I really want to play DayZ but I know that a standalone game is in the works. What I want to know is, should I buy ArmA 2: Combined Operations and play the mod or wait for the game to release. What i'm worried is the the server populations will decrease as more players purchase the actual game.

Just did some reading, apparently there's a game that's releasing soon entitled "The War Z". Which has been under development for a while and has very much the same mechanics as Day Z. Hmmmm.

Just wait for the separate release that will be coming out in a couple of months.

The WarZ won't be the same as DayZ no matter how hard it will try. It's not going to capture that magic and none of the clones will, even if they are excellent. DayZ is the only game when I confront other humans my heart actually beats really hard and I get really tense. It's such an amazing feeling

I'd say get the game now to play for various reasons. right now is the boom for the game, after the steam sale everyone is playing it. It's probably at it's peak now. Also when the standalone launches it's not going to be much cheaper than what you can get the game for now. Sure there are hackers in the game but don't let the exaggerated claims about them fool you. I play often and barely ever encounter hackers

I recommend just getting Day Z now. Even with its wealth of bugs and other issues, it's still more fun and interesting to play than most games on the market.

Even if DayZ's going standalone, I'd still say buy Combined Ops. The co-op games for the vanilla multiplayer are really fun especially the insurgency and ACE servers, along with a campaign to occupy your time.

I say just wait for The War Z, that game has been in development for longer and will surely feel more polished when release,

its features also seems much more promising.

It's really an amazing game but you have to stick with the initial learning curve, once you do the game really pays off. People tend to hate the inventory system because it seems so broken at first but when you get used to it, I find at least that I really love it and it sort of adds to the gameplay. It's no secret that the inventory system is a bit of a mess, however what I find is it causes looting items to take longer. So when you kill another player you have the decision to loot them and risk being killed by a friendly of his. It would take away from the game if looting was quicker being able to quickly run past the body and auto loot or something.

I love this sort of game though, I logged in, I felt lost and I never had that feeling in a game since like SWG back in 2003. I love the experience of having to work everything out myself and having no tutorial and all that hand holding **** It offers 100% freedom to do what you want which not many games do.

It's basically a loot based game where the risk of finding the good loot means you'll have to fight players and if you lose then you have to start all over again. The other thing it does is makes playing with friends really helpful because they can come and quickly pick you up and resupply you or pick up your stuff for you.

Amazing mod, if you don't like losing all your stuff, if you don't like PVP and if you don't like having no tutorial then it isn't for you.

I would wait a while before getting DayZ. From what I have seen right now it is pretty buggy and I hear alot about hackers. I am waiting for the WarZ or DayZ as a standalone game before I buy ArmA II:CO just to play the mod. I am really interested to see how the WarZ plays out because it has been in development since before DayZ and because it is releasing as a full game, it will probably be much more polished when it comes out later this year. But DayZ is still in alpha phase so it could become much better than it is now.

But the game is so fun that you'll keep on playing despite the amount of times you'll die from glitches.

I am pretty sure that the dev said that he would go for the"minecraft" model, you pay for alpha and you get the full game and all updates for "free". Thus it won't be finished for quite some time.

I tthink Minecraft and DayZ have very different alpha states. Standalone Day Z won't take very long because BIS already has most of their work laid out ahead of them: they have the engine, they have the ideas, they have the player feedback, and most importantly - they have more manpower than what Notch had. Hell, Day Z has already had a publicly tested alpha - so I doubt standalone DayZ is going to be in alpha that long. And considering that they are fixing bugs as they go - they likely won't be in beta for that long either. Day Z's release state is a year away at most.

As for the other game, all 'The War Z' has is a few screenshots and a bullet list of features. Why anybody would wait for that over this is beyond me.

So all in all, it's a mixed bag with a lot of people saying wait and a lot of people saying don't. What I really want is a true zombie survival game where in your biggest fear would be seeing the light of a flare you didn't open. So I'm thinking I might buy ArmA 2: Combined Ops. The WarZ looks good but it also looks like it's dumbed down a bit to seem more approachable, which is fine, but I'm looking for some hardcore **** so thanks everybody. If anyone can change my mind...

Day Z is exactly what you're looking for and nothing else comes close. I'd love to recommend you an alternative but no game is quite like it.

War Z wasn't even announced until Day Z has been out for a considerable amount of time. If the idea for this game hardly original, please show me where the concept for this game exists aside from Day Z. War Z is behind the curb in every sense at the moment.

yea thats probably the best way to go at this point if you don't want to wait for the stand alone. Only playing with friends does remove a lot of tension though.

That's no way to play the game. The strong aspect of the game is the player to player interaction, and you're completely missing that if you just play with your friends. Ideally you'd want to play with at least 30+ people. There are a lot of hackers in the game and often it does ruin the experience, but the game on its own is still enjoyable enough. You can avoid most of the hackers if you just avoid popular servers.

I was on the gamespot server last night, me and the guy I was with were trying to repair the chopper, the guy I was with went into Cherno for parts, saw someone, and we told them what we were doing since he seemd friendly. Next thing we know, the guy we ran into had teleported us (I was in a boat) to the helicopter and insta-repaired/fueld it. The guy seemed friendly, so we got in with him not wanting him to kill us, he then flew around for a while and crashed purposefully into a tree.

The server had 4 people on it, never seen it with more than 10.

I have a fair few friends that play DayZ. The tupe of friends that would stab you in the back for a laugh so the tension would remain. It'd just mean I wouldn't get as angry cause I know they're not hacking.

Even if you buy Arma 2 for the mod and buy the game you will be spending less than the price of any other full game.

The standalone will be out by the end of the year says Dean Hall and it will start in alpha mode much like Minecraft.

The War Z is a separate game being made with the same engine as War inc and is coming out by the end of the year too. It will be more of an mmo and include skills and more of a group system so you can group with friends easier than Day Z and also npcs with safe zones and a cure to the zombie virus which you can buy or go out and find at night by extracting the blood of rare zombies with glowing red eyes. All servers will be on the same time schedule and have a few differences. 3 character slots, and an easier mode that won't have a permadeath will be included.

Honestly, I will probably get both. War Z seems like it will be a little more casual. Both will have multiple maps to play on. Day Z will add them over time.
