Hi guys, its weird i have been playing various steam games like css, dod:s and tf2 for example, css and dod s run fine but i only get like 140 fps on max setting (1080p res) and 8xaa. I know thats great, but shouldnt it be like 300 fps or more? lol, also tf2 lags with my card, dropping down to 40 fps (wtf!). Other games like batman AA run really nice, benchmarked on max with 4xaa i got an average of 114 fps. So whats up with valve games?

I think what might be happening with CSS is just that it's on the newer engine now since the large update. One of the major complaints from that update was the performance hit. With you, especially running at those high settings, 140 fps sounds about right.

Can you notice the difference between 114 and 140 and 300 ? If not then don't worry about it i'd say.

Don't you get like massive image tearing from 300FPS?

Just turn on Vsync and it will determinate perfect frame rate.

Are you playing any of those games offline? I remember TF2 lagging like crazy when I had a go at offline mode.

nope, tf2 even dropped to 30 fps as well -_-. Left 4 dead 2 should be running at over 200 fps, instead it fluctuates from 50-140, which isnt right for my card. Must be the game engines, seeing as i can run batman aa maxed super smooth. Noticed that when i launched left 4 dead 2 it said my gpu wasnt supported. Oh well its fine really, was just wondering :P

If I remember correctly Valve/Source games tend to more CPU limited than GPU limited. So I'd look there first, especially if you say you got the same performance from a 9600gt.

All of them use very different shaders. TF2's are actually quite demanding on the higest graphic settings.

Well, playing your games on 1080p and 8x AA is very demanding for a GTX 460, your graphics card is probably the problem.

Lol are u joking? On an oc'd gtx 460 you think its very demanding? I can run games like dirt 2 maxed with 4xaa and not have the lag i get on tf2 and left 4 dead 2. So i beg to differ

You might need to find another focus than how many hundreds of frames you're not getting.

Again, TF2 and Left 4 Dead 2 run a very newer shader model that is kind of complex. Running 8xAA actually renders each frame fully 8 times before it displays, each frame usually requires 3-4 passes of other effects before it is done, so that's nearly 32 passes for each single frame you see.

The GTX 460 isn't the most powerful card ever. My GTX 470 and i7 + 6 gigs of ram will see dips into the 45s-50s in TF2 running at the same resolution as you.

Just turn the AA down to 4x or 2x AA and you'll be fine. Also make sure that v-sync is off. TF2 and Left 4 Dead turn that on by default.

Also don't be rude to those who are trying to help you, or we won't help you anymore.

I see, i guess i am expecting a lot, but seeing as it cost over £150 i should be. Dont know too much about the shader models, but i could turn down AA, although i am happy with it (avg of 60fps roughly). Sorry if i came across as rude, i was just trying to get my point across. Also, how will my card handle bad company 2 on multiplayer please?
