i jus created my profile yesterday and hav been trying to add friends ever since. :X

when i click add a friend, it just gives me this msg: Some features of the Steam Community become available once you have games in your Steam account.

but i already hav portal and alien swarm in my steam account. so why isnt it letting me add any friends?

anyone has had the same problem?

If you got both of those for free, and those are the only things on your account, you can't use the features that require games. They mean you need a paid game, essentially.

Wtf is this thread, seriously, why do you want Steam anyway? Why not just just get Windows Live Messenger (MSN) or something if all you want to do is talk to your friends. Steam comes first as a Digital Distribution service, and IM second, IMO, What's the point in getting Steam if you don't even want to game on it?

Its a feature that Valve provides to their customers. If you never bought a game you dont get the full benefits. I think some people can add you as a friend, you just cant add them. If it really is a problem then get xfire

If you don't own any Steam games just use XFire instead

You need to purchase a game, not something free. I like it this way. This keeps the huge flood of scammers away from saying HAI DIS IS STEAM ADMIN GIEF ACWOUNT DETALS OR YOU GOT BANT LOL

It's to prevent scammers from adding random people and sending them messages with links to phishing sites or messages asking for their username/password posing as customer support/Valve employees. It's a reasonable form of extra security IMO.

People who haven't purchased anything on Steam can't add people to their friends list. People can add you no bother though, so just get your friends to add you.

exactly. its a way to protect users from scammers and spammers. it sucks, but its a great thing. get xfire, i use that primarily, and i like the chatting features on it better anyways.
