Another WoW killer bites the dust.

Haha, no. WoW is though, if anything.
Whatever makes you feel better though. :)
Yep, WoW has more subscribers than ever, but whatever makes you feel better. Sensationalism pft...This topic is locked from further discussion.

Yep, WoW has more subscribers than ever, but whatever makes you feel better. Sensationalism pft...There was a Gamespot article that stated Bioware needing 500,000 minimum to be profitable. Unless this is something else?
I unsubbed, and the servers are dropping quite heavily in numbers, I am seeing less people on my server. End game is just far to grindy. How many people does it have now? I saw some sales chart with very declining sales numers, and there are also tons of people saying they would unsubscribe, etc etc. Also, all the negativity it was getting, overexaggerated or not, hillarious or not, it did it's part.
Anyway, do we have any numbers on the active subs now?

what if EA shuts Old Republic down in less then a year? What kind of message would that send to everyone else in trying to get into MMO games?Jd1680a
That dephends on the dev
Some might be discouraged from making mmos.
Others, will be discouraged from making WoW clones and will instead focus on making innovative mmos. And bring a fresh breath to the themepark mmo genre.
In any case, I hope SWTOR does not close down, would be sad that so many people lost their jobs.
[QUOTE="captalchol"]A month or 2 after release before everyone's free month is up and they're only at 2 million subs this game is in trouble already. Glad to stay away from the hype.wis3boi"only at" 2 million  If they need 800k to stay in the black and its one month after release I think they are in a bit of trouble...
And keep in mind they still have to make up losses for the huge amount of money EA hurled at its development, license and marketing.skrat_01
Yeah, its one million to keep the game running, its going to take a lot more tomake up fortheir sunk costs.
[QUOTE="Mazoch"]I believe that the actual situation is that: - No one outside EA/BioWare knows how many copies have been sold. - No one outside EA/BioWare knows how many people converted to subscribers after the first month. - No one outside EA/BioWare knows how many subscribers they need to break even. - No one outside EA/BioWare knows how many subscribers for how long, to break even with the development costs. FelipeInsideReally? Do you think their servers don't show active subscribers? Do you think they don't do market studies before and after? Even then, EA/BioWare wouldn't be so quick to denounce true subscriber numbers. If it ever so bit declined in subs, EA would be dumb to put that in the papers.

I'm not sure I understand your point. I'm sure that EA knows the number of subscribers, the number of active players and I'm sure they've done plenty of market studies. My point is that WE don't have access to that information.
There's so many numbers being thrown around, but at the end of the day they are all really just random guesses without factual data from EA/BioWare.
Some interesting notes on the article it self

Still baffled by the $200 million dollar cost and yet they still cut corners on the engine. As evidenced by the http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=233714
when wow was released it used 150 million in development costs if you remember wow was completely broken at release. i have a 50 bounty hunter on a high population pvp server where on empire fleet during primetime there is usually at least 2 shards of 350 people online not to mention all the planets with multiple shards. usually ilum has 3 shards fighting during primetimes also. so yeah, the game sure is dying on my server. there are bugs, yes, but its nothing compared to some single player games ive played at launch. i am also having a blast with it, and the community is nowhere near as bad as wows.[QUOTE="Jabby250"][QUOTE="tjricardo089"]

Yep, WoW has more subscribers than ever, but whatever makes you feel better. Sensationalism pft...WoW's numbers have been declining. I don't really believe WoW's dying, but that it's going to get a bit more competition in the future with the release of other MMOs. More than it did previously, at least.
[QUOTE="CaptainAhab13"]Still laughing at everyone who said that it would be the actual WoW killer, "once and for all!" :lol:wis3boiAnyone who thought that was delusional. Anything Blizzard makes sells like hotcakes, regardless of what it is, especially in the Asian market Agreed. SWTOR is awesome and is doing good imo but anyone who thought it would destroy WoW is delusional. I don't think any MMO coming out will ever "kill" WoW unless blizzard stops supporting it honestly.

this was posted in january of 2012The article is gone...was it legit?
I find it hard to believe that they kept the game up and running for over a year as a lose.
