But here is the old news.
P.S i am sorry if this is an illegal activity posting.

That sounds extremely low I mean extremely low last year I thought reports were in the millions for some games.
I don't know if that's true, but if it is, wow. That's low.
Last year, apparently these were the figures for illegal PC download:
COD: MW2 - 4.1 million
The Sims 3 - 3.2 million
Prototype - 2.35 million
NFS: Shift - 2.1 million
Street Fighter IV - 1.85 million

Yeah, this year's most pirated is pretty low, only 260,000. I'm glad though.
I'll play devils advocate here: It might be low by comparison but the fact that they've chosen to pirate that particular game still says a lot, considering its apparent quality etc. The year isn't over yet. I'd wait to see what the figures are for Black Ops as well. biggest_loserYes that will be the heavy hitter for sure. I also think that New Vegas is gonna get pirated hell of a lot more.
These numbers are completely unreliable. There are people who never finish downloading the game. Additionally, corrupt or incomplete downloads are never accounted for.
lol, do you really believe that?Thats very low and i bet a lot of them bought the game afterwards.

Well I newsgrouped the ISO, and then bought a cdkey from the blizzard store to input when installing.. I don't see how they can put a number on the amount of people that used the crack. Also that number is probably inflated, becaues the first couple p2p releases were not cracked properly. I bet a ton of people downloaded all attempts at cracking the game.

how would they otherwise play the mp?
You can just play the SP. I solely play Starcraft II for SP.260k? If that's the worst case of piracy, beers are on me. I hate to say it, but removing LAN and Battlenet 2.0 might have been a step in the right direction. I'm sure there's a way to circumvent it, but this undoubtedly put a dent in the number of folks who pirate then play via VPN.

Tthe only thing that surprises me is that it was only downloaded 260k times. I was expecting numbers to be in the millions.

What's the connection you are drawing here BL, that quality (SC2 considered a higher quality game) is irrelevant to piracy? It seems popularity matters more than quality. Although that doesn't always seem to be consistent either, but the tracking isn't exact so who knows.
The most amazing thing is how low the [largest] number is so far for this year compared to figures thrown around in previous years. I mean, that's fantastic news for PC gaming if true, but it's hard to imagine. The low figure doesn't have anything to do with something Blizzard implemented with SC2 either, because in prior years titles further down the "top" list were downloaded significantly more times than this as well.
If SC2 had LAN pirating would be in the millions I'm certain.260k? If that's the worst case of piracy, beers are on me. If we're to believe the numbers, we should also congratulate EA for keeping Mass Effect 2 piracy numbers even less than SC2's 260k so far with optional disc-check only DRM on the base game. Versus what, supposedly 2+ million for a title such as EA's own Need For Speed: Shift last year?
Mass Effect 2 is a great title from a publisher that's playing very fair with PC gamers these days in regards to DRM, I'd be more than happy to congratulate them!
But this is why I wasn't quick to give credit to something Blizzard has implemented for keeping the numbers low, it seems something much more encompassing industry-wide has taken place. Unless we don't believe the all the details of the numbers, which of course none are exact measurements...or pirates had absolutely no interest (relatively) in any titles not named Starcraft 2.
Yup. Last year some games nearly hit 1 million. And some did, as far as I remember. That is low, considering, but piracy is always bad news, imho. On the contrary, I dont think the people who pirated Starcraft 2 would have purchased it anyways. I for one, purchased this game day one, and I'm extremely satisfied. GOTY 2010.That sounds extremely low I mean extremely low last year I thought reports were in the millions for some games.

Wasn't Blizz sueing Pirates, Cheaters and Hackers? Maybe Pirates are getting scared?trastamad03
Nah, the main attractive of Starcraft II is the multiplayer; without a valid access to Battle.net 2.0 there's not much reasons to play the game. Is the same with BC 2: I didn't finished the campaign until 6 months after the purchase, all my time and work was focusing in leveling and enjoying in the multiplayer.
Also, Blizzard was suing people that used not official cheats in the game, due their disruptive impact to the fair community, not anonymous people that pirated the game -that also has no way to interact in BN 2-.
I have to confess back in the day in India, piracy was the norm. I am extremely proud to say that ever since I bought Deus Ex back in 2007, I haven't been party to illegal downloading. Realizing how much this hurts the industry, it just makes me sad.I agree. It's not really justifiable at all if you ask me. There are only a few scenarios I can think of that it would be some-what acceptable, but most people say, "Oh, I wouldn't have bought it anyway" or something like that. I really don't understand how that works... you sit there and play the game that you would "never have considered playing/buying" anyway?
I wish people would stop trying to justify piracy. If you don't want to buy a game, you shouldn't be playing it either. If you do, know that you are stealing.
Sorry, I was on a bit of a tangent.chandu83
This is how it works for me, and it actually makes sense. I don't buy games that aren't interesting to me, and therefore I don't play them because I don't want to - so why should people bother taking the time to download something that they are not interested in? The formerly described pirates are just making lame excuses... the fact is they don't want to pay, plain and simple.
[QUOTE="jedikevin2"]Um.... That is Extremely low.... Something just doesn't add up if they saying thats the most this year. lucfonzyI was thinking the same, only 260K? wow good year for the PC eh!? Same here. Compared to numbers of what some previous big pc games got pirated this seems quite low especially since no one knows how many of those 260000 people would have actually bought the game if it wasnt available at torrent sites Besides with blizzard selling 3million Sc2 copies and projected 5-6million copies to be sold by the end of year 260000 seems like a drop in the ocean

Greed man. That's what its all about. People will download anything if they don't have to pay for it. I still know people who would just go on downloading from torrents and most of the time they never even play those games. They just want to fill the hard drives. They don't understand how much it hurts the industry.
That depends entirely on if they were going to buy it originally.. Many of these pirates are in countries where they don't have access to the game sales wise, or the game is entirely too expensive based in their region... Piracy figures can only get you so far in claiming its hurting the industry.. Its a empty figure that you really can't use one way or the other..
[QUOTE="Tuzolord"]lol, do you really believe that? For Starcraft 2 there is a good probability that they would considering how important multiplayer is to it. I don't think anyone would consider pirating it over buying it in this case atleast as you're pirating a tiny part of what makes the game what it is.Thats very low and i bet a lot of them bought the game afterwards.

QFT, i remember when people where talking about the Humble Indie Bundle piracy and people were saying it was amazing that someone would pirate something for charity ignoring the fact that Paypal only covers a small number of nations. That depends entirely on if they were going to buy it originally.. [QUOTE="Mystic-G"][QUOTE="Mephers"]psh, and piracy is a big problem...yeah...right.MephersIt actually is. I disagree.
Trust me... the pirates didn't go anywhere. This year just hasn't been a big year for PC games. Wait until Black Ops comes out then tell me it isn't a problem.

Assassin Creed was pirated 700 000 times...BEFORE the game was released. And now AC II the number is below 200 000? That's a big improvement. Also you would think Mass Effect 2 is big with pirates. The most highly reviewed game of the year, SP only, again if it was below Starcraft II numbers then piracy really stagnated. Same with BC2. If it sold 2 millon on PC , but was pirated less than 200 000 times, I would say that is pretty excellent.Honestly there have been a lot of great sales on games lately. Especially on steam. I dont do these bad things anymore and in fact i have purchased games that i aquired before and beat, just to show support for the company. But with some of these awesome prices its kinda crazy not to just buy them. I got bioshock the other day on steam for 5 bucks. The l4d2 games and tf2 are 10 bucks right now. Ive played those games for countless hours each and they cost me as much as a tshirt. The fact that the great games are getting cheaper and there are so many awesome sales could definitely help lower the numbers. Granted starcraft is still crazy expensive but im just saying there are a lot games cheap to keep people busy this year and maybe distract them from stealing so many. Just a thought. Probably wrong and i may get flamed or whatever but its just my take on it.
That sounds extremely low I mean extremely low last year I thought reports were in the millions for some games.

You're correct. Those numbers are calculated only from torrent downloads. There are a lot more ways for pirates to download games other than using torrent files.

The number last year were probably grossly over exaggerated. Just go on a big torrent site and see how many leechers a game has every day, and add all of them up. They won't even come close to a million.
