Well I recently purchased this title and descided to go ahead and give it a shot. I am only on the first level ( after training) and I am just blown away at my stupidity for not trying this game sooner. The atmosphere is amazing and I must say the graphics ( Unreal 2.5) hold up nicley.

What are yor thoughts on the game?

Do you prefer 1st person or 3rd person. I can't make up my mind on which to use.

It's a great game imo. It doesn't beat the first or second thief tho. And I like it better in third person because then you can see more of what you are doing, how well you are hidden if someones searching you, ..

It's an amazing game. One of my favorites.

There are 2 levels that will remain in you head for along time. You'll know them when you get there.

Yea it's amazing. I prefer third person, first person reminds me of the old Thief games, but i don't know it feels like it's meant to be played in third person.

.

The orphanage and the ship level. I don't recall the exact names. People say Silent Hill, Resident Evil et cetera are scary? Oh wait to play these.

I agree with your opinon of the graphics. I played it recently, and I was stunned at how the graphics still look pretty nice and solid. I don't think The Cradle level is as scary as some people say, though it's nicely atmospheric, like all of thief. I found some of the levels in the earlier thief games to be scarier/creepier. Highly memorable game regardless though.

For me, Deadly Shadows wasn't a total mess. It had some respectable qualities. But it doesn't hold a special place in my gaming heart like Thief 1 & 2. Ion Storm just tampered with the Thief formula a tad too much, mostly because of limitations with their weak game engine.

But I am past that now and am looking forward to Thief IV. I am hopeful that Eidos Montreal will put the series back on track and give it the full Thiefy attention it deserves. Too bad it will take forever for them to finish it. It's been a whole year now since its announcement, and virtually no news about progress has been shared.

Its a great game and I think its level design is more consistent than the first games. Towards the end of the first game u had a bunch of short levels with monsters that didn't work as well. I was really angry when I went to a Thief forum board, probably on the Eidos page, and someone made a list of everything he didn't like about the game, every little detail, and there people wearing wigs saying "Here here!" - Christ, it has so many good qualities and the stealth is stronger than any other series.

Thief III: Deadly Shadows is great, but it's not a masterpiece like the first two games of the series. ;)

BTW, has someone tried The Dark Mod for Doom 3? I really want Thief IV toplay like this mod.

Yea it really is. I was missing out. I need to go back and play the first 2. I played this one back when it was released, I was younger and never made it that far, and did not appreciate what this game was.

Oh geez, I hope not. I have been disappointed in The Dark Mod thus far. Judging by the fan missions created for it so far, it reminds me too much of Deadly Shadows. The missions have been very tiny, just like they were in TDS. I'm not sure if this is a Dark Mod limitation, or just the fan authors not taking much time to make bigger missions. For whatever reason, they felt the need to give it a more complex combat system. But Thief is not about combat (hence the title "Thief"). Less focus has been made on enhancing stealth gaming, and more focus has been on adding needless gimmicks to the controls. The graphics may look a bit newer (but even Doom 3 graphics are getting outdated), but so far the fan authors haven't made a mission that is as fun as Thief 1 & 2 missions, or fan missions for those games.

So if I want to get into the Thief series. Should I start from the very beginning? Or can I start with Deadly Shadows? I guess what I'm asking is...are the stories continuous?

You should start with Thief gold. Things will make a lot more sense if you start from the beginning.

Is there anywhere to dowload it from, legally that is? Should I just visit Amazon and pick them up?

If GoG was able to put out Thief 1 and 2 I would be so happy just because Deus Ex would follow since Square Enix/Eidos holds the rights for them.

I generally agree with the other posters in this thread - Thief 3 is a good game with a few great levels and brilliant atmosphere, but I'd also call it the weakest game in the series (because the other games are just *so* good). As for first person vs third, I've always felt that 3rd person mode was almost cheating in that game, and I felt that it mostly ruined the tension (even if it does look really awesome at times). So I greatly prefer first-person mode - you can't see as much, but it is far more fun/intense.

I started the series with Metal Age, stopped 3/4 of the way thru and played the first game, then went back and finished Metal Age. Great games. I loved the third also. I think I'll reinstall it just for giggles.

Would also like to know if there are any good mods for any of the Thief games that keep gameplay either vanilla or fix problems with it, or update the graphics/textures.

I picked up thief for $7 at goodwill. If you are interested in mods, there is a mod called the minimalist project that makes the game more like the old thief games.

Also, I have played thief metal age and didn't like it. The AI is soooo dumb and hated the animations/graphics, that's not to say that the game wast bad, as it has quite good voice acting. Just couldn't get past all the bad graphics.
