as if windows xp sp1 wasnt dead enough.. now it is dead. no more steam support for you sucka as of august 31st!

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/valve-drops-steam-support-for-windows-xp-sp1/098212likely this wont effect anyone here though. (that i know of anyway) as valve reckon less than 2% of their entire online community of 40million uses steam on xp sp1

idk whats sadder people still using windows xp without sp2 or how late they are to dropping support XD

About time. I think it's good that companies are dropping support for old software, it's unnecessary expenses. Another great example is the company that added an Internet explorer 7 "tax" for people who shop through the ancient browser. http://www.kogan.com/au/blog/new-internet-explorer-7-tax/

Good luck with all the malware, viruses and worms target on an essentially unsupported and vulnerable decade old operating system then.

XP is a terribly outdated OS. I don't like Steam but nice move from Valve.

Sounds fine to me. Who would still use WIndows XP SP1 when WIndows XP SP2 is out there and can be downloaded for free as a Windows XP user?

Keep it coming, would be nice if they started dropping support for 32 bit as well, well maybe not DROP support but focus on 64 bit a lot more.

XP is fine as long as you have a decent antivirus and use something other than internet explorer.

Xp has about 2 more years of support, after which xp will likely finally die. It'll probably take new devices not shipping with drivers to really drive the stake thru, but I would guess that happens not long after ms drops support.

I have my doubts. Business/enterprise has a never ending love affair with XP. A lot of that comes down to volume license keys and the fact that it runs on practically anything. Businesses had no interest in Vista, and only moderate interest in 7. I bet MS ends up extending support to 2020 or so. They've already extended support several times.

You will want to think about it once Microsoft stops support for XP SP3 in 2014. After that then you won't be getting anymore security patches.

It would be better to upgrade to Win 7 before Win 8 is out.

Driver support is going to dry up way before that. It won't be too long before games are needing 64-bit support, at which point DX9 will no longer be supported, and XP gaming will finally be dead at least. And MS could choose to continue support XP support only for volume licenses. Once security patches stop, and 3rd party security software drys up, you'll finally see the end of "ill never stop using xp" stuff. :p

You mean Valve or Microsoft?

If you meant MS then that's cause of compatibility. Lots of companies still have XP as their majority OS.

Sorry Mr.English (coming from someone who posts links to Chinese Websites).

That's why I was asking the question, or did you miss the ? symbol? Or do you not know what that symbol means? (if so, google it).

From that line you quoted it can easily be mistaken as MS, since they are dropping support as well.

Some people think they are the King Sh*t instead of just politely answering a question.

XP had a good run. XP SP3 will follow suit in 2014. Vista SP2 does the same in 2017 and Windows 7 SP1 follows suit in 2020. It's still not as bad as Apple's drop of support for OSX Tiger (released: 2005). Once OSX Snow Leopard released in 2009, Apple dropped Tiger like a hot potato.

Yeah. About 15% to 17% of gamers still use XP in some form, according to the Steam hardware survey. Probably most of them are running SP3.

People seem to have reading comprehension problems. The OP is talking about how Valve is dropping support for XP Service Pack ONE, not XP as a WHOLE. Makes sense to drop XP SP1 support when SP3 is superior in every way.

You think XP has good security? lol

How about the fact that it takes about 5 seconds to open command prompt (even without having access to cmd.exe), create an admin account on a supposedly locked down account?

I think you're exaggerating, you're saying that anyone can open up command prompt without having access to it and create an admin account if u don't have the privileges? Sounds like fantasy to me.

Uhh, XP SP1?? Dude ... you gotta be jokin' right now. I'm pretty sure SP3 is freely available on windows update. The reason they won't support SP1 or older OS is because of security issues.

Not necesssarily. I'm sure there are people using bootleg XP SP1. WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) would prevent many of them from downloading and installing SP2 or SP3.

Pretty sure you can install service packs if you your windows is flagged. I think you even get "critical" security updates. Hard to believe anyone would be running sp1 considering XP was considered rubbish before SP2 came out...

Right click the desktop, make new text file

Enter this into

@echo off
%systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe
pause

save as whateveryouwant.bat

Go ahead and google how to make an administrator account in the command prompt to go from there

the 'fun' in this case are the better productivity tools like remoteapp for the hospitals we manage - in my experience, corps have been rolling win7 out for a while now. dunno what kind of old and busted places you're talking about, unless you mean the gov't :)

the 'fun' in this case are the better productivity tools like remoteapp for the hospitals we manage - in my experience, corps have been rolling win7 out for a while now. dunno what kind of old and busted places you're talking about, unless you mean the gov't :)

I mean any sector that isn't over funded to hell and back ;)

You must really mean some po dunk backwoods hovel.
