Even if Mac's game library dramatically increases and even somehow manages to match Windows' one day, it won't change the core reason why gaming on a Mac is a bad idea: the hardware. It's highly overpriced, limited, and doesn't optimize for games as well as Windows. What Apple should do is lower prices on some of the high performance models and allow for more user customization.

That's just how I think anyways. I'm sure plenty of Mac users will be taking advantage of Steam and playing games, but for someone who's been gaming on a PC for a long time, it's just not a very viable option.

That someone wouldn't be the target market. Someone who is seriously into PC gaming won't be on a Mac to begin with. If Apple didn't release a new model every 6 months, gaming on a Mac should from a hardware perspective be fairly similar to gaming on a console. Yes, the components are weaker than what you get if you build your own system, but they are standardized and because of that it's very easy to optimize games for the platform. The problem with this argument is of course that no developer in their right mind develops primarily for Mac. They know as well as we do that someone who wants to use their computer for gaming would not be buying Apple computers, and that a person who buys exclusively Apple systems is extremely unlikely to be into PC gaming.

I don't think they're targeting Mac 'gamers'. I think instead they're just targeting Mac users who might want to play a game or two, for the casual indy developers and PopCap, Steam for Mac will be awesome.

I also have friends who own iMac's and Macbook's and have windows installed on themsolely to play games, my friend loves the idea of not having to reboot into windows to play a game of L4D2 with us.

I use bootcamp to play games on Windows XP (Yeah, I haven't upgraded) on my Macbook Pro. It's good for games. Not perfect though, but the versatility of the platform is pretty cool. I don't mind turning down settings to play a game, so it's fine with me... but I think we all would like Apple to lower the price of these computers. There are very few modern games I really love anymore. I'm pretty much stuck in the recent past in terms of games. One of these days I'd like to buy a top of the line gaming computer which I've never had, and just turn everything on max settings on the latest technology hog. That would be most excellent.

Oh, you mean the Wii crowd? :P I can see why your friend would appreciate it though. Anyone who's been a console gamer for years and has been using Mac for school/work, will probably appreciate having Steam for their computer as well. Though it would be a bit annoying to have to buy a whole new system if only one single component fails to meet system requirements...

Now don't take me as a Mac fan because I do own a PC. But my opinion is that the Mac's, yes they are more expensivebut they are a lot more stable as well.

As far as the fact as games aren't optimized for Mac, well that's true, because the majority of gamers play on PC. If there was a higher percentage of gamers that gamed on a Mac then I bet developers and game designers would increase the amount of work they put into the game for Mac.

Now I own 2 Mac's and build Windows machines for gaming and you can't simply say the hardware doesn't optimize well for OSX as it does for Windows because OSX isn't using DirectX that is a Microsoft only platform instead they use OpenGL which I think personally it scales and performs a lot better then DirectX, but look at the games that are coming out on Steam, most Mac users I know only want to play the Valve titles they could care less about maxing out Crysis but would much rather play Half-Life 2 or Counter-Strike.

Hell I just played Killing Floor on my brothers 24in iMac (2007) with a ATI HD2600 Mobile in it and it maxed it out at the native resolution of machine. I was pretty suprised on how well they got it to play on OSX because I was expecting some chuggness much like Portal was when it launched for OSX.

If anything it is just going to bring more people to playing games, because who doesn't like to play with more people? It is going to get to a point where operating systems are all going to be the same an we won't have this trivial argument about which one is better then the other because the gaming argument on Windows vs OSX is closing the gap if they continue to do what Valve is doing.

It's kind of odd how the only people who have anything against Macs and Mac gaming are people who have PCs. You do realize that it doesn't affect you in any way. As far as gaming goes on the Mac and steams new Mac service, I would say that it is a good business move seeing as I've bought $40 in Mac games in the past month from steam. Also, my next computer won't be a mac as I plan to build my own PC, but I really like OSX compared to Windows, Hence the reason why I went with Mac to begin with.
