My friend notified me (who is going NUTS over Call of Duty 4 and thinks it's going to be the best thing since sliced bread), that in his Game Informer issue (latest) it mentions their opinion that Infinity Ward is the best developer of war games. Did they think about Epic Games? The ones who brought us the Unreal Tournament series, not to mention Gears of War? I think not. Not to mention that their games' ratings are much higher than that of Call of Duty.

Plus, I don't think when they reviewed/previewed Call of Duty 4, that they saw this trailer here. Beautiful! I'm not an Unreal Tournament fanboy though. In fact, I think I suck at it. But I still have a really fun time whenever I play. The fast paced chaotic bloodshed brings me back every time.

How do you think Call of Duty 4 will compare to Unreal Tournament 3? And don't give me that "omg they're two different games" crap. They're both going to be ****fied as first person shooters. Opinions, views...

Well..considering that in PCgaming the term "wargame" doesn't mean military FPS, but tactics-focused strategy game ...well if GI can't even get that right, why should we care about what they think? :)

You're right. The large range of weaponry, vehicles, explosions and all of the above clearly make it a football game.

lol ya I was like Epic...makes war games?  Hardly.

War games are tactical RTS and TBS games, plain and simple.

ummm First Person Shooter.

Call of Duty series would be an example of a military-/war-themed first person shooters

An example of a wargame imo would be Ground Control, Force 21, Combat Mission series, Sudden Strike series, etc

Just because Call of Duty is a game dealing with war doesnt make it a part of the Wargame sub-genre.  It is still a first-person shooter in every way.

And Gears of War is a third-person shooter.

Sorry I dont mean to sound like a smartass but I thought this was common knowledge, thats all.

Although I dont really like Wikipedia, especially during debates since it is not a peer-reviewed source, they have a pretty nice summary of what a wargame is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wargame

Also, here is a summary of what a first-person shooter is.  Note that Call of Duty is uncluded in their list of popular examples of FPSs:

But it was mentioned before that wargames are more tactical and ... more military-like. Slower paced. Meaning Gears of War could fit in with that.

Sorry homez but Gears of War is in no way slow paced.  Its problably one of the most intense third-person shooters I've ever played.  And sure, controlling teammates may be a little "tactical" but no where near the scope as found in a true wargame.

Lol dude, it may be intense, but it's not fast paced at all. I felt it was very very slow paced. I mean hell I was watching a UT3 preview and straight from one of the developers of Epic Games, he said that in Unreal Tournament you're always going 40 mph, and in Gears of War it feels like you're going only 4 mph. Gears of War was very, very slow paced for me...but I think it still rocked and I enjoyed it a lot. I just dont' have an xbox 360 (go figure).

Ya thats true, I didnt really think about that.  In Gears youre always methodically pacing yourself from one point to another, and there is always that quiet buildup to the next part.  Sometimes you dont even see a bad guy for a few minutes.

Well regardless, they're all about war, so therefore they are indeed war games. Maybe less tactical (heh, but I bet Gears could be very tactical) but they're war games.

And you're about to tell me CoD is tactical? It's mindless run and gun. I've been playing the series ever since it came out with my bud, and it's all run and gun, mindless spray and pray. See, you can't spray/pray in Unreal Tournament. That's the thing I like. It's run and gun, but it takes a lot of skill to play.

I still do not see UT as a war game.  It is a combat game sure but it is treated as a sport in the series.  Tactics don't make a war game a 'war' game.  It is the setting and what is occuring in the background of the game and the story.

Do you know what a war game is? UT is an action FPS and nothing else. Just because a game gives you a gun and has explosions doesn't make it a war game in the slightest sense. I guess fallout, counter strike, half life, and FEAR should be considered "war games" since they give you an arsenal of weapons and contain explosions right? Hell even the tomb raider series should fall under that category since it too contains explosions as well as guns.

Call of duty, medal of honor, battlefield 2, and killzone would be closer to be considered war games.

A game like COH would be considered a real war game.

I thought wargames were games that were based on real life wars. For example: WW2, Vietnam, Desert Storm, some fictional modern war. But I don't think you can call "wargame" to be a genre in video games because "wargames" always fit in a "real" video games genre. They can be turned based strategy games, RTS games, FPS games, etc.

But to be honest, I don't think anybody knows what the hell a wargame exactly is. There are also wargames that have nothing to do with video games but those are a totally different story.

I love UT, but it's a Sci-fi game, not a modern game. I would have to say also, being that I'm such a UT fan, I'm also in love with COD as well, and I'm itching more for COD 4 than anything else. I think it's because I'm really eager for a single player game.

That being said, I can't wait to hold both UT3 and COD4 in my hands later this year!

Ye, I would agree that Creative Assembly is a very decent developer. However, I put FPS in brackets to show I was talking about First Person Shooters at the time.
If we're talking about all genres, I'd still choose IW and Relic (for good ol' Company of Heroes and Dawn of War + Expansions).
I have nothing against CA, though.

Well technically, Unreal Tournament 3 is going to be a war (storyline wise), not so much a "tournament" like before. If you watch the trailer you may see what I'm talking about. It may be a fragfest to you guys, but it will technically be about war.

The term "wargame" makes me think of hexes either in turn-based strategy games or table top gaming.  I'd never classify like COD or UT or anything like that as a wargame.

i agree that i wouldn't think of CoD as a 'wargame.' trying to tag it as a wargame because it involves war/battle is too broad of a term, first off. a large percentage of the non-sports games out there involve war/conflict in a large way or as a focus of the gameplay, especially fps/strategy because they pretty much are forced to. it, right off the bat, includes sims like flight & naval simulators (Freespace 2, IL-2 Sturmovik, Jane's Longbow, M1A1 Abrams, Silent Hunter).. turn-based strategy games (Heroes of Might and Magic, Steel Panthers, Cossacks, Panzer Generals, Civilization), RTS games (Company of Heroes, C&C, Warcraft, Homeworld, Black & White 2), other in-between strategy games (Shogun: Total War, Combat Mission, Battlezone, Full Spectrum Warrior), turn-based strategy RPGs (Jagged Alliance, Silent Storm), third-person shooters (Freedom Fighters, Gears of War), isometric/other shooters (Alien Swarm, Crusader: No Remorse), and first-person shooters (Gods and Generals!.. yeah). using that terminology, you're able to ****fy Starsiege: Tribes, Silent Storm, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Jane's F-15, Alien Swarm, Silent Hunter III, Axis & Allies, Wing Commander II, Halo, and Vietcong (and, yes, Gods and Generals) as all the same kind of game. they're wildly different, and generally have almost nothing in common, aside from being 110% about war + fighting. secondly, whether or not you agree with the first point, tabletop wargames were there first. :) they got dibs on the name, so only fairly similar things like Steel Panthers and Panzer Generals get to borrow the moniker.

That's all I was trying to say.  Whether it's as tactical or less tactical as you think it is, it's still about war therefore it's a war game.

gotcha. i was trying to say it's an incredibly bad moniker, however accurate it might be. it's kinda like referring to computer parts - instead of video cards, memory, motherboards, sound cards - as green boards or black boards. or red boards. or gold boards. or blue boards. or maybe even orange boards. (and yeah, motherboards + RAM + graphics cards have all come in all of those colors) it's accurate, yeah, but it doesn't tell you anything useful (IMO!). and when you start referring to things as 'white boards' or 'black boards,' you'll start to confuse other people that already known those as something completely different because the terms have already meant something else.

I would like to add Operation Flashpoint and ArmA to the, "Wargames," list.  I don't consider UT a wargame.  It's more of an arcade style shooter IMO.

Well whether you think UT is a war game or not, it is. It's about war. Any game that's about war is technically, logically, a war game.

WTF are you talking about? UT is a damn tournament not a war. The game is far, far away to even being considered a war game.

Since this topic is about "game informer's" opinion, which names Infinity Ward, it's pretty obvious they were talking about War[space]Games, as in, "games about wars," so linking sources defining the term "wargame" and providing examples such as Corsun Pocket or whatever is trying to argue about something entirely different. Of course, what Game Informer says sounds pretty dumb, because they make it seem like only FPSs can be war games (unless our original poster forgot to mention them naming IW as the best developer of FPS war games), which is certainly not the case.

So, as far as FPSs go, UT is probably a bad example of a war game, simply because it's based on a "tournament" rather than a war. Unreal, on the other hand, is a closer fit. My own opinion is that Dice makes (or have been making) the best war multiplayer FPSs, but in terms of complete experience FPS (read: SP and MP) I would have to agree with the goofy mag. However, THE best developer of war games period is probably [oh no he didn't!] Blizzard. ;O
