We all know that the 8800s sit at the top of the stack, but where do the 8600, 8500, 8400, and 8300 lie?

What 7xxx series cards are they comparable? On one hand, I've heard that an 8600 will give less preformance than a 7600, but on the other hand, I've also heard some people claim that it's better than the 7600.

I haven't been able to find any benchmarks for these cards either. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The difference in performance between the 8000s is based on their numerical order ie 8800 is faster than 8600 which is faster than the 8500 etc. They also vary based on the ending ie Ultra is faster than GTX which is faster than GT which is faster than GS.

They are ranked here if you want the real technical differences:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html

As for the difference between series, the 7000 compared to the 8000 series shows about a 40-50% improvement in frame rates between cards of the same level ie 7900 GTX compared to the 8800 GTX.

Some benchmarks here:

The 8600 gt is 20-30% more powerful than the 7600gt.

The 8500 gt and 8400gs dont have a big difference, but they are better than all the low end 7300 series.

The 8500gt should be named 8300gt and the 8400gs should be named 8200gs.

You should think that next games will come in dx10 and 8800(GTS,GTX,ULTRA) is the only one can handle dx10 decent, 8600 really sucksindx10(less then 20fps)

agreed, the 8800 series will handle dx10 on mid-high settings, you should wait for the next Nvidia and Ati series to play games in Dx10 maxed.

The 8500 gt is 128 bit the 8400 gs is 64 bit, that is a huge differrence, and the 7300 gt will beat the 8400 gs any day.
