so im building a new comp with a 955 black edition, 5770 but the ram is what is kiling me.

4 gb or 8 gb of ram? Cost is my main issue but at the same time I think all gamers will eventually need 6-8 gb no? Ive been reading that we generally wont notice a diff and that 8 gb is only justified if I do video editing, but at the same time games will eventually need no?

Remember when 512 was just enough for halflife? Now 2 gb isnt even enough for me. Should I get 8 or 4 gb for my build? With the release of ddr4 in 2012 im also thinking that if I were to buy 8 gb it would be a sunk cost.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself.

4 Gb is plenty for gaming. and DDR2 is still a viable option for RAM. so why wouldn't DDR3 be when DDR4 is out.

besides, if things even jumped so fast towards 8 Gb, you'd still have the option to add more RAM down the line.

by the time we'll need 8gb of ram, there'll be more and cheaper options. 4gb is the sweet spot for games and apps for the average user.

This. You're going to see a bigger gain in performance with a 460 over a 5770 than with 4 extra gigs of RAM

I'm in the same situation for my build (few months away). When I game like Civ IV already recommends 4 GB of ram, I'd be more willing to go with 8. 6 if I don't care about the dual channel on the AMD boards.

4GB should be enough seeing as most new games only use around 2GB

whenever you need 8 it'll probably be cheaper to aquire

Rule of thumb. Take the amount of ram you have on your video card and multiply that by 4.

Most video cards are 1GB, so you should get 4GB

4gb is good for now.

When you do need it, you can buy the 6 or 8gb, and it will be much cheaper.

4gb is fine for gaming. 8gb is worth looking at if you do a lot of multi-tasking, multimedia creation or use VMs.

^^^ This. go for 6 if your mobo supports tri-channel. If not, stick to 4.

Well i use 4gb of standard ddr2 ram, its work perfectly with games and applications (i dont do video editing though). So really, if you want to save more money, i'd buy ddr2 if i was you. Apparently theres not much difference between ddr2+3 anyway :P

How I chose to do it is I put 4 gb ddr3 and a 6870 in my computer, next summer I'm going to put a second 6870 and 4 more gb's in when I'll have more cash. Tom's Hardware just came out with a review that shows that 8 gb's wont give you much more fps but it does talk about less artifacting and things like that. The better GPU is a better buy though.

edit: I should also mention I use photoshop which is part of my reasoning for 8gb, but would probably upgrade even if I didnt.

Do 6 GB then. I personally like a bit more breathing room than 4GB. When you need it, you really need it.

magicalclick
if you get six on an AMD board, you lose out on the dual channel. I think that's why TC was saying 4 or 8. I'm in the same boat and I'm leaning towards 8. Like I pointed out, Civ 5 recommends 4 already. Next gen games will probably jump to 6.

That could work. If it ends up being decently cheaper than two 4 GB sticks. Which I will check out now..

im just worried games will eventually start utilizing 4. I remember when I bought 2, i thought I Was god and now look :|. Im running it on w7 and starcraft 2 takes ten years to minimize so i quit sc2 until i get a better comp.

8 gb is just so expensive, im in canada btw so :(

Simple answer: Buy as much RAM as you are willing to pay for.

I'm having the same issue especially now that this has dropped by $20 in one day.
Here
I'm tempted to buy now, but it doesn't even seem like it was a holiday deal. Must resist urge & wait til' Cyber Monday...!?

The CAS latency is too high on that to even considering purchasing it as "an upgrade" for anything but an extremely low end system.

I think you're exaggerating a tad too much. However, last time I purchased any memory it was PC2700 and around $100 for 1GB. :?
Planning on going with AMD and most mobo's I've seen support 1333/1600. From benchmarks I've seen there's very little difference between faster timings at 1333 and slower timings at 1600. I really don't see what's so bad about the memory I have in mind. I'd appreciate if you could list some better, affordable alternatives with some benchmarks. :)
