People are going on and on about how massive the battles are in SC, but does anybody remember cossacks? (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/cossacks2napoleonicwars/review.html?q=cossacks) I remember the population cap was somewhere in the thousands...

Cossacks 2 may have more "units" on screen, but does each individual in a group have its own AI and can be controlled individually?

The sheer number of units is really amazing.  Having a hundred or so ground units is one thing, but when you add in a dozen or two airplanes providing air support and a fleet of battleships supported by antiair gunboats, submarines, and destroyers and you have a whole lot going on across the screen.  Not only that, but you can have multiple battles occuring at the same time depending on the number of opponents you are playing against be it online or skirmish.

I remember cossacks. The unit cap in that game was as many houses as you could build. But cossacks 2 was such a dissapointment... Of course it isn't really fair comparing Cossacks, as sprite based game based in a time when everything wsa either on land or on sea to Supreme commander, as fully 3D game which has land sea and air, coupled with vast, vast maps.

In cossacks you could control single units, however the ai wasnt as good (keeping in mind this game is fairly old compared to Supcom.) It is true that the combat was limited only to ground, but focusing things on pikemen, rifles, cavalry, mercs and deadly artillery was truly awesome.
*edit: the maps were also pretty big, i think max players was either 6 8 or 10 (or somting cant remember) and each player had massive populations, they had to be big maps lolÂ
