This one is dedicated to all the Haters who think an MMO going F2P = Death...

Shame it's not all good news with the job losses, but looks like it's happening in all companies.

That's probably more to do of how they basically re-released the game by branding it as "buy our game and you can play forever" during the holiday sales, where it was being discounted heavily on Amazon, as well as limited time perks for buying now as opposed to later. Good marketing strategy but that 400% increase is expected with such an aggressive and short-term push.

I know, but there are heaps of people playing and still heaps playing from when it launched. TSW will always be a "niche" market (like EvE), but just wanted to point out it's far from dead.

More player activity doesn't necessarily mean more money, but it's good to see people out exploring again.

TSW might be somewhat alive, but Funcom looks like its in a really bad place. The company just announced a restructering. With investers posting on their site, they might not be too far behind THQ. Was reading TSW sales was what finally put the nail in the coffin, which is ironic cause TSW was a decent game, AoC was a atrocity.

Yeah, it's sad when you see a company bring out a good game (clearly improving on their mistakes before) and then this happening.

Wow - what a suprise - in the month after dropping the subscription fee, and having sales on the core game practically giving it away ($12 on Amazon recently) - they have seen a surge in people playing.

And to celebrate that huge success Funcom announced a series of layoffs and restructuring.

In fact the numbers get even funnier when you read the linked article. Funcom reported selling 70,000 copies in the last 4 weeks (after announcing dropping the subscription fees) which represents almost a 30% increase in LIFETIME sales. That means they have barely sold 300k copies in total. Assuming those 70k are all new players, for the activity in game to have jumped to 400% of normal, it means there must have been very few people actually playing before - maybe just 20k players?

Report back in 6 months when the novelty of it being F2P has ended and you'll see how "well" this is doing.

It's not free to play though, it's pay to play without sub fees. I think it's fantastic it's a lot more successful, it's a new IP that looks genuinely interesting for an MMO - something I can't say the same about all the fantasy trite out there. Saying that really liking GW2.

Its good to see, it was on sale at amazon for 17 dollars so that probley helped. Its a solid mmo, even if it does have some bugs. Its a niche game, it never was going to be mainstream, you have to like the Lovecraft type stuff to like it.

This post is most likely correct - which is a terrible thing, since the game deserved much more attention than it got.

Even with the crappy combat, I honestly find it much more compelling than Guild Wars 2. They nailed what they were aiming to do, and sadly what they were trying to do doesn't appeal to a mass audience.

SWTOR has seen an increase in all numbers since f2p too. I honestly think the only MMO's that can hold a subscription are RIFT and WoW. Both of these games have tons of content and have regular content patches with a substantial amount of content. Both also are very polished MMO's.
