Greetings fellow Gamespotters:

My wife is looking for a Tablet to stream NBC and FOX shows, email, and listen to NPR podcasts while she's cooking. Laptops and Netbooks seem a bit much when she just wants something to mount in the kitchen. She does not need GPS or camera functionality. She would like to be able to check the weather and perform similar minor tasks.

Bonus points if you get the picture reference.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,

Boz

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

Acer Iconia Tab

Both are <300 USD and run recent version of Android.

If you're on a tight budget probably the Kindle Fire, if not iPad 2/3 (depending on budget and whether she feels the retina display is worth it). The Transformer line is nice, but not cheap enough to make up for Android's weak tablet app offerings relative to the iPad.

The big thing is that it needs to stream video. Will the Kindle Fire handle, for example, Netflix streaming? Thank you, Boz

Yeah, that's exactly what the Fire is designed for -- media consumption. Netflix, Hulu, obviously Kindle and Amazon Instant, etc.

Based on the functionality she's asking for, any sort of Apple device would be overkill but (granted) the easiest to work with. It's hard to beat the Kindle Fire's pricepoint and it's designed for exactly what she's asking for. However, I dunno to what extent it streams or at what quality (my sister owns a Fire but I've never spent more than 10 minutes with one). I assume it will stream just fine, but personally I've always been more keen on the unmodded Droid tablets. I can't recall how much more expensive each of the mainstream droid tablets are in comparison to the Fire but if you're willing to settle on a lesser known manufacturer/brand, I've seen Engadget report on full Honeycomb tablets selling around $200-$250.

Is she getting that NPR podcast from their website, iTunes, or something else?

If she's used to getting it from iTunes, then that might be enough to go with an iPad. If that's the case, get a used or refurbished iPad 2 from Amazon or apple.com or get new for $400. Another reason to go with an iPad is for resale value. You can get on a yearly upgrade on ipads for a net loss of about $120ish per year or about $200 every 2 years.

It might seem silly to base the decison on something like that, but if she's already in the iTunes universe, iPad 2 is probably the best way to go.

Otherwise, the Kindle Fire will do everything you just suggested, though resale won't likely be good and it will start showing its age quicker.

galaxy tab is a good one, gotta love ICS 4.0. Avoid apple its out of your budget and a useless boring product. I would know, my bro has the latest ipad and it can't even run torrents.

She streams the podcast from the NPR website, and NBC and FOX shows from their respective sites. We do not use iTunes today, and I'd prefer it to stay that way, but I'm not completely against it if an iPad is the best value. It sounds, however, like a Kindle Fire might make sense. Any additional input is welcome. The Tablet universe is quite overwhelming. Boz

Kindle fire = 200 bucks. Samsung galaxy tab 2 seven inches = 250 bucks with ics. Its just amazing. But the screen is a bit washed out,. Just check out some reviews of that thing.
