the retail and grocery stuff use custom POS applications that pretty much ignore the OS they're running on - the gov't and military just because they use old things in general, due to some multi-year approval everything seems to have to go through and super-lockdown-securityness. the non-POS retail clients and all of our medical clients have long since switched over to win7/new OSX, though. if nothing else, they're on a 3-4 year desktop refresh cycle, and to still be on XP now means they have to have gone out of their way to stay on it since win7 launched!

[QUOTE="timma25"][QUOTE="Makari"] businesses loooooove 7. combined with 2008r2 and probably server 2012, there's a lot more fun stuff that can be done with an enterprise that has money to throw at good solutionsMakari
Naw B, business' love stability and not needing to retrain however many employees. More fun /= cost efficiency, productivity, and reliability.

Where I work, they only use systems that don't involve logic, or are hard to use.

1. You dont need an Anti Virus program but you pretty much need a firewall.

2. Dont trash XP, or Win200 for that matter, both are extremely reliable and are still used in a variaty of real world applications ranging from retail stores to manufacturing to all kinds of stuff.

3. SP1 is old and this will force people to update to newer SP2 or eventually SP3 and possibly allow upgrades to be possible for the Steam client that were not before.

its really not that big of a deal, but seeing as how the mess with Win8 is Im not exactly overly happy when my neck will be on the chopping block and Ill need to upgrade.

I havnt posted here in a loooong time but I see, GS hasnt changed a bit.

Why can't I trash an OS that has the security equivalent of an open front door?

Because its as stupid as trashing the Ford Model T in todays terms. Its old, and it only makes you look stupid. Win7 will be in the same position in its lifecycle eventually as all programs are.

No. That'd be like trashing a model T if every time you got into one it exploded.

why would anyone use Windows XP SP1... All the discs have 2 and regardless if you did have 1, you get SP 2 and 3 free.

Well thankfully I'm still running Windows XP SP3. Runs more reliably than my Windows 7 setup, that's for sure.

I never noticed any stability difference between XP SP 3 and Win 7 SP 1. Most of it is back end compatibility.( Drivers, software, games etc ) I, myself, am pretty happy running Win 7 64.

One day I booted up my Windows 7 and my Aero features became grayed out. I haven't been able to get them back since that point. Sounds trivial but I spent a lot of time trying to get it back working the way it was and nothing will seem to do it until I reformat. Lots of annoying compatibility issues too. Lately, my AMD Catalyst Control center simply doesn't even work anymore. I've reinstalled drivers and even ran programs designed to wipe every trace of AMD-software on my system but no matter what I do, I get a buggy Control center that only works half the time but doesn't work at all. But WinXP is now suffering a similar issue due to it being older and all. I'm very satisfied with Windows 7 though. I remember that I had a multi-boot setup with XP and Vista and I maybe only fired up Vista a dozen times to check out some DX10 titles.

I have been using Windows 7 since 2009 and I have had no problems. I thought I would hate it and go back to XP, but I will never touch XP again.

Yeah same here, only time I ever had a bluescreen was with dodgy RAM which isn't the OS's fault.. In fact every single result from RAm testing indicated a failure and yet Windows still managed to function rather well apart from the occasional bluescreen every day or two.

I run both on separate computers and use them almost equally every day. My Windows XP computer hasn't been reformatted in 3 years and got buttraped by viruses a couple of years ago (which I had to remove using a lengthy procedure). The OS as a whole is simply more responsive to me. When a program is giving me trouble in Windows 7 - it takes a lot more effort to close than it does in XP. I shouldn't have to bring up the task manager every time a program freezes, especially if I have to wait 3 seconds for a screen to pop up before I can even access it. XP boots up for me in less than a minute. On Windows 7, it's at least a couple of minutes before I can get any response from any programs. It's also worth mentioning that my Windows 7 uses as much 35% system memory just idling (only Steam in the background). That's with 6GB of RAM too. XP uses 20% for me, and that's with half as much RAM. Don't get me wrong, I like Windows 7 more than XP in most aspects. But when it comes to reliability and performance, XP is still king.

If there is SP3, why not drop SP2 as well? Valve is being pretty lenient here.

*Sigh* Really? We are going to do this? Really? What I was saying is that its old and does not at all compete with modern software running on modern hardware and would be foolish to compare it to the latest and greatest. Of course its not as *secure* as newer OSs yet in trained hands its as safe as most any. But by the time your network is intruded to the point where the Operating Systems security matters then its the failure of your network you should be upset about and not your Operating system. Model Ts are awesome but have nothing on newer cars its the same idea. That older models have nothing on latest and greatest. But your absurd Herping is really quite pointless and adds nothing to this forum and only takes away so please sir at least be sensible.

You think XP has good security? lol

How about the fact that it takes about 5 seconds to open command prompt (even without having access to cmd.exe), create an admin account on a supposedly locked down account?

GummiRaccoon

I think you're exaggerating, you're saying that anyone can open up command prompt without having access to it and create an admin account if u don't have the privileges? Sounds like fantasy to me.

Right click the desktop, make new text file

Enter this into

@echo off
%systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe
pause

save as whateveryouwant.bat

Go ahead and google how to make an administrator account in the command prompt to go from there

Oh by the way I tried that and guess what... didn't work!
