Start new PC build or just go Steambox?

So, I have a laptop that we can use as our general-use device....but my desktop is dying.

I have an old quad core 6600 with an HD 5770. Now, I'm just debating on what to do next. Do I start the rebuilding process or just go for a Steambox? I'm aging quickly ;-) 38 years old and don't spend a ton of time with PC gaming....but do enough that I still need a feasible option. Budget is tight...so I would likely be saving up for something or just starting an upgrade process slowly but surely. Suggestions?

I'd rather build my own pc than to buy a steam box. ....which is basically a branded PC.

and I'd probably save money doing it too.

I say build it if you have time to shop around for parts and assemble them. If not, then consider sites like ibuypower or cyberpower

If there's ever a point that Steamboxes are so mass produced that they are cheaper than building your own - that's when it might be a good idea to consider a Steambox. I don't think that's the case now or anytime soon so you just def build your own PC.

The first question would be: "What is your budget and can you salvage some of your older parts?"

Top canditates for salvage are RAM, HHDs, cases, fans, DVD player/writer, Windows License etc.... anything you want or can keep.

Regarding RAM, you are probably using DDR2, so that is out the window. HHDs are going to be real old at almost 8 years.

At this point you are looking at a complete rebuild so we need to really start looking at your budget.

I'd rather build one then go with anything pre built, but that's just my pref. Like other users have said, it's all about budget though and what you want to spend.

I don't think Steam Machines will be out for a while yet. Better to just build your own.

@mohoc2000: case and dvd/cd rom he can reuse. Windows license aswell. Keyboard and mouse too. Oh and monitor. If he can reuse all that, he has much more money to spend on new hardware as mobo, cpu, gpu and HDD/SSD and RAM.

I'm more into building my own. You make it the way you want it too look and run, and you end up knowing much more about your system and what's on it compared to the alternative.
