[QUOTE="t3h_MarK"]Siege weapon in RTS game, they always have low range except in some few gamesAlternatingCaps
Agreed. One of the things I like about WiC and CoH is that the artillery has a long range. However, in less realistic games it doesn't seem right somehow to have incredibly long-ranged units. For instance, I think the Juggernaut is good because it can outrange Obelisks, but still effectivly back up my Mammoths.
well the juggernaught in C&C3 can fire very long if there's a spotter unit so that's not half bad, what i had more in mind is catapult in WC,though the trend now is to replace the "siege weapon" with AT and have artillery has a superweapon.
another cliche in RTS is tohave a counter unit for everything, it's just lame
WW2 games, there is a new one every 3 months. Strategy games where a worker with a hammer or a truck with a crane can build an entire building in 30 seconds. Any strat where your units are built from buildings draws in the newbs who just wanna rush and get a quick victory. This is why Mark of Chaos, Star Wars: Empire at Warand World in Conflict are a breath of fresh air.
Also, your HUMAN character somehow knows how to use alien weapons, he should barely be able to hold them.
- The theme of the lone futuristic soldier who is able to single-handedly take on an entire army of aliens or demons when all of Earth's armies and technology has failed.
- Along the way futuristic soldier mentioned above will aquire a pistol, a machine gun, an energy weapon, a sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher.....in that exact order.
- Western RPGs usually only taking place in a Tolkien-esque fantasy setting....there are so many other great settings that would be perfect for RPGs that are either underused or never used.
-Enemies (aliens, foreign terrorists, demons) who speak english to each other when they logically shouldn't be.
- You're this super hero that can take on anything, can survive a ton of damage, and have the best items and weapons in your possession.....yet your path is blocked by a crate or some other mundane object any 5-year-old could climb over.....also, for all your advanced weaponry or spells, a simple locked wooden door is impenetrable.
- The "Evil Awoken" theme.....ie....in the process of searching some ancient location (it's always someplace ancient) for some ancient artifact / advanced weapon / advanced technology, etc....you (or someone else) managed to unleash some evil force....and now only you can single-handedly stop it.
A lot of you guys nailed many of the cliches. Here are a few:
- Lone mercernary/prisoner/soldier/farmer/other-insignificant-character who was wronged by someone, something, some philosophy, or some concept and thus must exact revenge to save himself, his character, his reputation, his family, his best friend, or the world from ultimate doom.
- Food giving back health. Since when does food restore your health when you're nearly dead from a sword battle?
- Opponent race cars "magically" being always with you even if you get way ahead (the rubber band effect).
- Door locked. Find key. Open locked door. Rinse and repeat. Why can't I just shoot it, smash it, hotwire it open?
- Unbreakable windows, even by explosive weapons.
- You see your objective 50 feet away, but to get to it, you have to do A, B, C, D, E, and F in that order only.
-It's starting to die now but a cliche that I liked in earlier games was the amount of gun you can carry.
-epic battles in the beggining and end of the game, most apperent in WWII games.
-And finally the busty, curvy babes. Heather from SH3 is the only female lead in an M rated game I've played that wasn't absolutly perfect.
"Welcome to generic top-secret military base/research facility! Oh crap, lights are flashing and alarms are going off! Aliens, bent on destroying the world! why? who cares, they're aliens. they always want to destroy the world. Nobody cares about friendly aliens, they aren't fun. here, you get this knife/wrench/weak melee weapon. all our good weapons are currently being used by the army of soldiers that are currently being mercilessly slaughtered by the aliens. I'm sure you'll run across a dead soldier somewhere, hopefully before running across a living alien. Oh, and all the barrels and crates 'round here blow up if you shoot at 'em, so don't hesitate to squeeze off a few rounds if you see an alien standing next to one. Well, now it looks like another faction has shown up that wants to kill the aliens, but they want to kill you too, so you're screwed either way."
and that's just FPS's. Don't even get me started on RPG's...
