But from what I understand, the most active RTS games are Starcraft and Warcraft III which have their own distinct horrid negatives. Age of Empires III looks really cool but I heard its just not that active. You'll find a game but don't have a big choice.

I think company of hereos is supposed to be pretty active...but that has a steep learning curve.

As to the aspect of PVP, i shall recommend you Shadow of legend. There are three types of PVP available in this game: (1) PVP within the same camp, PVP within the same camp has you utilize the "Matching" feature. The "Matching" feature allows you to have a competitive, yet friendly duel with a fellow comrade. The duel ends when one of you has only 1 HP left. (2) PVP between opposing camps, When you meet another player from the opposing camp on the battlefield, you can automatically fight him or her without having to match or use a flavorant. Players gain honor and reputation points for fighting members of the opposing camp. (3) PK anyone by using the Marauding Flavorant. The item, "Marauding Flavorant", allows you to fight anybody from players to NPCs, and take their dropped items. Be warned though, when using the "Marauding Flavorant", any player or NPC will also be able to attack you.

Guild Wars PvP is rubbish. Warhammer online, Lineage 2, Eve Online and World of Warcraft are admirable.

You know I really like WoW's pvp but gettingot level 80 requires quite a bit of non PvP...when WoW comes out with the system in probably less than a year that gives you experience from doing battlegrounds then that will be a great time
