So my 8800gt is starting to show its age, its temps are getting pretty bad with newer games and I'm just looking for something with more power. The only question is, my entire computer is built with parts from mid '07. Thats including an AM2 mobo with an Athlon X2 6000+. I was considering getting a 5770 since they are pretty reasonably priced, but is that a good idea with my older parts. I don't relly have enough money right now to get a full new comp so I'm just looking for a quick fix. Should I go for it? Anyone have a better suggestion on what video card I should get? Thanks in advance for your help guys :D

I think you could upgrade your gpu and sleep fairly well at night, most games are far more gpu demanding then cpu demanding.

As for card, I would say you have your eye on a pretty good card ^^ especialy since its an 8800 you have (just gt?)

An alternative could be the Nvidia 460 which seems to be the only decent card of this generations lineups they have, it does however look like it is REALLY decent.

But since it just came out, you might feel more secure with the Ati card since it has been tested more.

I think it would be a perfect fit for your current rig. Once you decide to upgrade your other components, you can just slap in another 5770 for some serious performance increase (on par with a 5870 and beating it most of the time while being cheaper as well). They scale incredibly well in crossfire that's a fact. It's also a new generation of video cards so it supports all the new technologies as well (DX11, DC 11, Eyefinity, Ati-Stream etc.) Power consumption is also lower than your 8800 and a 5770 will run really cool (usually around 40 idle and 50-60 full load) and the fan is super quiet. It does make quite a lot of noise when you increase RPM though, but if you let the driver control it you won't notice it at all. Recommended =)

Well I only have $500 in my bank account atm so $200 is my limit. At BDK-Soft, sadly my mobo is sli only :( And yes it is DCI lol, which I march in and hence why my budget is so low

Edit: Yes cooling is very important, as my 8800gt gets up too 100c +

Well, you could look for another 8800 and SLi/OC them. That would be a solid boost for probably less than $100.Or look at the new GTX 460, which looks very promising for $200. By any chance were you at Western University this past Saturday? My friend is in the high school DCI thing, and he went.

No sadly I'm not marching this year due to my work schedule, anyways, I am kind of torn between the GTX460 and the 5770 :(

Is AM3 backwards compatible?

You will need a am3 or am2+ board, i believe. so yes, it should work on an am2+ mobo..but thats a decent quadcore that should help you out. or for $130 you can get a phenom II quadcore...

silicon's melting point is 1414 degrees centigrade, so it's extremely unlikely that it would melt at 85 degrees.

That's what I think I will be doing, not the question is whether or not I should get the 1gb version when my resolution is 1680x1050. I was looking at some benchmarks and even at my resolution there seemed to be a jump in performance

Hmm well I did just look at newegg and saw a GTX 465 for $250, is it that much better than the 460? Because that's pushing over what my initial budget was

initially noa 465 = 460 directly but if you get a good 465 you can change it into a 470 and in asus's case its 100% safe

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121383&Tpk=asus%20gtx%20465 this one here specifically can be unlocked legitimately

http://en.expreview.com/2010/07/11/guide-on-how-to-unlock-the-geforce-gtx-465/7865.html/3

with those two there

you get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121372&cm_re=gtx_470-_-14-121-372-_-Product

without spending 90 bucks more, the preformance gain is about 25% and in some cases you would even outpreform that gtx 470 hahahaha

I'd just stick with the 460, much less power/heat/noise, and it SLi's like a pro.

Yeah my final decision is the 1gb gtx 460, is it worth preordering from EVGA and paying $240? Or will it be cheaper on newegg tomorrow (which is when I heard they ship)

Not sure, the 1GB versions I saw on there were ~$230, but EVGA is usually a little more expensive, right? If possible, preorder one, and then cancel it if Newegg has a better deal.

I just went with a 4870, myself.... came out to be about 140 bucks with the mail in rebate and free shipping. Should be in today according to the tracker. I was thinking about the 5770, but I'm using WinXP, and really don't plan on upgrading Windows anytime soon. So, DX11 would be a useless feature for me (even DX10 is useless to me, for that matter). Plus the 4870 is slightly faster than the 5770, and it was slightly cheaper, too. It also seems that I tend to upgrade the video card every 2-4 years... So, I felt the 4870 would be good enough for that amount of a time span for the price and performance.

The slightly better framerates could change sides if ATI optimizes the drivers for the 5770, though (seems to be about a 5 frames difference).... and you may benefit from DX11 with your OS. So, it a bit of a coin flip, really... Especially, being that not many games make use of DX11.
