I haven't played The Witcher yet (it's not out here in Australia), but I've seen, heard and read enough to know that I'd greatly prefer it over Oblivion.
If you play games for their stories, then you'll love The Witcher.
Witcher all the way Oblivion is a nice free roaming game but it get repetitive and boring to be honest, Witcher on the other hand keeps on going and going what holds the Witcher together the most for me is the interesting Quests and the occasional interesting encounter with enemy's.
Oblivion dose some things real well tho like the Murdering Elf who goes on a killing spree, the Night Mother Cult ("Amazing"), the Innocent picture that turns into a journey from hell. Sadly Olivions big downfall for me was the main story line i never even attempted it or had any interest 2!
This is a good and bad thing im glad i have the choice and the means to avoid the main plot if i so choose but and actual desire to-do the ma9in plot in the 1st place would have been great.
Thinking about it now it is not so simple as GET WITCHER Oblivion has great great charms but just falls short hmm i really had-fun on Oblivion being a nasty assassin character but the same old enemy's and the same old dungeons and the IMO slightly boring plot killed the experience so its a Witcher vote from me.
I haven't played The Witcher yet, but I do recommend Oblivion.TheMotherBrain
Rofl.
Oblivion is something you'll play over once and then throw away. The Witcher simply owns.humbugdude
I'm playing through Oblivion for the third time now. All thanks to mods.
Do you want a more story based RPG or a sandbox RPG?
I've been an Elder Scrolls fanboy since Arena, but I can't honestly recommend any other RPG over The Witcher. It's probably the best role-playing game I've played since KotOR.
The environments are actually really, really detailed, as is the AI. At one point, I was talking to NPC's on the shoreline near a big city when it began to rain. Much to my suprise, all the NPC's ran to take shelter beneath the boardwalk. I was like, "Holy sh!t! The NPC's don't want to get wet!"
But yeah, if you can, get both. They're both pretty amazing games.
Ah yes tis question... hmmm... Both games are good on thier own accord, and holds thier own...
Story and immersion wise, it is the witcher without a doubt, the people in the world is alot more fleshed out, and thier problems reach further then the occationel bandit, or lost hairloom. (which is a place where Oblivion diddnt do as well). The Witcher takes place in a rather "small" area, compared to Oblivion, but this is the first choice you make when you compare the two I feel. Do you prefer: Open rolling hills that is beautiful (but empty) and fairytale like, or do you prefer towns that feels lived in, dirty, and perhaps a more realistic picture (the graphics in both is generally good).
Next is story: do you prefer a story lite "go where you want, do whatyou want" type of game, or "this is a story... long long ago" type of game.
They kinda cater to different people... The Witcher is (linier altho it doessnt feel like it) in all sence a fairy tale type of story gonebad. It is deep, and facinating, sometimes even disturbing (altho not scary) it is sad... The world of the Witcher is painted with sadness... and you generally feel like youmade a difference, helped who needed help.
Oblivions world, does notreally tell a story (there is one, but its not that good). It is about exploring, which is usually fairly fun (altho its the same tile that is used, over and over.
Finally there is a time when youre done playing the games... the difference here is that The Witcher WILL end, Oblivion will not. Then you are doen with the witcher, you have the same sence in you as tho you had read a good bok, or seen a good movie... altho perhaps alittle sad that it did end. Oblivion, gives you similair (less powerful, but more of them) feelings throughout the game, but the thing never ends O.o altho all reason for keep playing pales, and vanishes.
Ironicly I felt Oblivion became dull after about 40 hours of gameplay. (playied it about 120 total) The Witcher has a storythat lasts for 60-80 hours before finish (playied it through 3 times for: 180 hours)
Last thing is that Oblivion is RPG Lite. (it is a roleplaying game, but more for casuals) The Witcher is a fairly hardcore RPG(if you are a casual playierthis might turn you off)
Dont listen to the oblivion bashers. They dont know what they are talking about or how else can you expain the great reviews it had? Its a must buy for anyone.
But Witcher is not a bad game either. Oblivion is like a huge sandbox type free roaming game and Witcher is extremely linear. Pick your style and go with it.

Oblivion received great reviews from people who didn't play DaggerFall and Morrowind. Worst Expectations/Result game I have everplayed and yes I bought the game. That said Bethesda did make it very easy for modders...
