[QUOTE="wis3boi"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"] What's the insult? That I play solo or that the story is entertaining? Why can't an MMO have an entertaining story and also accessible to be played solo?QQabitmoar

Didn't ya hear? MMOs have to have text boxes and random useless grind quests like "collect 30 lizard scales because I said so" and they need to revolve around TEH STATZ  We don't want character devlopment or story in our stinkin' rpgs, amiright?

Because the idea that they can revolve around PLAYER INTERACTION, guild based-warfare, community politics and metagame, and generally really trying to be MASSIVE multiplayer online games, with usual RPG stuff like stats etc., instead of a single player game with a dungeon finding mechanic (instanced of course...) and battlegrounds, never really crossed your mind, amirite?

Lemme guess, you've only ever played WoW and ToR as fas as MMORPGS go?

...

ouch....

Actually I played EQ, EQ2, SWG, and such...no, you had to jump conclusions and argue about a game you havent played. Might want to research about the game you are discussing. SWTOR is big, open, has loads of stats and players and guess what...no dungeon finder....Derp. Nice backfire, sir.

Why should I know something about a game I never had interest in playing anyway? Thought it was a standard in theme-park MMOs...guess not. Anyway, I was insulting ur little 'theory', that every MMO should be a guided experience. Also, did you just use the word freedom...when talking about a THEME-PARK MMORPG?

Anyway, if something is going to kill this game, that's Bioware's own attitude. I've seen screenshots of people being banned for...farming.

Yes. Farming. As in, trying to be good at the game.

END OF RINE.

Wis3boi, SWTOR is not open, it is extremely linear for mmo standards. Nor are there a lot of relevant stats for each character. I felt SWTOR was extremely streamlined, especially when it comes to character builds and stats.

Did anyone here see the comic using scenes from Star Wars Episode 3 to describe the situation with SWTOR? The one comparing Bioware to Anakin, Palpatine to EA, Padme to the TOR player base that are leaving in droves and Obi Wan to well... something that shall not be named.

It is funny because it is true. I would link it, but I dont feel I should.

Open beta happened before it went live, they gave keys in the millions.

Yea... I wasn't one of them. My fault though, I had minimal interest and didn't really watch out for opportunities to get them. Well... my interest is still somewhat minimal (and isn't worth me shelling out ~$70) but way more than when it was at beta. Oh well, I'm sure they'll have may be a 15 day trial like with WoW some day.

I'm not gonna go into SWTOR debate anymore. I like the game and it's fun for me, I understand it's not for everybody. Was I expecting something more.... YES, in some parts I was but in other parts I knew what was coming. Like I said numerous times before, TIME will tell how this MMO goes. Numbers going up and down in one month is stupid to analyze. Let's wait 6-12 months and see where it's at. I personally want it to succeed cause it's the only SciFi MMO worth playing, I don't want to go back to yet another fantasy game.

I knew someone was gonna say EvE, I even considered putting it on my post. Basically EvE is mostly a hardcore space simulator. SWTOR is a normal "typical" MMO. Of course EvE is worth playing too....but anyone can see they are completely different products.

if you arent playing with friends or going and makignf riends with guilds and groups, then i can understand why you'd be bored.

FelipeInside

Very true, but I play solo most of the time and the story keeps me entertained too.

i think the problem with that attitude is it runs out. its questionable how content rich the end game is, if it was all about the story then why pay montly for it :/

Well there's the thing of course and why we have to wait and see how SWTOR pans out. As it stands, I have bough a month and have ranked up nearly 100 hours on it. The gameplay is fun, the story is good imo and the characters are more alive than any other MMOs (mostly due to the fact they are voiced but other factors as well). Now, as for the monthly thing. Take it like a comic book series. Every month a new comic comes out and moves the story forward.

every class's story is different and takes about 100+ hours to see it all, across 8 characters, plus content being added regularly makes it a pretty lengthy game. Not to mention flashpoints and raids all have storyline and dialogue choices with varying content depending on what people pick for dialogue

More like repetitiveness. "Oh, another 1hr long heroic for 2% progress on ____ rep"

or "Oh, another 5hrs of arena with such a gimped compisition"

There are far better games to spend time on.

The thing is that MMOs like WoW work because of addictive gameplay rather than fun gameplay. That's why you get that empty feeling after grinding out for years and realizing you didn't accomplish anything. I read an article somewhere, might have been Game Informer? I dunno. But there was this doctor talking about how WoW utilizes the same addictive personality hooks as casinos.

Oh, c'mon, don't do that!

As somebody who doesn't have any fat in the fire (I don't think the game is great or terrible - it's just sort of remarkably average) I am finding these ToR debates endlessly amusing. It's kind of like watching people argue over their favorite flavor of vanilla and, for whatever reason, I can't seem to look away.

Well yes, that's the whole premise of any MMO. Keep playing to get better gear, new levels, story pushes forward etc etc etc. If you stop having fun with an MMO and keep playing, that's YOUR problem, not the MMOs.... Last MMO (before SWTOR) I played was LOTRO. It was great and fun. But, after a year the fun started to wear off, so easy...I just stopped playing. ANY game that stops being fun for me I stop playing, and then come back to it weeks or months later.

Got up to 33. After that, I couldnt even force myself to continue. The planets got more open, but it mattered little, because the gameplay was experience was equally linear.

You know how in WoW you can choose between questing in 2-3 zones based on your level? In SWTOR you only have one choice.

I just cancelled my subscription a day after hitting 50, honestly if your not in a tight guild you will likely struggle. I went to do a level 50 FP and the people left as soon as a I joined due to me new 50 gear I think, went into PVP and got mauled by people with over a 4k health advantage over me, went to Illum to do the dailys and one of the quests bugged out on me not to mention the quests feel very grindy. People are already demanding good gear to join groups, its a total joke, anyway I am going back to Skyrim or something, I may play in the futrue but I dunno if I can be bother as the end game really feels like a mssive grind for gear, even worse than WoW, hell in WoW is was sorta fun but this doesnt. Not to mention people are already asking for server merges, thats not a good sign...

Oh and it also feels like a single player game when your playing, they lead you on a very tight path to level 50, its not like in WoW where you are sorta open to move around zones, its either quest here or your screwed, plus I saw literally a hand full of the opposing faction levelling to 50 and that is on a high level PVP server :S

This is why I always for MMOs to be polished up. I greatly appreciate the people that get it at launch and play in the early years so that I can come later and enjoy a solid game. I didn't buy WoW until the box price was $20 and the major bugs were fixed. I will most likely to do same thing for SWTOR as long as it exists that long. I don't see it dying anytime soon. They should be able to maintain 1 million subscribers for a while.

[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"][QUOTE="DanielDust"] Mindblowing @_@ to even consider for a moment the possibility of raiding "solo" in a MMO, I would expect nothing less from a raid, to force you to play with a group of human players.

Why would anyone ever bring raids into such a discussion...something's definitely not right with the "solo" aspect of it.

DanielDust

Now your're just simply baiting people into a dumb discussion.

I'm not bating anyone, but I can't help to notice that besides enjoying the story and voices, people seem to defend what everyone is saying allover the internet with mindblowingly dumb arguments.

I'm interested in getting the game, but I'm extremely cautious since it bombed hard and the first month barely passed and don't try to deny that pure and simple fact.

Look, there are about as many people in leveling zones as WoW ever was (on populated servers) there are alot more group areas while leveling, there are pleanty of isntances. yes the world is more boxed, but it plays pretty much exactly like WoW in multiplayer sense. Whatever silly haters have given you the opinion that it feels like a single player game are people that forget you do 1 to 85 on wow ALONE..... only with alot less emmersive content or story to interest you on that path. Though wow now has alot more exciting quests.

In a word YES, the voice acting gets old quick then it is space bar tru the acting and to the reg grind, has less quest variaty then wow or dcuo only mmos I have played. Shame game starts out great till you see it for what it is a unfinished, rushed, wow clone. Cant wait for a decent mmo, maybe the genre needs to die

MMO's. Time consuming? Oh, the irony, man. :PElann2008

SWTOR: Sit down, immediately recognize the hotkeys and shortcuts and controls, what to do.

EVE: Spend a month learning to take a left turn :P

Well I can say that while the levelling is a bit more fun than WoWs in terms of lead ups to the quest with the awesome dialogue. However its easily been some of the most linear quests I have ever played, all the quests all the way to 50 are pretty much identical, at least with WoW they offer some cool quests along the way that are fun. SWTOR isnt a bad MMO its just that it doesnt feel like an MMO really, feels like a single player game with some group integration, sure it would be better if I had a guild but I dont really want to sink that heavy time into it any more, with this game you either play a lot in raids or grind Warzones or else you wont really get that far gear wise.

MMOs will never be perfect. Human nature prevents that. You will get bored eventually.

This. Sometimes, even an entire genre.

Also another bonus to SWTOR: you arent stuck fighting one or two enemies. I just did a class quest to hold a frontline against an assault and was attacked by about 15 enemies at once. Good luck with that in most other MMOs. Not to mention instance mobs arent all basically minibosses, you can solo the "trash mobs", it's the bosses that are the real challenge

wis3boi

It's funny you say that wis3boi because you don't even play the game anymore yourself, because you said the game was boring in your blog post. Hypocritical much? Anyways I have been playing SWTOR for 3 months and I played through the entire thing. I've done raids and everything. So I think I have a pretty good grasp of what I'm talking about here. -Firstly the game is a WoW clone, bottom line. If you honestly cannot tell the difference between a clone and something that isnt ripped off then you either are a Bioware fanboi, or have never played WoW, either that or you need glasses. -secondly the things good about this game are the story, but everything else is the same **** that we have been doing for the last 8 years in other games. The PvP is horrible because its all Instanced PVP. You can do world pvp but you dont get anything for it. not as much as doing instanced pvp -thirdy this is one of the easiest MMO's I have ever played. Right along with How easy wow is now. It's like they made this game for kids who couldnt even do 8th grade algerbra. The raids and operations are all tank and spank. It's the most boring and mundane **** I have played since wrath of the noob king. -and lastly the servers... ok there is 100 servers and most of them are all light now. There is only 4 populated servers. It wont be long before they have to merge servers. if this dosnt tell you that people are leaving the game. Then I tell you to go look at the servers for yourself. The Fat Man, and ajunta Pal are only the 2 main populated servers all the rest are light, or standard After 3 months of wasting my time with this game. Ill say this SWTOR was a complete waste of my time. I wish I never played it. I played the game for 3 months because i wanted to have a good idea what the mechanics of the game were and what the game had to offer. I can firmly make a judgment that this game should of been a single player game. Not a MMO. Whoever decided to have that space combat in the game should go back to grade school and learn how to make a MMO. Bioware as a whole is discusting to me now. They made some great games with real quality, but after dragon age 2 and now this hunk of **** I wont be buying another bioware game again. Company has gone to ****

Wow Midnight, why did you even try out ToR? It was made crystal clear from the last few months pre-release that the game will be very similar to WoW and won't appeal to people who don't like WoW. It's like me trying out a game I hate like Street Fighter (I don't hate it) and then proceeding to try a similar game such as Guilty Gear. Or hating MW then trying out Homefront.

Why don't you stick to less traditional MMO's instead of trying formulas you know you're not going to like?

It's just another Theme-Park MMO. I've never played WoW so I can't cal it that but I made it to 35 on one character and 30 on there other and had to stop. Just couldn't bring myself to login anymore because I was just tired of playing the game. Just didn't do it for me, I think playing 8 years worth of Galaxies I had hopes they wouldn't make it like everything else that is out there but I was sorely disappointed after awhile.

I have a level 33 Commando and a 36 Gunslinger. Its still interesting..

I'm leveling the Commando solo and my Gunslinger with friends. I do suspect I'll hit level 50 and get bored for a bit but I'm still really content leveling alts for now. Chapter 1 ended nicely for both of the classes I'm playing now and I'm content with the story so far. No point in rushing to end game while most of the game is still leveling.
