Can anyone actually confirm this is in the Guiness book of records? TC might've gotten the list from some less-than-reliable internet source thinking its real. Or he might've just made it up to troll about PC/console. But lets assume he's not trolling :P

This list makes so little sense I can hardly believe anyone would come up with it.

Excuse my sceptism... I think you understand where I was coming from. Still some more whining on my part: the site clearly states it is a CONSOLE top 50. You probably missed that part, but it is worth pointing out. Knowing PC games are not even included in the list makes it slightly more believable, but there are still some weird choices. They probably just took the sales chart or somethingand compiled a list based on that.

lol at Halo in there. bedram793

Despite what some would have everyone believe, Halo was very well done. Can't vouch for the 2 after that since I haven't played them, but Halo was a blast. I beat it on all skill levels and enjoyed every moment of it. Can't say the same for a lot of other popularshooters.

Definitely a poor list, even if the list was forr console games only. Some of the listed games I could agree with, but not most of them.

Oh man, absolutely I had no clue it was a CONSOLE only list. Thanks for pointing that out for me.

10% of those games are good and worth mentioning, and should be on better on a more notable selection. The rest are a joke.

Precyse

Co-sign, i can see how they added maybe 5-10% of those games on that list. But some of the picks just make me shake my head. Outrun2? MarioKart #1? Halo? Ridge Racer? WTF! :?

Great list, with tons of great games on there.

And to all the sour grapes, you guys are misunderstanding the purpose of the list. It's not the 50 best games, or the 50 most revolutionary games, it's the 50 most influential games (I think from a social aspect).

If you ask you average gamer (including console gamers as this list includes them) most won't know what the heck is Planescape, or Dungeon Keeper, or whatever. But if you ask them if they have ever heard of Mario Kart, Starfox, Halo, ect just about everyone and thier mother knows and had played (and enjoyed) these games.

I dont find COD, Ridge Racer or Halo revolutionary sorry.

A list like this with some console games on it is fine imo. If i made a list it would probably be close to 50-50 (with a slight edge to pc games). But some of hte games on this list jus tmake no sense. How is Ridge Racer influential? Tell me please.

And after reading more in this thread, it turns out it's a console only list anyways lol...I have no idea why so many of you have sand in your ****** over this.

On a side note, there are revolutionary games on that list, though.

In other words, it's the list of the most popular and mainstream games.

I can't believe they didn't include Doom. It's on consoles too, FFS. Also then it should include The Sims, Starcraft, Counter Strike, World of Warcraft. Pretty much everyone who has any amount of knowledge about games knows them.

Yes, a lot of time thats what influential mean...how many people those games touched and influenced. Doom for the consoles was pretty craptacular, and for your others those are PC games, and it is a console only list.

Doom was pretty good on PS1 and N64, imo.

Console only eh? Why would they do that? Are they trying to deny that there are a lot of influential PC games? (Teh conspiracy! They're trying to kill PC gaming!) The list is horribly biased, and inaccurate. The people who made the list clearly have little knowledge about games, even if it's console only that's still a garbage list.

Sega 32x? Ouch. No wonder you didn't like it.

The list is biased. Console only! It makes me angry  Let the console bashing continue! Consoles = casual trash, PC is superior etc. etc.

So I guess ignoring largely one of the most successful games in history - World of Warcraft makes this list valid.

Wow, what a garbage list.

kozzy1234

No kidding. There's not even a single RTS on there, and what the heck has Mario Kart done to influence gaming? It's more like a list of best sellers excluding the Sims.

This list makes me feel very violated :(

How is Mario Kart he most influencial game of all time? Can we get an explanation for this?

screw that where the fax is zorg (aka most popular text based rpg/adventure game in history), pong, and finally where the fax is grim fandango, and space hulk? this list is so biased to current history games and not 1 is an rts, so i guess warcraft is to lame to mentin and command & conquer hmmm???

In my opinon this list seems to be very suspicious.

OoSuperMarioO
1. I thought you were leaving Gamespot? 2. This is a list of console games only. 3. To all the haters, Halo WAS influential for the consoles. 007 Goldeneye proved that FPS could be done well on the console, but Halo proved that a console FPS could be just as intuitive and easy as a PC FPS. 4. That list mostly sucks.

starcraft can go sit in its little corner its not a defining game, if u use the koreans, i ask then why isnt lineage on the list. it wasnt a defining game, memorable yes. to define a genre u need to achive all its conventions while being attractive to lots of people and be origional. ex. doom is famous for attracing millions of people to slaying demons with huge guns (typical of an fps of the time), but was origional by providing a complex and satisfying experience, with enough replay to beg for one more play the next day. it was the first game to properly "addict" people to a genre and not be on a console.

Influence: the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc.

To influence is to display some form of revolutionary aspect to it, hence why it 'pushes' people to an outcome. If they truly wanted to search for influential games, they SHOULD divulge into the PC platform, since so many games from that platform INFLUENCED so many titles that we have today. Most of the these games ripped off aspects from older games, hence they were the produced effect of an influential force.

QED: This list fails.

The Orange Box?!?! What the f...!? How can a game compilation be influential? A guy sat in a room with a list of statistics and tried to come up with that list. I know it. Maybe they should ask a couple gamers next time.

No we know what the list means but Most of the games on that list are not influential in anyway. If you wanna talk about influence then you would put games like Pac-Man,Halo,Counter Strike, WoW Not crap like Mario kart, lego star wars, bioshock, COD4

How is Star Craft not Influential? It influenced a whole country and helped its way out of depression. Everyone talks about the game and even have classes and tournements for the game.

yes in south korea they do, but then why isnt lineage on that list (more ppl play that then starcraft and war 3 combined in s korea). and really everywhere else its an old time game, with old style conventions. it certainly was memorable meaning u wont ever forget the game, but its hardly worth calling influential, it hardly made me want to jump off a bridge after my online recored went to 21wins-1 loss.
