Thinking of getting a new video card, but have one question

So my 8800gt is starting to show its age, its temps are getting pretty bad with newer games and I'm just looking for something with more power. The only question is, my entire computer is built with parts from mid '07. Thats including an AM2 mobo with an Athlon X2 6000+. I was considering getting a 5770 since they are pretty reasonably priced, but is that a good idea with my older parts. I don't relly have enough money right now to get a full new comp so I'm just looking for a quick fix. Should I go for it? Anyone have a better suggestion on what video card I should get? Thanks in advance for your help guys :D

I think you could upgrade your gpu and sleep fairly well at night, most games are far more gpu demanding then cpu demanding.

As for card, I would say you have your eye on a pretty good card ^^ especialy since its an 8800 you have (just gt?)

An alternative could be the Nvidia 460 which seems to be the only decent card of this generations lineups they have, it does however look like it is REALLY decent.

But since it just came out, you might feel more secure with the Ati card since it has been tested more.

Well, you could look for another 8800 and SLi/OC them. That would be a solid boost for probably less than $100.Or look at the new GTX 460, which looks very promising for $200. By any chance were you at Western University this past Saturday? My friend is in the high school DCI thing, and he went. Roggirek

You CPU atm should be fine. Get a gtx460 over a 5770 though. Iantheone

initially noa 465 = 460 directly but if you get a good 465 you can change it into a 470 and in asus's case its 100% safe

without spending 90 bucks more, the preformance gain is about 25% and in some cases you would even outpreform that gtx 470 hahahaha

I just went with a 4870, myself.... came out to be about 140 bucks with the mail in rebate and free shipping. Should be in today according to the tracker. I was thinking about the 5770, but I'm using WinXP, and really don't plan on upgrading Windows anytime soon. So, DX11 would be a useless feature for me (even DX10 is useless to me, for that matter). Plus the 4870 is slightly faster than the 5770, and it was slightly cheaper, too. It also seems that I tend to upgrade the video card every 2-4 years... So, I felt the 4870 would be good enough for that amount of a time span for the price and performance.

The slightly better framerates could change sides if ATI optimizes the drivers for the 5770, though (seems to be about a 5 frames difference).... and you may benefit from DX11 with your OS. So, it a bit of a coin flip, really... Especially, being that not many games make use of DX11.
