Anyone know the best free utility that allows you to speed up your PC by defragging, cleaning up junk, registry, etc. Basically maximizes performance.

Crap Cleaner is great for clearing up a couple gigs.

Defraggler is my favorite defraging program.

If you want to go crazy with deleting specific things in your registry, then try out Hijack This. Be careful with this though. I only shows you the files but does not tell you what will happen if you delete it. You could seriously mess your PC up with this.

I hope these help. If you want, check out CNET's list of free utilities. I'm sure any with 4 or more stars are decent.

Most of those programs do nothing, but I will recommend CCleaner. The feature of CCleaner I use most is Cleaner which clears a bunch of crap from your PC that can accumulate over time. As for defrag software, I just use Windows built in one. By default it's scheduled to defrag your hard drive every week, before I knew this I used to wonder why expensive defrag software would scan my drives and only ever get 1-2% fragmentation at the most. I think one feature CCleaner really needs is a driver sweeper, that would be cool.

CCleaner is the only one I'd say everyone needs. Disable programs and services you don't need. If you want the best and fastest defragmentation, Perfectdisk is what I use, but it costs money. It you aren't going to get a good one, you might as well just use the default Windows.

Don't bother with getting programs to free up ram or defragment your registry. Defragging the registry is too risky for the possible milliseconds of load time you might gain on launching programs, and your ram will automatically be cleared when you restart Windows. If you have programs that still use up your ram, like I said earlier, disable unnecessary programs and services with CCleaner.

One program you may want to look at if you're too lazy to do that other stuff yourself is GameBooster. It can automatically try to scan for unnecessary services and disable them when you enter gaming mode and then reenable them afterwards.
