I am a big RTS gamer, but there are so many games right now. *sigh* I cant really play them all. This makes me make hard decisions when choosing games sometimes. I havent played Supcom, and the expansion pack is out now too. Can Supcom worth being skipped? Or am I missing out on a great experience?

I gots SupCom a few months ago, of all 3 available campaigns ive only beat the first mission for the Cybran Faction, so ithink this is more of a smart patient mans game kinda like chess(complicated) butwith tanks, retards like myself would prefer checkers

There are four things to know before buying SupCom:

1. There's no infantry. At all. If you like to watch men dying, like me, then you will find SupCom bland. Robots in space? Bleh.

2. There's a hell of a lot of building. The expansion looks like it's cutting down on that a lot with templates, but you'll still spend a lot of time building bases.

3. It's an online game. If you skirmish or play campaigns, don't bother with SupCom. The only place to play it is online.

4. It's pretty complicated, as games go - there's a very strong element of unit counters, you have to be able to use the right units in the right terrain, and you need to be able to micromanage a large scale production outfit in an efficient way to be a great player. It's pretty complicted.

If you acknowledge these things, or want them, then you can get a hell of a lot of fun out of Supreme Commander.

Well the graphics look stunning from what I have seen. Gameplay wise I have never played total annilhation growing up. I played the command and conquer series.

Its a pretty sweet game, but its complicated, and youve really got to be on the ball. You need to work out a long list of things to do for the first 10-15 minutes, and keep an eye on what your building/resources at all times. If you want some advice, dont join any games with more than 5 other players, as there are a hell of a lot of players with slow computers and the chances of a lag fest are always pretty high in 'large' games. Try 2v2 to start off with. One map called fields of isis is quite noob friendly, as defending your base is fairly straightforward for the uninitiated.

Well it's an experience different from other commercial RTSs. I guess you wont know what you're missing out on then, which could be good or bad depending how you look at it.

It's not so much a race to build the biggest army in the fastest possible time like many others. People actually use the tech tree to some extent, and with purpose too. The learning curve however is... not great... but that's what makes the time you invest worthwhile.

The demo is actually pretty good. You get a decent amount of the single player from one of the factions, with one skirmish map. More than enough to learn the gameplay mechanics.

The demo is horrible. Please don't bother playing it as it doesn't make up any part of the retail experience. If you like it though.....then you're bound to love supcom retail 10x more than the demo.

If it did, there would be no point buying it. Funny thing about demos.

The first week I played it I was totally addicted, it just plain rocked, I didn't play anything else. It got boring after that however.
I haven't played in 2-3 weeks, but I'm getting ichty again when think back. I'll probably pick it up again once I'm done with the flood of big titles.

I've been wondering the same question. Yesterday I saw SupCom and the expansion both for $30 each, and wondered if I should grab both.

I really enjoyed the demo though. Complex, micromanaging fun.

The expansion is stand alone. Which means you don't need the original SupCom.Just so you know.

And that's kinda the point. For those of us that didn't have time/money to play the original, should we bother going back and buying it first?

Not sure what you mean but I never said that the standalone expansion was a bad thing (price is the same as of a normal expansion anyway), if that is what you were thinking.

Personally, I think that there are other games out now that are a lot more fun then SupCom. So I would get those other games first.

I heard that the original game got optimization improvments in two patches but I am still afraid to buy it retail. Does the expansion bring out even more optimization improvments and if so are those available for the original? On the demo I got around 15fps when beggening a skirmish mach, is a boost to playable levels too much to hope for?

Yes a fully patched Supcom has MANY balance tweaks to the gameplay and improves performance over the demo, plus the interface was slimmed down.

The expansion looks a lot sharper and plays out smoother (as in gameplay). As in performance wise, the new shader engine made my FPS go down some from Supcom, but they optimized the engine so that simulation speed is up, so larger maps with more enemies runs much smoother now.

Supcom is more like chess, get to know the units, planning and management is everything. Games can take up to 2 hours depending on map and playstyle. The game has some pretty good satisfaction to it though if you can be patient with it and have enough time to play it.

All you need to do is simply lower the fidelity settings and the game looks like normal supcom and performance goes up too.

SupCom is good, though I haven't played much of it given my comp will go into death throes from small to medium engagements. But there are many of the elements of Total Annihilation in SupCom, which is very good. And if you ever get a chance to play TA grab it, I feel that it's still one of the best RTS games ever developed.

Does the performance increase only if you buy the expansions (if you already have the patches installed?)
