Since this topic is about "game informer's" opinion, which names Infinity Ward, it's pretty obvious they were talking about War[space]Games, as in, "games about wars," so linking sources defining the term "wargame" and providing examples such as Corsun Pocket or whatever is trying to argue about something entirely different. Of course, what Game Informer says sounds pretty dumb, because they make it seem like only FPSs can be war games (unless our original poster forgot to mention them naming IW as the best developer of FPS war games), which is certainly not the case.

So, as far as FPSs go, UT is probably a bad example of a war game, simply because it's based on a "tournament" rather than a war. Unreal, on the other hand, is a closer fit. My own opinion is that Dice makes (or have been making) the best war multiplayer FPSs, but in terms of complete experience FPS (read: SP and MP) I would have to agree with the goofy mag. However, THE best developer of war games period is probably [oh no he didn't!] Blizzard. ;O

Nope, I've had enough of Blizzard's crap with RTS. They limit themselves to ONLY RTS games. If they want to prove themselves as makers of good war games, lengthen their variety to FPS games, at least. I was not at all satisfied with any of Blizzard's titles other than World of Warcraft, but only for about a year.

Biatch. Starsiege: Tribes > CoD anything. Seriously. :P

Although, CoD 4 seems like it's trying to catch up to the BF series...so I'm not sure I can just hand the crown to Infinity Ward yet.

UT3 will crunch CoD 4 however.

Well, I don't think they "want to prove" anything of the sort, but the fact of the matter is, when I thought about it, I realized that my two favorite games based on wars were both made by Blizzard, which is why I said what I said. Opinions vary, of course.

[QUOTE="Skullheart"]Well whether you think UT is a war game or not, it is. It's about war. Any game that's about war is technically, logically, a war game.Skullheart

WTF are you talking about? UT is a damn tournament not a war. The game is far, far away to even being considered a war game.

It's about war, genius. GO SEE THE UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3 TRAILER.

yes, the new UT3 is, but the rest aren't. They were simply annual tournamnets. Now since this article is clearly about devs that have already released their war games UT still wouldn't fall into that category since UT3 is months from coming out, genius.

Listen, I dont care how you put it but Unreal Tournement, Call of Duty, etc are not wargames.  They are a sub-genre called "first person shooters", in the genre action.

A wargame is a sub-genre of the genre strategy.  More often than not they are turn-based games and you have a set limit to the amount of units you bring to a battle, but the games can also be more strategic (i.e. invading countries and using diplomacy, etc).

If you want to say that Call of Duty is a war-themed game, fine...but dont call it a wargame.  Its extremely misleading.  And I dont want to sound like a jerk or anything, but this is just one those topics where there shouldnt be a debate.  I'd be willing to bet that anyone who says UT or CoD are wargames is problably under the age of 20 and never experienced the completely different genre of the true war game.  Games such as Combat Mission and Close Combat, for example, are wargames.

Sorry I know it seems like I am splitting hairs here but its just one of those things that needs to be clarified.  You cant call every single game that deals with a historic non-fictional war or a futiristic sci-fi struggle a wargame, because then everything would be called a wargame.

Calling CoD or UT a wargame is like seeing a corvette and calling it a porsche.
"Oooooh nice porsche!"
"Dude, thats a corvette...completely different vehicles"
"So?  They both go fast and theyre both sports cars"
"What?  Ahh nevermind..."

So go look at game play trailers. It's going to be a good war game, period.

Actually I like how you posted this. It's a war-themed game. So I guess that works.

Again, we're talking about game informer and their writing in this thread. To be fair, though, they never called (nor do we) CoD a WARGAME, which is a term and a subgenre you're referring to in your post. They called it a WAR GAME, with a space in between, which simply describes it as a game based on war, or as you put it, a war-themed game. The hairs have already been split.
