I came across this link at a Crysis fan site, I haven't read it yet but it sounds sexy... figured I would go ahead and post it.
Basicly its the Vista killer.

Looks very cool. Let's hope it becomes a reality. This is something I think a LOT of people (including myself) have been hoping for, for a long time. An alternative OS. If for nothing else, just to give us the "choice" of another OS to pick from for the PC for games and mainstream compatibility. :)

If you use your windows'd computer only to play games... you could say you 'almost' have a game console... be real, you don't need windows for anything else than games. ABSOLUTELY ALL of the 'other' stuff, you can do it with other systems.

The number one problem with the PC is the lack of choice on the OS -- the user either gets Windows or something that can't do much. If something like XSOS 3.0 is a reality then I don't see why Vista or any windows product would be bought unless the buyer doesen't know any better or its for a business or for something that requires windows.

-edit-

My bad. I use my computer for games and a few other apps like Photoshop and Firefox. When I say the other OSes can't do much I mean they can't run games very well and games are about all I do.

Yeah there is just no way M$ is helping them create a free OS with DX10 integration. That would be the dumbest business move of all time.

I asked about this in another thread, but this XSOS 3.0 would be great also because there's a rumor going around some tech circles that MS is working on a way to make Vista "pay to play." They are looking into charging a yearly fee to "re-activate" Vista ( haven't heard how much they are thinking of charging ). Apparently, in the EULA for Vista it says you don't "own" it when you buy it rather you are basically "renting" it. If that becomes a reality, oh boy, this XSOS thing if it comes out and runs well would really catch on fire.

That's whatevery EULA says for all OSs, all software, all games. When you buy any software you are buying the right to use it, you are not buying the software. If you owned the software you would be within your rights to copy it, resell it, etc. EULA's create a model where software companies can make money on their intellectual property.

Microsoft does plenty of nasty, predatory things. But EULA's are standard operating procedure.

look, a computer isn't a coffee making machine. you do have a choice of downloading a linux distro and replacing your stupid windows with that. You can listen to mp3, surf the web, post in this forum (using firefox), watch dvds, code your own website, post podcasts and videos on youtube, write a book, print stuff, edit digital photos, whatever else but playing "windows-only" games. period. That's your choice. You really wanna choose? get a ps3 (sony, right? not MS...), and a comp with linux as the OS. 'nuff said.

--edit--
duh!!!
sorry, sorry.. my bad.. I DO remember this is the "PC Games" section...
you could still play games with linux, if you use emulators, or other indie games that have linux support..
there.

Well I think MS realizes that no one will really use this os save the very small community of gamers and bencher's. The fact is its not going to support EVERY app windows does, most people will still buy or pirate vista, thats a fact. And those who wont you can count on your fingers. At the same time they do get publicity in a way. They also made sure they aren't going to "loose" money on this as its prohibited to be sold for profit, and it is closed source. Maybe thats their way of covering their rear as far as DX10 goes. It probably wont even scratch 0.0000001% of their market. Lets be realistic, I hardly see XSOS on computers at your work, the library, in the homes of millions of computer illiterate Americans etc etc. Its definitely not going to "hurt" MS. What I cant figure out is what is in this for them. Maybe they hope if it ever starts getting popular they can sue or buy it out and make it not free anymore. Its a well known strategy, make it free, get people to like it, then start charging for it. I don't know. Definitely food for thought.

This is true. But I don't find LInux/other does this any better than Windows. Its more of a novelty of getting away from MS. Or just doing somthing different, which isn't a bad thing.

The sucess of this project depents on how mutch will MS help them if they have given them too early to tell either way

oh and in some post it was claimend that MS had given them premission to use some of their code so they will not probally have any Copywrite problems

If this is true, I'll definitely make a dual-boot system. I'd like to get as much usage out of my DX10 card. But this still doesn't make sense. They haven't even picked out a design or layout. It seems really undone and they're BSing a few things for hype.

ok guys.. let's see. What would WE lose if it comes? Nothing. The only thing that it brings better than vista is, that it isn't so much RAM eating. So you don't need 2 GIGS of it to even just start to run a game, it would be enough to have 1 GIG on this comparing to 2 GIGS on vista. IF it comes, (im sayin IF) it's not obligated to download, it even doesn't guarantee you that games should work on it, it would just save a very small community who like to play sum better games. What do you think. We have absolutely nothing to lose.

The Linux and Mac OS X os's are perfectly capable systems for the programming of games. The problem is one of install base. If nobody adopts the system then no one will program games for it, thereby keeping the install base low, thereby keeping people from programming games for it :)

Too bad Loki games was mismanaged and the owners embezzled all that money. It could have been the company that made Linux a popular game platform....

Dear God I hope this is true...I have no beef with Microsoft, but damn it would be nice to have a practical choice of OS (sorry, Linux isnt very practical...and Macs, well....theyre Macs) instead of just doing Windows!

And its free!

Given everything I know about Microsoft, even if this new OS DOES come out, and IS compatible with enough for people to want it, and becomes a practical alternative to Windows, and catches on, even if only to the degree of the numbers of Mac users there are, MS will buy it ( they DO have enough money to make "an offer you can't refuse" ) they'll mess with it, and they'll charge mucho for it. (Whew! Please excuse the run on sentence.) :?

That may sound pessimistic, but that's how I would guess the best case scenario would go. :P I hope I'm wrong if this OS actually comes to be (just about the MS buying it part I mean.) :)

This is really getting silly. If this project was logit there would be some major fanfare involved. To get a DRM free DX10 Vista ONE HUNDRED PERCENT COMPATIBLE Free OS would be a huge HUGE......did I say huge? DEAL. So the fact that this is not being shouted from every PC news website makes me just giggle inside. Its very similiar to when you get the email saying you won the British lotery. Just fill out this form and gives all you personal info and your big paycheck will arrive by mail soon....honest.

What a pipe dream.

You guys are morons.

You still need to buy a Vista license for this. Do you actually believe microsoft will give some garage kid a full source code?50 million lines of code? Do you actually believe this???? ...XSOS 2.0 was a Me version that was so watered all it did was disable services and had huge security flaws. This is nothing but a crappy version of Vista with loopholes. If you want a stable and scalable OS just buy Vista and avoid Xsos3.0 as much as possible.

It's the invisable microsoft hand that changes the public attention so they can further monopolize.

I laugh at vista.  Build 2000% bigger then it should have been.  For what reason?  Intel, western digital, ect ect.

Vista is cracked and always will be.  The beta was cracked even before it was publically released.  I'll never pay for software from a company that steals to profit.

or else it doesn't violate the patents but doesn't actually work and has no compatibility with games/DX10 whatsoever. if anyone here is so excited about this OS, i advise them to back up their files before installing it.
