I'm trying to find a good place for my sub. I don't want it just sitting on the floor, and I don't really have any furniture that could hide it. So, I was thinking I could put in my attic. My TV is mounted above the fireplace, and there's a "cavity" on the other side of the wall where a chimney would be... but the fireplace is gas-log so there's no need. Essentially the sub would be in the attic.

Would it be okay for me to put my sub there without any kind of temp damage?

I have a feeling the sound would be horrible as its meant to be in the same room as you.

Its best to sit it near a corner with some space. No way around that really.

My family's is just in the corner. The subwoofer is meant to be on the ground, so i think putting it in the attic would be useless.

Well, I think it just needs to be in the same room. I would put in the corner but, I don't want to look at all the time. I also have an 18 month old daughter who thinks her job is to push every button, and turn every knob in the house;). I was thinking it would be okay in the attic since you can buy "in-wall" speakers. Everyone I've talked to about it says it wouldn't hurt it, but I would lose some of the sound dynamic.

Putting a subwoofer in your attic, while not necessarily ideal, is fine. There are actually a lot of in-wall subwoofer manufacturers from Goldwood to MTX to Boston Acoustics. I've seen numerous custom installations with subwoofers mounted in the floors or wall and ported into the room using a heating vent cover or similar camoflage (http://home.comcast.net/~infinitelybaffled/page2IB-Gallery.html), and it works (though I'd prefer a sealed or bandpass box design to the infinite baffle examples shown). It may not sound as great as a dedicated square box sitting in the corner of your room, and it will most certainly be a pain in the butt to tune, but it will be much better than having no subwoofer at all and it will look much, much nicer (since you won't see it at all).

The more handy you are and willing to research the better it will come out. Personally I'd build an MDF box between two beams and tune it to a 12" sub, using a sub amp from Parts Express. You'll have a bit of a time running the wiring up to the attic, but that's half the fun, right?

Good luck,

Boz

Will it some how be open to the room or are you counting the fireplace as your opening? I think you can get it to work pretty good if the port is open to the room via a hole in the ceiling coupled with speaker fabric or something.

Really? You need to visit the AVS forums, then. They've got forums dedicated just to projects like this: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=3. Custom home audio installation is pretty big business. Do a little Googling for custom home subwoofer installations and you'll get a ton of responses. If you've got some modest woodworking skills and even an inkling of wiring experience, you should be able to build an MDF box and vent it into the room containing your home theater. Just make sure you do a lot of research and hunt around the internet for design ideas. Good luck, Boz
