Hey, I would like to know what does the GS community think is the best PC FPS game ever?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
HL2 plus Episodes. Look at them all together!!
Followed closely by Thief 1-3 thee best stealth games out there on any platform.
I don't know what I would consider the best ever as there are a lot of great FPS's I haven't played yet. But the best out of the ones I've played to date is easily Crysis, followed by HL2, followed by NOLF, followed by JK2, followed by Jedi Academy.JP_Russell
You might as well look at the two jedi knight games together. It was silly that Academy was labelled as Number 3 when it was like an expansion pack with no graphical updates and only a few new moves.
fatshodan says SS2 but that isn't exactly the best "first person shooter." It is a combination of several types of games and formulas and isn't a bare bones "shooter" like Doom.

I'd say your face is the best face ever, but it's not really a face because it's about to be combined withmy fist!
Ive played every PC fps in the last 15 years, and played valve games for over 10 years now. COD4 has taken the top spot from Valve. It is the total package. Valve games rely on mods. If Valve didn't sell out after HL1, and actually released new games instead of focussing on steam and rolling in the $$ they probably would have come up with a new game to take the throne, but they stagnated.
Crysis is the best tech demo for PC but the gameplay leaves a lot to answer for.
I've played Doom, SS2, and them all. But both of those games are definitely dated. If you don't take into account the impact of the game during the time period it was released, I'll have to go with Crysis, like semi_xxx said.
I played Doom many years later after it was released, when the standards of PC gaming have gone far beyond Doom graphically and gameplay-wise.
HL2 was great, but I thought it was vastly over-praised. Half Life 1 was pretty interesting, but personally I'm not into fighting aliens. I've recently finished Episode Two and I can say its a great leap over HL2 in terms of "fun". Less wandering into rooms and rooms shooting up the same enemies, and more intense action sequences where you defend against an antilion invasion or evade mines dropped by Helicopters, or try to hold your own against four hunters, or take down striders that are trying to destroy the rebel complexes.
Oh, and one more thing. I'd like to hit anyone who says COD4 is the best fps ever with a hot frying pan. The story telling was weak. For such a linear game, one would expect the story to be more intuitively developed, like Half Life 2. The gameplay was polished but felt lacking in many areas. It didn't feel as intense as it looked, to be honest. Although these are personal opinions, I'd think many others would feel the same.
As for multiplayer, there are many great games. Can't really pick one that's the best, but BF2, Wolf ET, Halo, and TF2 are the ones I've liked over the years.
Anyone who doesn't say Doom is either lying to themselves or hasn't actually played it.
These all-encompassing statements are just a matter of personal opinion. Not to accuse you, but I think many people who say X game from 1991 is the best game ever is being a rather pretentious dilettante.

I agree, it shouldn't have been labeled JK3 (even if it was magnificent), but I consider most expansion packs by themselves, as well. The exception, and even then this isn't always the case, is when the expansion pack just adds onto the base game, such as Diablo 2: LoD.

Doom is still a very fun game to pay.... even such a long time later - Doom 2 aswell. The level desigh has held up remarkably well, and nostaliga and fun overpowers anything that is dated.
Still love playing through the different Dooms, and Quake 1 on my PSP>

I think that's a little unfair - Doom is easily the best FPS within its subgenre. It is not necessarily the best FPS ever (because that is clearly System Shock 2), but within the FPS subgenre built around the notion of slaughtering huge swarms of enemies (Doom, Serious Sam, Painkiller, perhaps even Call of Duty and probably Left 4 Dead), Doom is at present easily the best - quite easily.
The reason people who love these games take such an aggressive stance is that so many modern gamers either haven't played them, can't appreciate them, or dismiss them on account of their age or visual quality.

just think of a game like 1942, siddahartha211 - i mean, it's almost perfect in terms of gameplay; no matter how many gizmos other games in that genre add or how much those games improve graphically, 1942's gameplay is just about perfect and no other game has quite matched it or surpassed it thus far (imo, of course). doom is in that category; it just about perfected that subgenre in terms of gameplay, and all the games that have come out thus far haven't been able to add enough gizmos or done enough to tweak gameplay to surpass doom. i 100% agree with fatshodan on his contention that doom has yet to be surpassed in its subgenre.
A "shooter" entails shooting things. Doom makes shooting things one of the most enjoyable expriences available and does it for far less than a game like Crysis.foxhound_fox
Well, have it your way. Some people would call a constant barrage of enemies as tiring rather than enjoyable. Maybe my view is skewed because I started playing FPS games with Rainbow Six, a tactical shooter.

out of those I would say System Shock 2. But my favorite fps has actually been Crysis, call me stereotypical graphics junky but I really apreciate the game.
same here!

Er have you tried playing COD4 online? I'm guessing not. Try getting through 55 levels of MP in it then come back and re-post your thoughts. In modern days no FPS is a single player only game, in fact if you take wow out of the equation the vast majority of online gamers are playing FPS games in ... multiplayer mode.
And right now, there is no better online FPS game than COD4, fullstop. Battlefield, HL2 + various mods, UT, etc. none of them match COD4.

The second statement is just opinion. Some will argue Team Fortress 2. Others will say CS source is still the best out there.
I have played COD4 online, but you can't simply ignore the single player aspect. From the choices presented, I believe this poll is focusing on that particular facet of the game.
The majority of gamespot players prefer single player to multi player. I agree, to an extent. It's fun to have a lighthearted multiplayer game where you don't really care whether you die and you have smart AI (other people). But it's also fun to have a story, an immersive experience with enemies that attack like a true enemy and on a realistic battlefield.
If it counts, Deus Ex. Not Invisible War, that comparatively sucked. But Deus Ex is both my favourite RPG and FPS. Yeah.noswear
As a shooter you'd regard Deus Ex as one of the best?
almost 30 hours of COD4 later, and being in clan, hell no.Er have you tried playing COD4 online? I'm guessing not. Try getting through 55 levels of MP in it then come back and re-post your thoughts. COD4 is far form the best online game.
Its one of the better ones currently, but hardly the best, heck its just perks (done before in plenty of mods), unlocks (done before ala BF2), and custom kits (done in tribes 1), stuck atop of old game modes.
COD4s multiplayer component stuck with singleplayer doesent even make it the best FPS of this generation anyway.....
