Especially in RPG's or adventure games, there is always that one person in each town/stage that tries to coax you into playing some form of gambling minigame.

The fact that every other game must use barrels or crates to populate their enivronments. I'm tired of seeing the same old static objects used to decorate all too many game worlds.

Maybe I have just played too many games. I don't know...:|

[QUOTE="t3h_MarK"]Siege weapon in RTS game, they always have low range except in some few gamesAlternatingCaps

Agreed. One of the things I like about WiC and CoH is that the artillery has a long range. However, in less realistic games it doesn't seem right somehow to have incredibly long-ranged units. For instance, I think the Juggernaut is good because it can outrange Obelisks, but still effectivly back up my Mammoths.

well the juggernaught in C&C3 can fire very long if there's a spotter unit so that's not half bad, what i had more in mind is catapult in WC,though the trend now is to replace the "siege weapon" with AT and have artillery has a superweapon.

another cliche in RTS is tohave a counter unit for everything, it's just lame

WW2 games, there is a new one every 3 months. Strategy games where a worker with a hammer or a truck with a crane can build an entire building in 30 seconds. Any strat where your units are built from buildings draws in the newbs who just wanna rush and get a quick victory. This is why Mark of Chaos, Star Wars: Empire at Warand World in Conflict are a breath of fresh air.

Also, your HUMAN character somehow knows how to use alien weapons, he should barely be able to hold them.

Rats in the basement/sewers in RPG games.

Treasure chests.

And all powerful dark lords ALWAYS has some sort of weakness that one small random traveler can exploit.

Also if anyone played bards tale, it made fun of a lot of these cliches.

- The theme of the lone futuristic soldier who is able to single-handedly take on an entire army of aliens or demons when all of Earth's armies and technology has failed.

- Along the way futuristic soldier mentioned above will aquire a pistol, a machine gun, an energy weapon, a sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher.....in that exact order.

- Western RPGs usually only taking place in a Tolkien-esque fantasy setting....there are so many other great settings that would be perfect for RPGs that are either underused or never used.

-Enemies (aliens, foreign terrorists, demons) who speak english to each other when they logically shouldn't be.

- You're this super hero that can take on anything, can survive a ton of damage, and have the best items and weapons in your possession.....yet your path is blocked by a crate or some other mundane object any 5-year-old could climb over.....also, for all your advanced weaponry or spells, a simple locked wooden door is impenetrable.

- The "Evil Awoken" theme.....ie....in the process of searching some ancient location (it's always someplace ancient) for some ancient artifact / advanced weapon / advanced technology, etc....you (or someone else) managed to unleash some evil force....and now only you can single-handedly stop it.

  • Playing as some American special forces soldier/squad has become old. There are more countries in the world than America, why can't we be a British special forces squad or a multi-cultured special forces squad instead.
  • Starting off the game with a knife/melee weapon and then aquiring a pistol, smg, shotgun, assault rifle, sniper rifle, rpg/explosives. For once i'd like to start the game off with a decent weapon and be able to upgrade it with various options, Eg - laser sights, scopes, different ammo types, stocks, rails, extended ammo clips etc.
  • Saving the world has become tiresome. For once can i not just save a city, a country or better yet be let someone else save the world while i help them to do it!
  • WW2 games! i'm bored of playing as the allied forces in this setting, either stop making games for this setting or let us play as the Germans for once. Believe it or not there was a point in WW2 that Germany was crushing everything that stood up to it. How about letting us play as the Germans at the Normandy beach landings?
  • RTS games where you and your opponent are on the same map and all you have to do is point and click and immediately your units have arrived at the front gates to the enemy base. For once i'd like an RTS game where the maps are huge requiring units to be transported via Air or Sea to reach the enemy. Eg - you load your units onto a plane and send it to the enemy landmass/location and air drop them in to an area there. Then send those troops to secure a beachfront so the rest of your army can be unloaded from ships and you can begin to advance on enemy locations.
  • RPG games where a great evil demon/wizard/undead/god has awoken and brought with it the possible destruction of the earth. Why can't it just be a simple man/woman who has begun to invade your land to expand their empire?
  • RPG games that you start of as a simple common person who somehow is the son/daughter of a god/powerful being or is the chosen one in some prophecy. Why can't we start of as a guard, soldier, merchant, noble something that involves us not starting the game in the same brown rags every RPG has us start in.
  • Games that assume we always want to be good and save the world, perhaps i want to be evil and destroy or claim the world as my own?
  • Grinding in MMO games.
  • Master Chief, the stereotypical genetically/physically modified super trooper with the uber armour and abilities who never reveals his or her face.
  • Always playing as a human in FPS games, why can't we be an alien race fighting another alien race. I'm bored of seeing the same type of plot to SciFi FPS games, "Alien race invades earth, humans fight back, player takes control of human hero character and kills all aliens solo". Why can't it be the opposite way round?
  • Squads/AI/NPC's that say stuff like "We'll wait here and secure this doorway while you go and kill everything in that room/dungeon/hallway". So while i go solo with half my health, low on ammo my 4 squad mates stand around waiting for me!
  • Research projects gone wrong in super secret bases/labs underground and everyone has turned into some freakish creature. No lights work, everything is dark, all soldiers the base/lab had are dead yet the security guns/system is online and attacking me.
  • Mentors/fathers die and have their son/daughter/pupil devote their life to bloody revenge against the person who killed them.
  • Zombies, enough already! for crying out loud its no fun anymore shooting them. Change it to werewolves or vampires or something for crying out loud!
  • Locked doors and having to find keycards or codes to unlock them. If i have a grenade or high explosive i should be able to blow the door. Same goes with blockades and stuf like that, why go around the obstacle when i have the equipment to blow it out of my way?
  • Crates/barrels/boxes/canisters/bins etc that however much you shoot them, still dont break/allow your bullets to pierce them. If you shoot a wooden crate with a weapon the bullet should be able to go through it and kill whatever is behind it, same goes with explosives. If only crates from the real world were as strong as the gaming world!
  • WMD's (Weapons of Mass Destruction) in whatever form have become a cliche now. Whether its a bomb, rocket, sword, artifact etc its cliched and been used before hundreds of times.

Thats all i can think of at the moment....i'm sure there is more lol

-There's always an ancient evil that exists for no other reason than to destroy everything it touches, and it always awakens and gets sealed away in given intervals, usually in cycles of 100 or 1000 years. As to why it just gets sealed away instead of being destroyed outright, we will never know. The good news is, this time, it WILL be destroyed for good? The bad news? YOU get to do it. -Only YOU can save the world. Well, okay, make that you and your friends. In any case, though, it doesn't matter if there are massive armies of elite soldiers or whatever to confront the ancient evil, since only you and your ragtag group of fellow adventurers will even manage to live to tell about it. -There is always some sort of ancient, powerful race that has since disappeared and left some of their precious, powerful relics behind. These relics are often the key to either saving the world or destroying it. It's also quite common for the protagonist to just happen to come into possession of such a relic as an ordinary person, perhaps by being born on a planet once used as a base for that ancient, powerful race that just so happens to construct a powerful starship and also just so happens to have YOU as its captain. -You ALWAYS start off weak and develop into an all-powerful demigod by the end of the game. Even in sequels, which often have the protagonist missing most of his/her godly powers for no adequately explained reason. (Metroid, anyone?) -Everyone speaks English(or whatever language that particular copy of the game is being targeted towards), with few to no exceptions, nationality, society, or race be damned. (Yes, I know the person right above me just mentioned it, but it also annoys me somewhat.) -Nobody seems to care if you walk into their homes and swipe everything that isn't nailed down. (This is mostly a JRPG thing, as several titles like The Elder Scrolls series are quite the contrary.) -There are always rats at the very beginning of a RPG. Rabid, oversized rats that will try to bite and scratch you no matter what, even in the later part of the game where you can kill them pathetically easily. And it's not always rats that are overly aggressive towards adventurers no matter how strong they may be-see Cliff Racers and other such annoying creatures. -Anything and everything you meet in a game with random encounters is just plain out to kill you for no good reason. Worse off, you usually can't avoid these random encounters, since you're walking in the map and suddenly have to engage in a battle scene with those annoying rabid rats that you can kill by blinking your eye or some other effortless movement with each step you take. -RTS units that are too braindead to do anything without having to be explicitly ordered to each and every time by the commander. (Okay, I haven't played any modern RTSs, but those that I have played have units that don't take cover when fired upon, don't know how to patrol, etc.) -If humanity ever gets into any contact with any other sentient species, those aliens will devote themselves to the systematic eradication of humanity for no particular reason, to the point where they're about to annihilate Earth. This is where the game starts, for you to come in and save the day. -In those games that have you playing as some sort of soldier at a research base gone wrong or something like that, how come the best weapon you have is always a mere pistol? You would expect to be equipped from the outset with a rifle, shotgun, SMG, or something of that nature.

A lot of you guys nailed many of the cliches. Here are a few:

- Lone mercernary/prisoner/soldier/farmer/other-insignificant-character who was wronged by someone, something, some philosophy, or some concept and thus must exact revenge to save himself, his character, his reputation, his family, his best friend, or the world from ultimate doom.

- Food giving back health. Since when does food restore your health when you're nearly dead from a sword battle?

- Opponent race cars "magically" being always with you even if you get way ahead (the rubber band effect).

- Door locked. Find key. Open locked door. Rinse and repeat. Why can't I just shoot it, smash it, hotwire it open?

- Unbreakable windows, even by explosive weapons.

- You see your objective 50 feet away, but to get to it, you have to do A, B, C, D, E, and F in that order only.

-It's starting to die now but a cliche that I liked in earlier games was the amount of gun you can carry.

-epic battles in the beggining and end of the game, most apperent in WWII games.

-And finally the busty, curvy babes. Heather from SH3 is the only female lead in an M rated game I've played that wasn't absolutly perfect.

"Welcome to generic top-secret military base/research facility! Oh crap, lights are flashing and alarms are going off! Aliens, bent on destroying the world! why? who cares, they're aliens. they always want to destroy the world. Nobody cares about friendly aliens, they aren't fun. here, you get this knife/wrench/weak melee weapon. all our good weapons are currently being used by the army of soldiers that are currently being mercilessly slaughtered by the aliens. I'm sure you'll run across a dead soldier somewhere, hopefully before running across a living alien. Oh, and all the barrels and crates 'round here blow up if you shoot at 'em, so don't hesitate to squeeze off a few rounds if you see an alien standing next to one. Well, now it looks like another faction has shown up that wants to kill the aliens, but they want to kill you too, so you're screwed either way."

and that's just FPS's. Don't even get me started on RPG's...

I said it was cliche. Cliche doesn't mean a complaint.
