic quests you don't get choices other than kill so and so lol.

It will probably really successful. If it beats WOW it will only be because WOW is getting old now.

I'm scared the gameplay will suck. I didn't like Neverwinter 1 & 2 or Mass Effect that much because I couldn't stand the way the character control felt,I can't explain it. Maybe it's because the characters seem sluggish in their movements? The stories were alright, but they weren't that entertaining for me. I really hope there's another good Star Wars game though, I miss playing them.

ya wow is getting older and players are starting to look for a new fix. Bioware has made some really good games so im hoping they can put what experience they have and try to slam it into the mmo slot. do i think wow will shut down...no it wont stop for years to come i mean people still play half life online and wow is head and shoulders above that i was addicted to it for a long time and i hope bioware can fill in that gnome mages sized hole in my heart

I'm still holding out for Stargate Worlds. Star Wars:ToR looks good, except there's jedis, which will just be one whine fest after another. I think ToR forums will be more active than the MMO itself.

Im sick of this beating WoW stuff.

If Star Wars - The Old Republic gets way more popular than WoW; who cares? WoW has already proven itself as a great MMO and that is all that matters.

You can't say it has beaten WoW, its just that Star Wars - The Old Republic; being new and all has become more popular.

I bet 2 or so years after Star Wars - The Old Republic (if successful) you will be spamming stuff like "What game will kill Star Wars - The Old Republic?"

For the record; I don't even play WoW but I can say that it is the great MMO of these ages.

I stopped playing WoW.... 6-8 months ago because I got sick of the stupid dailygrind. Do I think SW:TOR has a snowball's chance in hell of putting a dent in their consumer base? No

That doesn't mean I'm not excited to give it a try myself, I just know better. If anything itmight attract a lot of us ex-WoWers if they do it right.

to many blizzard/wow fanboys.

warmaster670

Maybe 1 in 1000 play the game because they are fanboys. The rest play it because they enjoy it. Only a few people stick around after it isn't fun anymore and play it until they become angry, bitter, whiney forum posters on other sites. They just forget the time it was fun and focus on the fact that Bliz didn't keep it fun for them the 6 months they spent doing daily quests.

It is too early to tell how the Old Republic will fare. The latest PC Gamer US issue (September 2009), they were quite enthusiastic about it. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

There just not enoght information to really give an answer. If you want to look at a MMO that may change the way they are played then you really should look at Star Trek. They are moving away from the whole tank, heal and so on.

What has Bioshock to do with this? It was developed by 2K games and it was a bad game, so I don't know why you mentioned it.

Well said. You know, WoW has been one of the top MMO's for how long now? If SW comes along and "beats" so many years after it's release what really does that say? Not much in my opinion. The only testament here is how long WoW was able to stay on top...very few MMO's have pulled this off.

i stopped playing WOW just before BC. it had lost it's charm for me. I'm much more interested in SWOR though i don't think it'll kill WoW. but WoW isn't getting pretty old. it's going to die slow like EQ did.

Same here...quit WoW before BC came out, tried out BC a couple of months later, was done for good. SWOR does interest me as well and I could hardly care less if it doesn't kill WoW. I would be much more happier if it flourished initially like Warhammer but didn't die off fast once the hype went down.

played WAR from beta till about 3 weeks ago. it wasn't the lack of hype that is killing WAR. it's the lack of balance in the game and the pve requirements thrown into a game that supposed to be about RvR. heck the end game was a PVE encounter :P

From the information so far im kinda afraid that it will be a "single player" game that you pay a monthly fee for...

NPC companions while doing quests? Romancing npc's in a mmo? They want people to "reroll alts" so they can play the entire story... And alot of more things...

Reading the Tor Forums from time to time i end up asking myself what people think a mmo is? Some of the suggestions you read (that also get alot of support) makes me think that alot of people want the game to be a single player game with a chat in it.

But oh well... there is not alot of information out yet. And even if i endup not enjoying the game more then i enjoy wow i still want them to do good (if the game is good ofc), so that blizzard have some competition.

Competition = More money spent on creating conent, new ideas, customer service and the speed that you get content in. So its a win / win situation for both player bases.

TOR will be 10000x better then WOW. Wow used to be an amazing additive game, but Blizzard wanted more and more money which ruined the game. I played wow for four years, and quit after clearing Sunwell in July, and sold my account because the writing on the wall was there.

You did well. Whats the point of raiding sunwell over and over when the quest greens from Borean tundra are better than the gear there. IMO the biggest mistake that blizzard made was making it so that the level increased in ever expansion pack as opposed to giving people the incentive to reroll new classes with more content so that all previous content wouldn't be pointless. When was the last time anyone did MC with 40 level 60's?

That's a bit of an exageration. Most of my sunwell gear lasted until level 77-78 until I started getting worth-while upgrades. The problem is that Bliz made mistakes in the original WoW that is still haunting them; 40-man raids. It was a dumb idea but I doubt they will fix it.Level 80s go there because they are bored. The player base has a mentality that hurts it even more:

I learned long ago to not expect new MMO's to be great. We can all hope it will turn out great, but until I get into some form of beta, not going to assume it will be great or somehow better than WoW. Made that mistake with Age of Conan, then Warhammer. Not going to do that again. I hope it will turn out good, but I have a feeling that ToR might end up being WoW with Lightsabers. The only thing that will destroy WoW will be Blizzard themselves. They keep making the game ridiculously easy, removing what little challenge the game had. I want a game where you actually have to work for things. I was never a raider, but even I like the satisfaction of achieving things. When you have everything handed to you on a silver platter it's meaningless. I think a big mistake a lot of MMO devs make is that they try to attack the WoW monopoly by trying to be WoW. That's totally a misguided concept. You can't possibly beat WoW trying to be a WoW knock-off. They need to do their own thing and be unique.

In regards to the mentality of WoW players, I think a lot of it has to do with the focus of the game. Part of WoW's problem is that the entire game revolves around getting better gear. Whether you PvE, PvP, or whatever, the name of the game is "better loot". I remember a time when MMO's actually encouraged social interactions and didn't revolve around loot. Sure, there was loot to be had, but that wasn't the end all be all of the entire game. In WoW, everybody just grinds as fast as they can to get the next shiny purple item.

"LFG Scholo"

"why? just go to outlands for better gear"

I admit I did slightly exaggerate, but the 71 greens were better than some of the Kara epics. I mean come on. The scaling just got so bad. 110+ dps on a level 70 green???? WTF????

TOR will be 10000x better then WOW. Wow used to be an amazing additive game, but Blizzard wanted more and more money which ruined the game. I played wow for four years, and quit after clearing Sunwell in July, and sold my account because the writing on the wall was there.

Bioware definitely has a good enough resume to pull this off i put faith in them

I just want it to be a good game and I couldn't care less if it beats Blizzard's rubbish game or not.

Star Wars:TOR looks way better than WOW imo. They said something about no grind and all quests being heroic and important.I think it'll revolutionize MMOs. All other MMOs seem boring now lol like kill this amount of enemies, collect these objects from fallen enemies, do some right click action on these objects, do those same style of quests for a long time in between boss quests. I like that TOR video. Combat looked great and the story choices are awesome. Finally can control your destiny and feel connected to the world instead of "ride the roller coaster" along a set path, no choces in the story, that a ton of MMOs have. No dreading getting on to grind tons and tons of mind-training quests just to get toone excitingboss and then go back to working all the quests that contain grind lol Every quest wiill be heroic is what they say.

it will have a story, tor that is, so i will probably play it based upon that. bioware makes it, i loved kotor, so hopefully they dont mess this one up. as for it beating wow, i doubt it, wow has too many followers, and alot of the kotor players were xbox people. but ill pay to play this game because i am tired of mmo's without a good story. wow was utterly boring because it had no story.

why do you assume wow is going to still be the top mmo when this star wars mmo is out ? wow is meant to loose 6 million subs when the court case is over and with aion on the horizon with 3/4 million subs already I easily see it taking over.

But anyway if you check the latest bioware development diary the gameplay looks very dull and the gfx just seem out of place with a star wars game

Disagree with the graphics looking dull. Personally they seem vibrant and easy on the eyes. How exactly are they out of place in a star wars game?

So your idea of Star Wars graphics is all gritty, grey and brown like Gears or Fallout 3?
