What are you talking about.... there are hundreds of maps on tf2, some HUGE, some small, some medium. Join a few more differnt servers and play for more then 20-30mins.There is actually quite the variety in map sizes imo, and i dont find the gameplay to be run and gun at all, its more teamwork/****oriented.
The maps are obviously made for the console people. The open space map you speak of are very unpopular, so not really an argument.
