Yeah smart ass, the games run fine once downloaded. The problem is with downloading the software through Steam. I've tried multiple locations with multiple service providers yet they still can't deliver a steady download that doesn't stop for no reason at all. Not worth my time or effort when I could have walked right into any local store and bought the retail version.daviwinn
you can't see the conclusion by yourself, can't you?
it's your laptop fault - i can't help you but i guess someone on hardware forum could
and yes you could go to a store and buy game, it's fast, easy and you get a cool box with it :D
Don't insult my intelligence. I've already found the cause of the problem, as well as a workaround for it (and it is unrelated to the hardware) BUT it was a complete waste of my time due to shoddy coding and misappropriation of resources of Steam's part. daviwinn
well sorry but anyway you've learned your lesson...go to a store and buy games instead of downloading them :)
So your only complaint is that the DL was slow? Having DL'd plenty of games from steam I'd say its around 150-200kbs on average which is pretty decent. Are you really that impatient that waiting another couple hours was a deal breaker for you? You know you could just do something else while the games finished.
After getting CDs for years I can say I personally prefer DDSs like steam much more, but again no one is forcing you to use it unless you want to play a valve game so by all means buy the game itself.

See that's the thing, the downloads are stopping completely. I leave it on overnight (like I do with my 360 when downloading Movies and such) and expect it to be done the next day. That would be fine with me. The problem is that after about 10 or 15 minutes the download just stops.
Being the resourceful person I am I check into it. It seems that this is happening to many others as well. Official FAQ's were written, forum topics have been devoted to this, troubleshooting steps are posted by tech support, etc. The problem for is that all these things take time to look into and perform (just the hours today cost me much more than the games are worth). Then they give a "solution". Sit there and watch it, when a problem comes up, click on this or that right away. WTF. I don't want a band aid, I want a real solution! It is as if they don't know how to fix it or they just don't care. Either way that isn't the kind of company I want to do business with. (the funny thing is that this doesn't seem to happen with Valve software, only stuff from other developers)
Meh, I don't have the patience for this. I'll just stick with my consoles for gaming and use my computer for business purposes. All I really need on the computer is Puzzle Quest and I'll be happy. Peace.
Well you could be right, yet my connections run flawlessly with all my other applications and services. Torrents, Xbox Live, Amazon Unbox, etc. all involve long downloads of large files and I don't encounter any of these problems. If these companies can handle it Steam should be able to as well.

It's most likely your ISP and/or location. I have Steam and I get over 1000kbps DL speeds, so I'm happy with it.
Yea avoid Dell. Steam runs great for me.roulettethedog
QFT. i love steam, not a single problem so far.

No, it isn't.Sure is! You haven't played TF2, HL2 and Portal... some of the greatest PC game experiences of all time.
Haha...owned.
Anywyas, to the TC all services experience issues from time to time. Everything from cable tv, satelite, phone, cell phones, ect, ect. Steam is a pretty solid application all around, and MILLIONS of people use it with none to very little issues. But like other serivce providers, can experience a certain degree of problems. But when you consider how often the service works, and for what percent of the customer, STEAM is a rock solid service.
Also, when comparing the policies and features of steam (against other DL services like Direct2Drive), nothing really compares.
So when we consider all the facts, your little rant sounded pretty childish...
"I had a problem, steam sucks waaaaaah!"
I don't like steam either. Most people didn't and those people who didn't still don't. The fact that you're forced to install it and run it in order to play certain games just PISSES some people off.
It's like I bought a game off of a store shelf and I still have to put up with that BS in order to install the game. It's aggravating because it's an inconvience. Especially if the machine isn't internet accessable.
It's just another backround application taking up more resources AND I don't want it running. I'm tempted to steal valve games just so I won't have to be annoyed by steam.

Steam uses a minsucle amount of resources if you are seeing a performance hit.. I don't know what to say.. Upgrade your 5 year old computer?
Steam is a replacement of copy write protection.. As it stands people alot of copy write protections are a pain in the ass, Steam and Stardock are the only ones that seem to be getting the message and finding ways of different kinds of copy write or not using it at all.
Well I don't know what to say about the internet accessable.. I can see it possible in very limited circumstances.. But welcome to the 21st century, most people have internet or can easilly get access to a broad band wireless service..
nope this is actually a fairly recent prob, check the steam forums even I'm having probs downloading stuff. It's either slow or stops for no reason. it's on Valve's end and its a steam problem. but you picked a bad time to try steam because its usually good.nutcrackr
Yep. I've never had any problems DL'ing anything off of Steam... until about 4 days ago. I decided to DL a couple of game demos off of Steam, and so I started the DL then turned off my monitor and went to bed. When I woke up, I expected to see all my demos ready to play but instead they were only like halfway done. So I tried resuming the DL and about 30 or so minutes later I noticed the DL had paused again! So yeah it was very annoying. But I love Steam, and I know they'll fix these issues.
[QUOTE="Baselerd"]There is no problem with steam. If it works for millions of users perfectly fine, but you have issues with it, why would it be steam?chrisrooR
no it doesn't :|
where are the million of compaint about it then?
Steam was bad in 2004, but in 2008 it's the best. It beat in everyway xbox live and for free without ads.

and if i get moded and frozen again for calling someone stupid and that they are stupid and just plain dumb i will be mad sense you just swar!
Again, meh. Steam gave me a bad first impression. For those of you who have no problems with it, good for you. To me it blows. And no matter what some of you think these problems are widespread at the moment (and unfortunately it isn't hardware or ISP related). Whether they will continue or not is unclear but as you know, the first impression is the most important one.
Out of 15 million users less I've heard less than 1% complain. Widespread now has a new definition.Again, meh. Steam gave me a bad first impression.
